Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Low Key Schooling Shows near W. Loudoun, VA

Hey all! I'm visiting from eventing land.

I just took my young horse to her first jumping lesson and she was great; easily over a little 2'6" course by the end. I'd previously popped over crossrails in March, hunter paced twice in April, and jumped little walls, banks, etc. on trails, so she wasn't new to fences. My trainer recommends I move to 2'9" at home and enter a couple 2'6" hunter classes. Unlike her half sister, she has a naturally slow, round jump. *I* tend to want to jump fast and w/ long spots, so he'd like me to focus on developing a steady rhythm and look for closer spots. Plus, she needs practice going places.

It has been 20 (+?!) years since I've done hunters! Does anyone have a recommendation on shows w/in easy trailering distance from Purcellville? I'll be doing this in modified eventing tack (think: black saddle... can probably dig out a dark brown bridle).

Do I have to braid? When I was a kid, I used to braid for show money. Now that I only do it for myself, I minimize how many I put in (and usually forgo at low levels anyway). Is a black hunt jacket still appropriate, if not entirely stylish? And are 2'9" divisions uncommon? I'd like the option of a move up later in the season.

    Thanks in advance.

On vhsa.com look at the "Associate" shows--those are unrated, don't have to braid.

I do more jumpers than huntes but like Sandstone in Berryville a lot

For hunters there are mostly 2'6 and 3', I believe there is not usually a 2'9 division.

Frying Pan Park, there's a few at Turner Farm this summer, Red Gate Farm, Elmington Farm, and as Beam Me Up said, check the VHSA Associate show pages! They're all great, some require show clothes and some don't, but no braiding and they're all pretty low key! Usually 2',2'6", and 3' are the jumping choices, some shows may have 2'9" - check the show programs. Maybe I'll see you around, I'll probably be running the in-gate at the Turner Farm shows this summer!

There's one coming up on Middleburg at Sunny's Corner on May 26th and bonus... the adults/horses go early, unlike alot of the other shows which have ponies first. Depending on where in Purcellville you are, that might be your closest option. I would not personally recommend Red Gate because the ring is pretty small, and I think it's better suited for ponies.

oh and no, braiding is not necessary at all.

you can check out the prize list at www.unitedshowseries.com

Sandstone, Summerplace or Fox Chase are both easy hauls from Purcellville and there are a bunch of others. You can check the VHSA associate calendar. Some are more casual than others.

Black jacket is fine, braiding is not necessary - just make sure the mane is pulled. I wouldn't worry too much about moderated eventing tack as long as you're not using something that is totally not done (i.e., a flash noseband) or totally illegal (boots). If you still have the Bates saddle from a while ago, that would work.

Pack a tailgate and have fun!

Could also try River Chase Farm which has a show coming up I think - and if you want to hop across the river I'd suggest the Lytle Show series, would be a great place to school your horse. Their place is not far from Point of Rocks. just off Rt 28 in MD. If you've ever been to LochMoy/Maryland Horse Trials they are close to there. They have a show series with several dates spring & summer. Good quality jumps too as father Bert makes jumps for WIHS and I think made some for WEG... check out their website for dates/Prize list at lytleshowhorses.com.

Next weeknd there is "TWA Short Circuit Show @ Warrenton Show Grounds" on Sunday. If you have been eventing around here, you probably already know Gegi Winslett

The following weekend has Fox Chase in Middleburg, Moriah in Warrenton, Elmington in Berryville, and River Chasse in ALdie.

Memorial Day weekend has Sandstone in Millwwod, Sunny's Corner in Middleburg, Short Circuit in Warrenton,

On the 31st is a Summerplace evening show in The Plains.

And that is just a small subset.

Thanks, all! This is exactly the type of info I was looking for! Hooray no braiding! Looks like VHSA has quite the extensive local circuit in this area.

I didn't realize that Turner hosted shows! I wonder if their XC course is open for schooling on show days. I've taken my other horse schooling there and it's a super facility for a greenie. If I could take River in a few classes and also get some XC schooling in, that would be a fantastic outing! She's an agreeable horse but doesn't quite have the built in confidence level of her half sister so I will need to expose her to more types of jumps, I think.

Hey Trixie! Hope you found that saddle that worked! The Bates is gone, replaced w/ a Black Country Quantum, that gives me a bit more room to jump 3'6"+ at speed on my other horse. But other than being black leather, it's a pretty normal looking jumping saddle. I even have a fitted pad for it that I use for hunter paces. I haven't bought River her own saddle yet since the Quantum fits her tolerably well and her shape has been changing rapidly. I ride her in a regular noseband and occasionally in a standing martingale, although I'm weaning her off that. Her favorite evasion was to throw her head in the air but that's starting to fade out.

I wound up sucking it up and buying the Frank Baines that was so beautiful. More than I wanted to spend, definitely, but it works SO nicely on him. Thank you again for being so kind as to lend us the Bates to try!

If you want to get XC schooling in also you can do one of the local series at Frying Pan also. I'm not sure what they're running this year but it should be on their website. We used to do that with Wings - spin him around the XC course, get him happy and relaxed and then take him in the show ring. He seems to think of FPP as horse disney, except for those rotten farm animals like cows.

I'm pretty sure it's allowed! I haven't attended any since I'm away at school but I know the kids who show there have said they got to school over all the "big scary XC jumps"... so you should be good! There's one June 3rd... the Saddlery in GF's website should have the prize list up!

Hunt Club Farm in Berryville also has nice low key show. Big ring, nice footing, and jumps. They have a show each month.
