Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Looking for TS-like breeches for schooling

I have the Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunter breeches for showing (and occasional schooling). I love them but am on the look out for slightly less expensive breeches with the same feel as the TS. I'm riding 5x a week and need something that will hold up the the use. Colors are totally fine as they will be strictly schooling breeches (but I'd love to stick with solid colors, no wacky patterns). I'd love to hear what you guys use and what breeches you like (or have used and don't like).

Also, has anyone had experience any of the Smartpak breeches? They look nice on the website, but I'd love to hear how people found them.

    Thanks!

I really like the Equine Couture breeches. They fit well, they look nice, they're comfortable.

I have found the Tredstep Symphony #3 Rosa Breech to be the closest to TS. I did not like the Equine Couture, they didn't fit me well at all.

I actually like the Tredsteps slightly more than the TS only because they have that sock bottom which is much more comfortable under boots than the Velcro.

I just started wearing knee patch SmartPak Piper breeches and I really like them. According to the reviews, they don't work well for EVERY body type, but they work for me. I find the material to be soft, slightly stretchy, washes well, VERY flattering with the cute rear pockets. Nice for 40 degree weather (haven't tried summer). I do HAVE to wear a belt with them, but I just started to wear a belt with my skinny jeans, so it's probably my shape right now (slowing losing extra weight) - but there's a lot of comments about wearing a belt with them. Mine are a 34, so I'm not tiny

The only thing I don't like is the front pockets are nice and deep, but vertically deep. My phone goes in lengthwise. But my other breeches (FITS Beka) are more horizontal and my phone fits sideways and I can totally ride with it in my front pocket because it sits under where I bend at the waist. Not the end of the world though

Thank you! How did you find the sizing? I was reading reviews and saw that some people found them to run a little big. Did you find that to be the case? Thanks!

To be honest, the newer TS trophy hunters are worth the extra money and hold up extremely well. I've had a few pairs for years that stand up to riding a few horses 5-6 days a week and still look new out of the wash. Haven't found another brand yet that comes close in quality or fit.

I completely agree with you. However I'm at the point where I have 1 workable pair of breeches (my TS) and I need 3-4 more pairs as I ride every day once I get back to school. My old pairs fell apart once I started riding every day and unfortunately I can't justify buying 4 pairs of Tailoreds, although I really want too. lol

I agree with this! That is why I made the switch to TS for schooling as well. Was spending a lot of money on "cheap" breeches that fell apart after less than a year of relatively gentle riding (3-5 days a week, maybe 1-2 horses each time). You can sometimes find some really good deals on ebay for the TS, although that still doesn't mean that they're "cheap" . Maybe in the $120-$140 range. Sometimes lower if you're lucky!

I am one who tried the Smartpak ones and the fit was just plain horrible on me. Made my butt look really long due to where the seam on the euroseat hit me (too low down) It was a shame because the colors are awesome and they are just super cute. A couple people at my barn have them and they have actually been holding up pretty well. The fabric is nice and thick and its a well constructred breech for the price.

Equine Couture for sure. My favorite breeches are my TS TH breeches, but I wanted to pick up some more schooling breeches and wasn't willing to spend that much for several pairs at one time either.

So I recently picked up a couple of pairs on the zulily.com sales and I think they're actually a little nicer than my TS Trophy Hunters. Sizing wise they run a tiny bit smaller (I wear a 28R in both brands, but my EC are a tiny bit snug while my TS are a tiny bit big), but they're really nice breeches. I think mine are the Sportif ones...I have navy and black and both have the white stitching. I will say that I also ordered a pair of the beige show-type ones and I wan't as impressed with those (I think the beige is kind of a weird too-close-to-flesh-color too).

I hate the Smartpak breeches. They don't fit my body type at all, which is a shame because they're super cute and fit one of my teeny tiny kid riders (20-something kid, not literal kid) beautifully.

You can look for good deals on EBay. I received a pair of Grand Prix breeches for Christmas and love them! They fit the same on me as my trophy hunters, though the material is a little thicker. Side zip, euro seat and velcro ankles.

I really like the Treadsteps! The most inexpensive version is great for schooling. I have a pair from each price point and I really love them...even better than Tailored Sportsman. I find they fit like Animo, a bit more snugly than TS of the same size.

The Trophy Hunters are the only TSs that fit me, I have some shape but not a ton so the midrise Trophy Hunters are ideal. I really really like my Ovations, although the fabric is definitely thicker so not as nice in the summer but they have been my go to breeches this winter. My Ovations are a size smaller than my TH but I'd probably go up a size when I buy a new pair as I think they run slightly curvier. They seem to wear like iron.

More similar but still a bit thicker are my RJ Classics - they were $60 at Equine Now so I caved and tried them, even though they only had the low rise left. I really like them and am planning on picking up a pair of midrise when I can. Not sure exactly how well they will wear but I'm very pleased with the fit.

My hugest pet peeve is the gaping waist so I'm worried about trying the Pipers but they're on my list just because they're so cute!

I have problems with waist gap, but Ovation's DX Euro seats work really well for me. The fabric's super durable and stain-resistant, too. They'll never replace Trophy Hunters for me, but they're a nice addition to the schooling wardrobe.

I, too, went searching for TS-like breeches to school in. What I found is that most of the options listed here (I have either tried on or purchased every pair mentioned on this thread), most only run $50-75 less than TS and they are not nearly as durable. My Ovations are the only things that came close durability-wise and they split in the crotch while I was having a lesson...unbeknownst to me! They were only 1.5 years old and I rode in them once or twice a week, depending on the laundry situation.

I would take whatever you were planning on spending and invest in as few as TS in the less dirt-showing colors - greys, greens, etc. They really seem to repel dirt and wear like iron - I can get two wears EASILY out of my non-tan pairs and I am a total dirt/sweat magnet.

YMMV but I spent way too much money chasing lesser quality imitations and should have just invested in a couple of pairs of TS.

I really like my Riding Sport Competitor II breeches- similar fabric to TS, and similar sort of fit on me. They ran a size small for me, but YMMV. But they are holding up well for me after six months, and I think they will last quite a bit longer. They are very flattering on me.

I love my TS and almost can't stand anything else, but I'm always trying to find something cheaper for schooling. I recently got a pair of Romfh International breeches and they fit and feel quite nice. They are a little thicker than TS, but I like them enough to get a couple more colors.

The ROMFH fit great and hold up beautifully. Just wash them on the cold, delicate cycle and hang to dry. Mine are at least two years old and still look show worthy.

I do love the TS's though especially since they are made in the US!

Horze Grand Prix breeches are remarkable! They fit true to size(and you can shrink them a little if you're short by washing in hot watter). I use mine for everyday wear and for shows as well and they still look brand new!

TS makes cotton schooling breeches that hold up quite well (I use them for showing too) and aren't as expensive.

Equine Couture has some nice breeches as well.
