I have just started showing my home bred TB in the Baby Green/Mod Adult division with the plan to move him up to the Pre-Green/Adult divisions next year. I hear all about the TB classes that are starting to be offered at more and more shows around the country. I would love to show my TB in them but can't due to the fact that he was not a race horse and was never bred to be one. Both his sire and dam were registered with the Jockey Club but being that he was bred to be a hunter it never crossed my mind to register him. Now that he is 7 it will cost over $2,000 to register him. That is not going to happen. Are there not other breeders out there that breed TB's for something other than the racetrack. Should they not be allowed to show off their babies to highlight the things these wonderful horses can do other than run fast? Just wondering if there are any other people out there who have run into this problem.

Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

Showing the non OTTB TB

As long as the horse has a racing tattoo its parentage can be determined, so tattooed horses should be okay in the TB classes.
As for not bothering to register a sport bred TB, that was the breeder's choice. S/he saved $250 and also cut out any options for WB inspection. Now that there are all TB shows and classes, the decision might be different."I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay."

His name's been changed so my bills of sale don't prove ownership to the JC, if I've read the rules correctly.Originally posted by vineyridge View PostAs long as the horse has a racing tattoo its parentage can be determined, so tattooed horses should be okay in the TB classes.

I am in the same boat, unfortunately. Thoroughbred, but never raced, so no tattoo - no papers either . . .http://fromdressagehorsetocowpony.blogspot.com/

I have two of these. My old girl is a 21yo Castle Magic TB but back then you were more likely to find non-TB classes than TB only classes. Who knew! Ha. My youngster doing the baby greens this year is a 6yo Castle Cove son. It would be nice if the JC could cut us a deal to register them late with DNA. You'd think they'd want us to help promote the breed. I'd love to do the TB classes but its not worth $2k or more. You don't scare me. I ride a MARE!

The Jockey Club now has a program to determine if a TB was ever registered with them. You send them $80, get a kit, and send a sample to them. They will cross reference the DNA to their DNA database. So unraced but registered TBs can be made eligible.
AFAIK, the tattoo is enough proof. You need bills of sale for papers that have been lost, but not to show in TB only classes. You just need proven registered parentage which the tattoo will do for you."I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay."

Too bad they won't do this for unregistered TBs for a limited time. I know the parentage of mine but he wasn't registered.Originally posted by vineyridge View PostThe Jockey Club now has a program to determine if a TB was ever registered with them. You can look up your horse's registered name with the tatoo, and verify parentage. BTW, it took me over 2 years but I managed to track down the papers of a mare I bought. Race horse people tend to be very helpful and tend to not throw away papers. I got name and number after name and number till I finally found the papers. Asked the guy to stick them in the mail to me and a few days later there they were. It took a little leg work and some perseverance, but might be worth a try.Originally posted by hunterrider23 View PostI have a similar problem. I'd love to show mine in the TBs, and he has a tattoo (though he was bred for jumping), but I don't have any papers because he's passed through god knows how many owners.

I am in a similar boat. Two registered JC parents, but horse is not registered. The show secretary of one of the local TB shows said that my bill of sale would be adequate proof. Said bill of sale states sire and dam and date/time of birth. The show secretary is also familiar with the breeder which may be helping here. YMMV.The Evil Chem Prof

I agree. If he was specifically bred with the regular hunter divisions in mind, then show him there.Originally posted by CBoylen View PostShow him in the pregreens as you originally intended. That is a bigger highlight. My CANTER cutie Chip and IHSA shows!

I have the same on my bill of sale but some divisions/shows require JC registration while others just require eligibility to be JC registered which I guess my bill of sale offers.Originally posted by Peggy View PostI am in a similar boat. I agree with others on just proceeding with the pre-greens. That's my plan. Just would have been fun to support the TB shows too by showing as they are my fav breed. I know I can support them in other ways. Just a little disappointing the JC won't help us out.You don't scare me. I ride a MARE!

The point of the TB shows is to show off "recycled" TBs so if the horse was bred for hunters then there is no reason it should be in the TB classes. Even if they were race trained. For instance my mare has a tattoo but never raced, I suspect due to injury. She can compete because she was originally intended for the track and had some training for a different discipline. No you do not need papers, just a tattoo to track down pedigree/racing name then get a TIP number. That is all they ask for is the TIP number OR if not tattooed then proof it was bred with the intention to race aka so it was essentially "recycled"."People who think their brains are not worth protecting are probably right!"

Thanks for all the replies. I fully intend to show him next year in the Pre-Greens and hopefully do the A/O's with him in the future. It would have just been fun to do some of the TB classes this year instead of the Modified Adults. I feel that the TB as a breed should be showcased not just the track rejects and being that the Jockey Club is the main registry for TB's you would think they would want to promote the breed too by offering a discounted registry for horses in this kind of situation. Sort of how USEF did the horse recording #'s awhile ago. I'm not trying to start any wars or anything about the OTTB vs. Non Race bred TB's. It's just that I have seen this large surge to promote the breed lately so why not promote all TB's and not just ones who have been ex race horses.

Use the tattoo research from the jockey club and get his registered name, then apply for the TIP number and you will be good to go.Originally posted by hunterrider23 View PostI have a similar problem. As for the OP...many of these TB only classes are geared toward OTTB's, I know the TB Celebration show is for TB's that were bred for racing, or their parents raced and (at least used to) specifically excludes TB's that are bred for sport.
I have an unraced mare that was tattoo'ed that I was able to get a TIP number for, and my trainer has an unraced mare (both parents raced) that she has the TIP number for as well and showed without any problems.
Some of these divisions are sponsored by the Jockey club, so they want to honor and support registered horses that were used for racing to "show off" how versatile they are (at least that's how I understand it).

Hunterrider23 - you should have no problem obtaining a TIP through the Jockey Club. I don't have the papers on mine, only the tattoo and I have no problem showing my horse. Names get changed for one reason or another. On the TIP page, they have a link where you can identify your horse. You can send in pictures which they can match up to his yearly shots along with the tattoo that you have on him. Shouldn't be a problem at all.Calm & Collected, 13, OTTB
