Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Danforth Fine Used Saddles?

Has anyone dealt with them before?

I had someone contact me about my Tad Coffin that I have for sale wanting to buy it (I have my new saddle coming in 2 weeks and REALLY need the $$$). She wanted to send a certified check (alarm bells). I talked with her on the phone and there was no Nigerian accent so I said go for it. Get the check...its a Cashiers check but unsigned. I take to Bank of America and they won't honor without a signature. Talk with her, agree to send it back priority mail, she will get it signed and send back and priority.

Meanwhile I had googled her email and linked her to the owner of Darnforth Used Saddles (which made all sorts of sense). And my saddle is listed as coming soon.

Check was delivered last Thursday. I waited until Friday and emailed asking if she got it and to send me to tracking when it goes out. Nothing. Email again Monday...nothing (she knows I'm on the time crunch). Happen to go to her website and notice the coming soon is gone. I email saying do you still want it? If I still have no response I'm assuming its a no. She emails back (replying to my original email from Friday) saying the check would go out tomorrow (wends). I've now sent multiple emails asking if the check went out without any response at all.

At this point I'm giving up and just sending it to MD tack exchange if their offer is still open (had told her never mind because of this offer).

Is this typical? or did I just end up with the flakiest person out there? I would have assumed someone in the business of selling saddles would be a bit more responsible? Emails have gone unanswered and her voicemail is full? Hopefully MD tack Exchange is still willing or I am really stuck.

If I had a high end saddle that I wanted to consign I'd send it to Patricia at fineusedsaddles.com. I've had dealings with her as both buyer and seller and both transactions went very smoothly. I don't know anything about Danforth Used Saddles but that behavior does not indicate the level of professionalism you expect from someone dealing in expensive saddles.

PSA to anyone considering working with Danforth: Do. Not. Do. It. I just went through hell and back with that "company" as a purchaser. It took me almost 2 months to receive my items, and the seller absolutely stopped answering my phone calls. Her mailbox was always full and not accepting messages, and the only time I could get her to respond was when I sent her a Facebook message threatening to report her. It seems to me that she runs a very childish operation and lacks a serious amount of professionalism. FWIW, the items finally did arrive, and I'm mostly satisfied with them, but in retrospect, I REALLY wish I had taken my money elsewhere and avoided the headache.

Huh. I did make an inquiry once and never got a response. Guess I dodged a bullet.

This was my experience with Danforth. I sold a saddle to them and later bought a great tad coffin. Both transactions went perfectly and I couldn't be happier. I intend on looking there again when I need another saddle.

I had a fantastic experience when I bought my CWD from Danforth about a month and a half ago. She was very professional and quick to respond. However, she was supposed to send me a pair of calfskin leathers over a month ago. She already has my money, and I was told that I would have a tracking number in my inbox the same day I spoke with her. Never got one, and still have not received the leathers. After multiple unanswered phone calls and text messages and emails, she has still not responded. I'm losing my patience, and am very relieved that I got my saddle without an issue.

i had trouble with this vendor last fall, took far too long to receive a credit for a saddle i sent back after an unsuccessful trial...after many attempts to get in touch with her, she finally did credit me the funds after several weeks if I recollect, but it was not a great experience. She does have nice stuff and I'd certainly not rule her out, but I did have some trouble for sure.

Well she finally emailed me back. *send it to Nicole, thanks" (I had said if I didn't hear from her vu yesterday I would be contacting Nicole with MD tack exchange). Which I did and she is fabulous and not omly is honoring our original price but also mailing the check out now instead of waiting for the saddle since she knows I'm on a time crunch.

But...no apology, no explanation, nothing. So now I'm out both my postage to send that check back priority and 2 1/2 weeks of waiting. She had said I could just forge the tellers signature which of course I said no too...makes me wonder if I had, whether I would be contacted for fraud.

This whole experience has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth....

I contacted this seller a few months ago about a saddle she had for sale. I'm glad she never did get back to me.

I have had no dealings other than to look at their website yesterday (I'm looking for a used Tad Coffin) and think that the prices were WAY over what they should be. I wouldn't even consider a saddle from them for that reason.

Based on the majority of the response here, I'm glad there wasn't a saddle I wanted.

I have never dealt with this outfit.

But I have had a lot of business experience.

These are signs of a person who is in financial trouble.

Don't take calls, don't keep up with the voice mail, emails, etc., because they are dodging creditors and other problems.

Well I will let you guys know how my interactions with Danforth turn out now that this thread has me a tad spooked!
I want a 17.5 and she has a really nice looking SE02 on her site that is full calf. She has it advertised as a 17.5 but it is clearly stamped 17. She said it measured at 17.5 so I said ok I will try it since all the other measurements such as flap and panel would work. Se was great to work with so far! Sent me that saddle but also "on good faith" sent me a GORGEOUS Beval that is on her site too, almost brand new, soft as butta, be-U-T-full!! She only charged my credit card for the CWD and not the second saddle.
They arrived and I was so sad that the CWD did indeed turn out to be a true 17 and was too small. The Butet which has a flatter seat was too big. I shipped them both back. She provided the shipping label for me and I see she has already charged my CC again for 100$ which I am thinking is the return shipping fee?
Anyway I will let you know how fast she credits my CC! I hope I do not have to hound her for it! But believe me you I will update all of you with a yes or no weather I will consider working with her in the future! So far ok but you have me spooked now like I said! She has my money and now she has the saddle(s) too....
I do feel like she will follow through. Up to now she has been great to work with and she also has been very responsive to me!

OP if it was that Tad Coffin she had up shortly then disappeared a few nights ago, that is my dream saddle and wish I had the $$$ for it right now! Sucks that she's turned out to be shady. I might go unlike her page on facebook just so I don't get drawn in by something in the future.

I am dealing with her right now (and before this thread stared) and she has been nothing but professional. Extremely responsive as well.

My good friend just sold her daughters CWD through her and had a great experience. Responsive and check cleared w/o ossue.

Seems like there is a great deal of "piling on" without cause.

I don't think it's "piling on" at all. This actually happened to me.. the OP asked for first hand experiences. I told her mine which was not a particularly happy one. doesn't mean she is a crook, but if people have negative experiences, are they "not allowed" to post here because it will look like "piling on'?? very odd comment from you.

now if there are tons of people out there who had great experiences, then they should "pile on" too and we'll see both the good AND the bad.

Now I had to go and find my glasses to respond . My "great deal" is not a blanket statement and certainly if you have had personal dealings that were not good, your comments are very relevant. However there are a few posts from people who have had no dealings and they are calling into question her financial stability, that she is shady. That struck me as unfair.

I had looked into buying a saddle from her and communication was not great. This was in January. From what I've seen, her prices seem a bit higher than other retailers.
