Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Id just like to know which of the above things happened in order for them to determine the replacement amount of the breeches...

Did they give her full retail price towards the store credit, access my account to see how much I paid and give her that amount for store credit, or, did she tell them she paid $25 each ($50 total) and they give her that amount in store credit and she paid the difference herself for the TS and boots?

I know there is really nothing special in "my account"...not like its a bank account for goodness sake, and I am sure they look at them every day to track trends, etc and she probably knows everything I buy from them anyway...but you would have thought they wouldnt/couldnt do that for things like this...it just seems, like I said, sneaky...

But, if they just gave them to her for the full retail price thats a min of $30 "extra" she got that I didnt pay because of discounts...and I have no idea what they were on sale, but it was less than they are listed now.

Or, did she say they were a gift and they give her full retail price for both of them?

Again, like I said, just seems sneaky...I think I am still in shock...

It's not YOUR account, it's THEIR account with your details in it, I'm pretty sure. That's how people get away with selling email addresses and what not....you submitted the info, it's their info. (Obviously varies from place to place, depends on the company and the fine print.)

Dover did the exact same thing for me once. Had received a pair of boots as a gift and wanted to swap them out. I said "Hey, so and so got them for me.." and they said "Great! Let me pull up the account and see what we owe you."

So it depends, I think, on what the OP said to them, and how she phrased her relationship to you/the breeches.

I think it's a low down, sneaky, no-good thing to do and morally questionable, myself, returning those breeches and expecting Smartpak to eat the cost of them. For shame.

I know...its their account, and like I said, its not like its my bank account, etc...and I really shouldnt even be getting upset at Smartpak...I am just trying to rationalize HOW this went down and HOW they determined the store credit amount...its not like she said she exchanged them for a bag of horse treats or hoof oil...she picked two decent priced items, which leads me to believe she got full retail price for them, which I didnt even pay back in April.

My guess is she said they were a gift and she had ridden in them a few times, hence the stains on the biege ones...maybe a gift from a student or a few students and she "didnt know" who had ordered them...so they just didnt have "all" of the correct info to go by...maybe thats how this worked out in her favor.

Even if they did check my account to see what I had paid, she still got a damn good deal in store credit.

        Shocked.

I still can't understand what would even possess someone to call on something they bought NEW that no longer fit (or fit poorly when they bought it and they decided to use it multiple times anyway). I know you're happy with your swap, and we ALL agree you got a steal of a deal, but why should SmartPak have given you anything?! As others have brought up, the abuse of liberal return policies is what makes liberal return policies go extinct.

Example: I have some TS Trophies I bought there this summer. They fit decently, but not amazingly. I bought them, showed and rode in them, and have since lost 5 pounds so the fit has gone downhill considerably and I should have bought down a size instead of buying up a size. Is this SmartPak's fault? Should we all get our money back for weight fluctuations and changes of heart?

OP, I'm glad you are happy with their service and giving them some good PR for it, but there is a reason everyone has turned this into a "witch hunt" - you really took advantage of them.

That's so weird....so she bought them off a "friend", somehow convinced smartpak they were a gift and managed to get store credit for them? And smartpak took them despite that one of the breeches had stains?! Wow, still wrapping my head around this one too. Sorry you got (even if possibly inadvertently on the part of the OP) screwed over, TXJumpr. That sucks!

Of course since you called and asked they had to appease you.

Otherwise, you could have ended up on here talking smack about SP because they didn't fulfill their "will ALWAYS accept returns" policy. And they dont want that.

You took advantage of them, plain and simple. That's all.

And yes, SP is awesome. And I'm sure once you hung up, the sales girl turned to her neighbor and said you're not going to BELIEVE what this chic just asked if I could do.

I don't think people are too concerned about what SmartPak lost as a corporation, but rather feel for your poor friend TxJumper that got played a bit. I mean, she sold them to you, so they were yours to do what you wanted with them. But buying them from your friend for probably suuper cheap (I mean, she already got them on sale and probably sold them to you for less than that) and then returning them to SP for full retail price credit and getting TS breeches out of the deal just doesn't sit well with me, friend wise. I wouldn't do it to a friend.

No, you should have tried then on when I brought them to you, like I offered. Then if they didn't fit no big deal...it's not like it was some random eBay sale.

I think smartpak got screwed here, not me. I just think you should have mentioned what you had done to ME before posting it on a public forum. I would rather sell stuff cheap that I don't use than have it sit here gathering dust...don't see anything wrong with that all.

Like I said, it's not like you bought a $500 car and slapped a new paint job on it and sold it for $750...it's like you bought that car than took it back to the manufacture and got a full credit as if it were new toward a new car simply because you did t test drive it when you bought it.

He'll, the lady I sold my horse trailer too resold it ladt month and made $1k off it...good for her...but she didn't call featherlite and try to exchange it because it wasn't big enough and end up with a living quarters for $5k. See my point??

You know what, it doesn't matter. This has become less about what you did and more about what I did to you...which doesn't make any sense to me.

You started this thread and did not get the response you were hoping for, so now I am the villain who started a witch hunt, fine.

If you are fine with what you did and see nothing wrong...even with me out of it altogether, fine.

For me it's a more a moral issue and less a friend issue.

I did nothing to you, you shot your own foot here, no one else.

Whether the OP Fully disclosed the information or not, Smartpak is choosing to be a company that stands by their products. Anyone do business with LL Bean? They do the same. Lifetime satisfaction guarantee on everything.

I see many parallels in the way Smartpak does business, which is why I choose to do business with them. Does it mean that OP's situation is ethical? Maybe not. But, to me, it really comes down to customer satisfaction, and smartpak delivers. Every time.
