Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Any else notice the pictures from Capital Challenge on the training page of the website?

I am sure those photographers would love to know someone is using their pictures.

Here's the skinny on Christopher Vancaren....

Several years ago he started a business (he claims to have taken it over from the deceased owner) called Buckingham Investments and Buckingham Equestrian Estates. The website is here. He later used two other names for his business (Vancaren Worldwide Showjumping Inc. and Vancaren Equestrian Partners of Beverly Hills) both of which had the SAME mailing address of 8383 Wilshire Blvd. in LA which happens to be an office building occupied by tenants ranging from doctors to online dating services to sleazy talent agencies. The website registration information for his FL business has the same contact information as his last two businesses in CA with a Verizon Wireless number registered in Beverly Hills. He is not an active member of the USEF, though he has two memberships in his name, and none of the equestrians listed on his staff page for Buckingham Investments are legit as far as I can tell. I dug up his Yahoo reviews for his new business (Vancaren Equestrian Equestrian LLC and yes it is EXACTLY THAT) and all three of them are fake, done by random names, and one of them is actually a review for Green Meadow Farms which is listed at the same address Vancaren gives for his latest FL venture. There are also absolutely NO verifiable accounts of him ever having trained anyone anywhere or competing in any USEF recognized event and the one picture that exists of him is inconclusive as to who is in it though I do know exactly where it was taken in LA. So do the math kiddies.
Thus do we growl that our big toes have, at this moment, been thrown up from below!

I would like to put it out there that i am very sorry if Buckingham Investments put a bad taste in people's mouth! I will have most you know that when i stated Buckingham i was 16 and trying to be this big shot in the industry now that im 24 8 YEARS later i see that the people who where behind me helping me with Buckingham did not care that i was makeing a bad name for myself. Now that things are going well for me i have so many strikes that people are not seeing the set up i have now just the past when i was 16 i would really like to show people that Christopher Vancaren is a great guy and not this mess up that the the equestrian world is still thinking of if all of you would take the chance to get to know me see my Training program you would be very proud and would feel a much better vibe from Vancaren Crop and Vancaren Equestrian Partners LLC. I would like that chance and to me the Grand Prix field is the chance to show people Vancaren is a strong name in the Equestrian Field. One by one ill show the world 2009 im coming back with a bang see you at the shows and yes please say hi!

Im sure you do "know" how we all "Hate" to see a young african-american training hunter/jumpers.....i think you know not! If anything- we hate lying con-artists who come into this industry looking to make a few bucks by scamming people and taking their money. If you really have the reputation that everyone on here can relate to----something has obviously been done...by you....to create such a reputation for yourself. I was just viewing your website. as far as i can tell, one photo is legit...possibly. The rest where stolen from Benny de Ruiter's web site, the others you cant even tell they are you, and i doubt that they are just by looking at them.

While there are few african-americans who can be seen on the hunter/jumper circuit compared to the white americans- you have no right whatsoever, to come here pulling the race-card. In fact, i find it insulting. I find your reply's and your tone immature. I find the fact that you have stolen information off of other peoples websites uncalled for. I doubt Benny has done business with you to the point where he would allow you to take photos from his website and post them as you own on your website with out citing the source.

From what i gather on my own observance I am appaled. You have no right to come here claiming we hate african-americans or that we are wrong- after you just admitted what you've done- when we have all sat here and browsed our sources (THE INTERNET IS A BEAUTIFUL THING) and have confirmed everything about you....

24 years old with 12 years of professional experience on the GP level stinks more then any race claim.

Fact, how the heck did CV ever even get race into a discussion revolving around misleading photos and a supposed career that nobody is aware of? Changing the subject?

And, CV, try to make your posts look less like some kid texting instead of listening in class. Even legit GP and Olympic level riders who occaisionally post on here have the grammer and punctuation thing figured out.

                      Carry on.

Why am I more coherent than a 24 year old?

On a side note, you have already established yourself as a con artist/manipulator as was stated in your latest post
"i see that the people who where behind me helping me with Buckingham did not care that i was makeing a bad name for myself. Now that things are going well for me i have so many strikes that people are not seeing the set up i have now just the past when i was 16"
(took me a while to get through all the missed puntuation)
I believe that this phrase was most recently heard during the race for presidency: "you can put lipstick on a pig". Once a bad name, always a bad name. And if you're going to make efforts to clear your name answer why you have pictures that obviously you did not have permission to use? Simple question really.

Ps. Nothing eggs me more than improper grammar. Please make an effort to refrain from run on sentences at the very least. Proof reading is also a nice concept.

I met Christopher Vancaren in mid July. My business is located in the LA area. He came to me wanting to purchase two horses, one GP horse and something to leg himself up on. He claimed that he ran a huge business in the Simi Valley area and that he had lots of people working for him. And that the reason he was with me was that he did not want to look like a fool in front of his customers. In the interm while i was looking for those two horses i had him riding one of my begginer lesson horses. He could barely ride, he claimed that he had taken a bad fall and that he was just coming back from it.
About two weeks later after calling around i found a couple of nice horses in Hap Hansens barn to look at. Christopher and i went down to look at them, and one of them we liked. So i left it with Hap that we would schedule a pre pruchase within the next couple of days with one of the local vets. The next day after looking at the horse that we liked i had a vet lined up to examine the horse, so i called Christopher to get his authorization to do it. He never called me back. Within hours of my last message to Christopher the cell phone number that he gave me was turned off. I have not seen or spoken with him since.
Some where in th middle of all of this Christopher had contacted one of the blacksmiths at the barn about shoeing all of his horses in Simi Valley. They set a date and time to meet at his barn in Simi Valley. The blacksmith arrived at the appointed date and time to be informed that Christopher had never ever boared or trained there. The blacksmith promptly called me to inform me of the news and said call the Beverly Hill Police Dep. [edit]
The one thing i don't understand is what does he gain from this? He did not get a fancy horse. He got a handfull of riding lesson on a lesson horse and a half a day of horse shopping. What did he gain besides attention? Nothing. If anyone see's, hears or comes into contact with Christopher Vancaren i would urge you to call the Beverly Hills Police Dept.

I find this very interesting. I have actually seen CV ride at the summer High Prairie Farms (Colorado Horse Park) shows, probably about 4-5 years ago? It may have been 3 years ago, but definitely not in the last couple years. I remember it not because of his race but because he was in the smaller jumper ring, giving a horse an EXTREMELY BAD ride, and blaming the horse for stopping, swearing at it (loudly and repeatedly), and generally getting after the horse way more than was appropriate since everyone could see that the poor horse was just responding to the BAD RIDE. This was probably for a Level 2 or 3 jumper class. I asked my trainer who the guy was, and they said "That's Chris, he's from LA. Try to stay away from him in the warmup ring so you don't get hurt."

Also, I'm very surprised to hear that he says he's only 24, since he looked to be in his late 20's at the time. But I never got a very close look at him.

ETA: I have emailed Benny to inform him that pics of his horses are being used on another site (and sent the link to the sales page.)
"Ponies are a socially acceptable form of child abuse." - said by a friend when asked if she was going to find a pony for her 5 year old daughter.

Somehow, I just don't feel bad reading about other people's experiences with the antics of con artists/scammers who refuse to explain the obvious cons/scams they are pulling in their posts, in spite of being publicly called out on them?

But then again, maybe I'm just heartless?
