Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I second the Under Armour recommendation! I love the long sleeve Cold Gear shirts for layering. I want to try the Cold Gear tights as well. I usually wear a bazillion layers because I hate to be hot when riding but am freezing before and after. I recently bought some fleece lined tights to wear under breeches but I haven’t tried them yet. I have Ariat winter paddock boots and love them. I usually just do thick socks and my regular half chaps. I tried the Mountain Horse boots but they were too bulky for riding for me.
We get a lot of snow sliding off our indoor as well. Sigh. Not looking forward to that at all. So far the temps have been ok. 5-10 C during the day and just a few flurries.

I came in hear to ask about warm boots for riders who are wimpy about the cold (me!), and I see the MH Rimrocks are already recommended. So, if you are between sizes, did you go up or down to the nearest whole size? I was thinking up, to allow for a thicker sock, but let me know if that's not right! I am thinking these will go at the top of my christmas wish list

Winter riding gear can make it a little disorienting. I have really nice winter wear, but I have found myself in situations where I suddenly have a lot of horse under me an I'm either too layered or too frozen to react. "Why can I not stick in the saddle? Oh I am, but I can't feel it because my butt is numb".

It does affect your reflexes. And those balaclavas you wear under your helmet are great for keeping your face from freezing but they can also prevent your head from turning and it affects my balance to a degree.

Size up and then you can stick those warming packets in along with your thick socks. MH boots run a little large but not crazy large.

I pull my balaclava down over my neck and wear a thin fleece headband under my helmet. I can then pull the balaclava up over my nose if necessary. No issues with head turning or peripheral vision, and it's pretty warm. It took me a few tries to figure out something for riding out to cattle in the cold that would still allow me to, you know, see them.

Are they wide/thick/clunky enough that my regular stirrups won't fit?

@BITSA, @vanessajean LOVE the cold wear underarmor! So glad others agree!

To battle those afterwork sweats, I try to wear my coat just until i'm ready to trot and then whip it off with the horse's cooler. As soon as we are done working I throw the coat and horse cooler back on to retain the heat!

My hands are usually alright in my "summer gloves" while riding. Mittens required to brush the snow off the car and get the ponies from their paddocks!

As for footwear, I usually wear normal socks in my tallboots while riding, but my sorels are on just until I'm ready to ride and again, back on as soon as I'm done riding and the horse has its tack off. On super cold days or days when I have more than one to ride, I like the smart wool socks! They can be a bit thick in my boots but I prefer to keep all ten toes

I am also one of those lucky ones with an indoor arena, not many facilities around here don't have some sort of an indoor to ride in! Couldn't imagine only being able to ride outdoors through the whole winter! You guys certainly are committed!

Good question. When I had them (I've had both the Rimfrost tall boots and another model that was discontinued) I don't think I had any issues. Then again, I have wide feet and my stirrups are either size 4.75 or 5.

I wasn't a believer until I got a pair of Coldgear tights, which are awesomely warm and slide under breeches easily. The pair I'm currently wearing has got to be 5 years old and still going strong after lots and lots of use.

Is committed the polite way of saying we're crazy? Seriously, though, if I don't work my TB he finds ways to amuse himself. Tonight I hid behind the open door of my truck to put on my chaps out of the wind and he figured out that he can get my attention by pushing the door shut..........I don't want to know what he'd dream up with the winter off!

Well, I managed to get my tail out there yesterday and ride. By time I tacked up and went to ride, I had on an Underarmour layer, an acrylic sweater over that and a fleece vest. I had my winter fleecy underlayer breeches under my regular breeches and my Mountain Horse boots and wool socks. I'll have to admit I was plenty warm. It was somewhere in the 30ºs.

Between work and school I end up riding at 9:30-10 pm. I'm located in Mid-Michigan so we get pretty bad winters. I'm fortunate and have a massive indoor to work in (250x100) but it can be pretty frigid out when I ride that late! The owner started heating the bathroom so I'm a weirdo and hang out in the there to clean tack :P The grooming area and wash stall is much warmer than the rest of the barn as well but I'm not sure how the owner is heating it. It's pretty far away from my tack locker so I don't take much advantage of it and just stay in the main aisle.

I have my lesson tonight. It’s going be around 4 Celsius by the time I get there. I’m planning to wear my UA coldgear l/s, a yoga jacket, hoodie and vest. I will probably only wear the l/s shirt and vest to ride in. Planning to wear my regular TS breeches and see how cold I get. I haven’t broken out my winter paddock boots yet either but this might be the weekend to do it. We are getting 5-10 cm of snow tomorrow.

I think this year Ill definitely need some motivation. I'm usually pretty good, motivation wise, through the winter. I could get to the barn (30 minute drive) and ride before it got dark. Last year my horse was the most fit hes ever been and the fittest out of all the horses in the barn! The weather was cold but usually I'm ready for it due to a hot/humid summer here in VA....

This year however everything has changed....my drive is now and hour away, I not wait for it to be dark enough that the lights work. I hate that twilight time where lights (utility lights that are redneck mounted onto the side of steel beams) don't work but still darker than preferred. Luckily have a covered ring, but may does the wind blow when its windy. I'm not ready for the cold yet...

So yep I am thinking I may need some help with motivation this winter...

I like winter but am not a huge fan of riding. My horse turns into a fire breathing dragon and my motivations goes down from there. It hasn't been all that could here yet either.

What about winter gloves? My hands get so cold, but bulky gloves are really hard to ride in as well....haven't found a great set of winter gloves for riding yet. and for winter chores?

I am going to do my best to keep on riding this winter, despite my lack of an indoor and crappy footing. I rode yesterday despite the sub-freezing temps. My little TB is a total saint, despite being less than a year off the track and spending most of that going from one stupid pasture injury to another. My footing was still thawed so I took advantage to hop him over some little jumps -- not sure how many opportunities I will have to do that this year because today we have several inches of SNOW!!! BOO-HISS!!!!! But I just love this horse, he just canters around and boings over stuff like he has been doing it forever. He is sort of like a giant Welsh pony -- he has a very forward pace and jacks his knees up super high, but has a smooth jump. Oh, and he's 15.2 on a tall day. And has jumped like 6 times. I plan to have all sorts of fun with him in 2015!

here is a pic of him from a week or two ago enjoying the fall: https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.ph...type=3&theater

I wear fleece breeches and my full chaps, with a non-horsey LL Bean ski parka, and usually stay pretty warm other than my hands. I also put a thin fleece headband under my helmet over my ears, that helps.

I hope everyone is staying warm with this first big polar freeze! I broke out the heated water buckets two days ago and was SO glad this morning when the thermometer read 25 degrees! And we put in Nelson waterers in the fields a few weeks ago, which was a huge expense and hassle but no chipping frozen troughs this morning....loving that!

I looked on SmartPak, and there was a Q&A answered where a size 6 foot had a 15 1/4" calf at the widest point. I wear a size 7.5 and can measure them tonight if that helps? I will point out that they aren't as tall as an actual tall boot - you can't really tell that from looking at the pictures.

29*F and snowing enough that it appears to be twighlight out in the middle of the afternoon. I was actually cozy enough hacking today although the snowflakes in my eyelashes made things a little unpleasant. My horse thought there would be better ways to spend the afternoon....

fordtraktor: my SSG Work N Horse Lined Glove are real good for riding to about the low teens. Last year's single digits have sent me looking for something warmer for tacking up. Not good if your hands go numb before you get to the part where you tighten your girth. Once I'm mounted and get my heart rate up I'm OK, but I need some extreme gloves or ceramic liners to get through the grooming/tacking up process.
