Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • New website: looking for the good, the bad and the ugly.

    Hey Guys,
I just posted our new website live yesterday (I have my flame suit on) and am looking for feedback.

As consumers, I'm interested to hear from you about what else you would like to see in a website offering horses for sale? Content, layout, videos, photos etc.

    Here it is: www.SakuraHillFarm.com

    Thanks in advance!

I think it looks great! Here are some really picky observations:

    Home:
The title page looks a bit confusing - there are tabs/links and photos everywhere. I'd streamline it just a bit more - maybe remove everything from the gray band (under the main photo) on down.

    The History Tab:
The background pattern is a bit distracting when trying to read the bios on owners/riders. Perhaps fade it out a bit more? I'd also consider 'sub-tabs' in this section. The long Bio on Monica would be easier to read in a more traditional paragraph format.

I found the website easy to navigate otherwise. Well done!

The rest of the website is really easy to navigate.

I think it looks nice and professional!

My only comment is where there is a significant amount a text, back the text with a more neutral background. It is possible to read everything over your background, but a little challenging and tiring (read: people aren't going to read it through).

Maybe a nice light rose color pulled out of your background? I'm not sure, just my $.02

Great minds think alike Burgie! You've pinpointed the areas that I too am still unhappy with. Thanks for the feedback and stay tuned for some improvements in those areas.

I know the last time you posted a new site I went into it pretty bad (I promise, it was for a good reason!). This is much better than last time, but I'm going through it looking at it in the eyes of a user experience designer.

It does look loads better than last time, but here are a some nitpicks:

          - Social media links up at the top look like an afterthought on top of that needless skinny black bar on top.

-Black Bar serves no purpose other than to push the actual content users want to look at down the page

-Logo doesn't look like its high quality enough, and the navigation bar just kind of looks plopped down on the page, not to mention the text on that is WAY too small. Think of the people looking at your page - Do all of them have perfect vision? Most likely not. You want to make sure text size is at *least* 12 px and yours looks to be 10 px. The smaller it is, the harder it will be to read.

-I see you also use pretty much the same type all over - Georgia is nice, but it's overkill and on the web serif typefaces are not preferable because they're much harder to read whole blocks of text (readability) and much harder to distinguish each character from the next, so it is less legible. Black on white is also very hard for people to read on the web. If you like the light text on dark bg look, go for a light grey on black. It will reflect less light back and puts less stress on the user's eye.

-I know the flowers are in the background, but they're oddly cut off and really only visible in two parts of the site on the front page - consider a better sakura flower background pattern or removing it entirely.

-I'm also confused as to why there's a black widow pattern on the slide. It makes the text on top look strange and distracting instead of flowing with the actual photography.

-Sales, Programs, News: Photos should be up closer to the titles, really the titles should be standing out much more than the rest of the content. Photos seems a little too large - consider resizing so smaller and easier for them to get to the "read more" button. Do not justify the text underneath. Everrrrrr. Look at the jankety spacing between words. The "rivers" get wider and wider and make those paragraphs harder to digest. They should be very short summaries, since the pages next to them should be going into more detail.

I did something similar on the site I recently designed for a Morgan Show Horse facility (Check it out here: http://bellaserastables.com/ ). The problem with designing is that you need to make sure the client also prepares the right content for the mock up and the right AMOUNT of content for your mock up. Didn't happen with this one and the client doesn't care so much, but I'm now making it mandatory that content is presented before I start designing so that we can slim and trim down to what is actually necessary and what is just fluff. It makes laying out the site much easier when you know what content you have. Why design a whole section if the client only has 2 sentences to put in here when it was meant for 2 paragraphs?Remember, people SCAN sites, not read, unless you're a news site!

-I would just take out the "add a comment' facebook sections.

-Now that i've been to the footer, take out the social media links at the top since you already have them down here. It's pretty universal to have them in the footer, you don't need them twice along with a facebook comment feed.

          Rest of the pages:
-Now that's ive seen the sakura background in full, it needs to either be more subtle or again, taken out completely. It makes the text very hard to read.
-About page "The owners": consider a text limit or a different way to present it, look how that skinny column extends the page down just for that info.
-About page isn't actually titled as "About Us" or "About SKH" but "A Dream Comes True.." This is very confusing to users as they might get confused as to what page they're on.
-Imagery on "For Sale" and "Sold" horses is a little juvenile. Might be better if they didn't have a white background - looks like it's just sitting on top of the page instead of working with it.
-News is really just a facebook feed. Why is this necessary? Just link to facebook. It doesn't look right.
-YR Corner - why not resize all logos so they flow together instead of just looking like they were placed on the page? About.com is listed twice.

-What the heck is going on on the Contact page? At first I saw a map, social media again (unnecessary), but then a pinterest type news/facebook feed just blew up on top of it, something that I can't close out. Right here for example: http://i.imgur.com/YjdHrtC.jpg

Overall, much better. It is pretty easy to use with some exceptions. It definitely looks better than some horse websites out there that people refuse to update, but could use some tweaking to be in top top shape.

I've not read the other poster's comments, so sorry if I'm repeating anything, but here are my (nitpicky!) observations.

            - "Home" page: I'm not a fan of background images on websites, with few exceptions. I think it distracts from the goal of the site, which is to draw attention to your information and 'products'. I really like the layout of the home page, but I'd try to move everything on the bottom up a bit. In particular the facebook comment bar. There is too much white space. I'm not a fan of these comment bars, either. I don't think they're used very frequently and they create clutter, IMHO.
            4. "About" page: I don't like having to scroll down so far. Is there another way you can arrange the information to avoid this? Perhaps embed the main image in with the text and then give all of the lower sections their own tabs (dropping down from the "about tab") IMHO, if I have to scroll so far down, the content deserves it's own subpage.
            5. "Sales" page: I like the layout. Be careful with the lines in the grey boxes. "Prospects" is crossed out. I like the subpages under each category. In this case, scrolling is appropriate.
            6. "Breeding" page: Same as sales page. Watch the lines, some of your text appears to be crossed out.
            7. "Programs" page: Same as above
            8. "News" page: Yay for social media! (I'm a social media director by trade.) I'd change the format of the feed to whatever you're using on the contact page (I'm going to guess inadvertently. ;P)
            9. "YR" page: nothing much to say
            10. "Contact" page: you have some social feeds overlapping your content on this page. Are you using wix to make this site by any chance? FWIW, I really like the presentation of the feed on this page. I'd get rid of what you have on the news page and use this format instead.

            Great job!

              - I personally do not care for the selected rotating pictures on the homepage. For a breeder of top horses I expect to see top horses on the homepage. I would rotate through 4-6 very high quality photos. Any non show pictures should show a horse groomed to perfection. No unpulled manes or fuzzy coats.

              - I would move that entire bottom bar off the homepage. It is redundant and many users will never scroll down and see it

              - About us page: I would put a semi transparent white box behind all of the text to improve readability. Each person should have a title below their name "Barn Owner" or "Head Trainer"

              - I would create a drop down tab for the "team." If you have a great team of professionals behind you then brag about it! Have a brief paragraph for each professional in the team to help potential clients understand the caliber of care the horses receive

              - sales page: Is there a reason you don't include information the mares? Even if it is just a link to another page a potential client will want to read about the mare. She is more than half of the equation so explain her virtues.

              - Performance horses: are these horses for sale or the current and upcoming performance horses for the program?

              - breeding philosophy: I'd like to see the names for all of these historic horses under each picture so that I could have the option of doing additional research

              - Mare page: I love conformity. Personally I think the page would look better if every mare's top picture was a professional conformation side shot with performance and candids on their individual page

              - Working student program: the way I read it you offer free housing, free board for one horse, daily lessons, and time to ride personal horse every day. In exchange the student rides, cleans, mucks stalls, feed, etc. If I was interested I would like to know more details about the type of lesson (informal while someone else is also schooling or structured on my personal horse), pictures of where I would be living, etc. Also, the application did not work for me.

              - About.com shows up twice on the YR corner

              - Contact page is totally wonky

              - New Page. I am interested in news about foals, showing, etc. so I wouldn't want to scroll through an embedded FB page to look for key information. Look into creating an attractive link for facebook and using this page to highlight key information a potential client would be interested in.

Overall it really does look very nice. I think that once you have things ironed out it will be a very professional and impressive website. Opening yourself to criticism takes tough skin and I really admire that. I hope that none of my comments come across as rude. I think you are on the verge of having something really great but there are some areas that still need some work.

I think it looks great a lot of horse people tend to not update pay attention to their websites so you are already ahead of the fleet. I also particularly liked the young rider section as I am a young rider and my life seems to consist of so and so wants you in Florida for a WS job while i'm trying to ride and show and juggle school.

Your website is much nicer than a lot of websites out there. My biggest pet peeve is when websites are months (sometimes years) out of date.

I think some good advice has been shared here but the one thing I was not a fan of was the rotating photos on the home page. I liked the photos but they changed just a little too quick. I would slow it down just a smidge and take the hourglass looking image off the picture.

Nice website! I'll be a little nitpicky though - but seriously, good website. Better than most farms.

                      Home page
Don't like the Facebook comment plugin - distracting, and more suited for a news article or something that that IMO
Love the slideshow, but would it be possible to add a picture or two of horses you've bred being successful in their careers? ie fancy hunter/jumper show pics
The 'view our horses' link does not click through to anything, at least for me

                      About
Nice presentation, but Monica's bio is quite long. I'd either shorten it or try to make it a little more streamlined, personally I'd see that big block of text and skim through it
Background is a little distracting. What about doing white in the center where the text is, and the lovely floral pattern in the margins/sides?

                      The Farm page
I'd make the first sentence (Located on 15 acres..) as big as the bullet point text, and maybe bold
Can you make the Show More on the photos a darker color, maybe black? It blends in a lot

                      Sales page
Custom foal options is good. Nice presentation of mares
A few typos in the in-utero page: first option description should be on-the line, not capitalized, and on the Olympic Ahorn x Ana Bella cross foals should not be plural.
Prospects and Performance pages both look nice. You should use the first pic in your slideshow!

                      Breeding
Philosophy page is a little wordy, but broken up well into manageable chunks
Broodmare page is nice. Ahme P pic has a DSC image title when you mouse over it. Only clicked on a few individual profiles but they looked very good.
Foal crop page is basically the same as Prospects page: same photos and presentation. Could you eliminate one of them?

All Programs pages look good. On the YR development page there is a typo ("compete in Inercollegiate Riding")

Not sure if I like News just showing the Facebook feed. With the way the News link in the lower left corner of all pages was worded, I was expecting something more like this - http://www.ironspringfarm.com/news/headlines/ Could you make some little mini blurb posts from the last 4-6 months? If not then I'd just eliminate this page, you have 2 FB links already on the site.

YR Corner doesn't need 2 About links

                      Contact page looks good.

Overall very very good. And you have some lovely horses!

Just a few things I noticed that may have already been said:

-The non-moving background picture is VERY distracting. If the picture scrolled with the website it would be less so. I believe the specific type of slower featured is tied in to your brand (as in what part of the Sakura Hill identity, am I correct?) In that case I might make the background a solid color and try to work the flowers in to the top or sides of the webpage.
-I would get rid of the pictures of bridles and barns in to the cover page slideshow. It should solely be of horses, with perhaps the "Sakura Hill" halter picture and maybe the picture of the ribbon with the brand on it. I would also try to add pictures of your horses going under saddle or over fences if possible.
-The link to the working student application doesn't work either.

I love your website though, it is very well done and very professional. I'm not sure why but it seems like the horse industry is one of the slowest ones to catch on to the website trend - some very very nice barns do not reflect their quality in their website. Yours does!

The site is really slow to load for me... to the point that I almost gave up on it. It was nearly a minute before I as a new user had enough parts that I knew it was loading. (Because you load the site all the time, it seems fast to you. Try opening it in a brand new browser that hasn't loaded it before.) And even once content started coming in, it took some time before it stopped being jerky and uncomfortable for me as I viewed it.

I would drop the home page slideshow myself. Pick one or two pictures that look incredible and just have it be solid with those. The walking mare and/or the foal picture are the ones that get my attention of the ones you have. The others are beautiful but don't sell your barn or your services.

An inner gallery page with a slideshow might be terrific - a great way to show off your amazing images without them interfering with the message you need to draw people in.

I would agree that the background image is significantly interfering with text readability.

The thing that jumped right out at me is that the resolution of the photos on the homepage might be very large, please check it. I have an extremely fast internet connection and it still took a few seconds to load each photo. While they were loading a grey screen appeared. If I were a potential buyer, you would have already lost my interest.

On a positive note, thank you for putting your location and contact info very clearly on the front page. It drives me NUTS when I have to search for that info.

So - must have an older version of S/W but didn't see any pictures. Instead dotted circles swirling around.

I looked at sales pages and saw a few issues:
1.) What is percentage in pedigree? (not explained). Maybe a link to explain what it is.
2.) No height/expected height, color - even for babies, as long as they're no in-utereo you should know color
3.) Found a problem (Rita's sales page). Crown Affarir - words in description don't match pedigree (sire/dam).
                              Now in Kentucky
