Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I owned a Weatherbeeta Taka back in 2001 shortly after they came out with that line. It held up well for the two winters I used it.

I bought a Weatherbeeta orican freestyle mid weight high neck blanket a couple weeks ago and so far so good. I haven't had it long enough to really tell anything.

I'm wondering, does anyone have a blanket suggestions for something with a built-in neck in a heavy weight? Looking for something to make blanket changing easier, now that the horses are home and the SO is helping...neck covers are not user friendly in the dark...he hasn't been too thrilled with helping Good thing the horses are very user-friendly

I'm considering a Northwind, as the Rambo doesn't fit this horse, but I don't love my other Dover blanket. Suggestions?

A brand that I don't think has been mentioned (if I missed it I apologize) that I have tried and LOVED this year is EOUS - www.equisupplies.com. I have a turnout sheet and a stable blanket in heavy and superb quality for the price which is great too. Fits my horse great as well. Coincidentally I have several human apparel items from them and have for years and know that the quality and warmth hold up from experiencing it myself first-hand. Maybe a new brand to try. I personally have good luck with weatherbeeta as Rambo/rhino etc do NOT fit my horse and rub terribly. Like the Dover brands as well for fit/value and they don't seem to rub either.

Exactly. If they can't source quality materials in China, they should go elsewhere. Most likely, they are so cost-focused that they're missing the point of having a blanket in the first place.

Maybe with the Irish economy tanking, Horseware will take their production home.

The weatherbeeta sheet I bought a couple of years ago has been worn about a dozen times, and is no longer waterproof. It has never been washed. There is a tear, but that I will blame on the pony. There's no excuse for having water soak through just because he rolled in it a couple of times.

I have to agree with this! I have found the new triple weave design to be better than the other fabric they had a couple years ago....

^ if you're near Calgary anyway, try Pegasus. They are really, really good and roughly the same price as a regular-priced Big D. You'll never beat a custom fit...

I've only tried summer Big D sheets over the whole season. I really like them though, and have only heard good things!

The concensus here seems to be Rambo or Big D? I haven't seen those brands in my area but I could always drive in to Calgary and poke around. My mares aren't hard on their blankets, but, then again, they only wear them if we're expecting severe weather storms. The minute the storm lets up, the blankets are whisked off again. Hummmmmmmmmmmm. I just don't want them experiencing another ice-pack blanket episode again.
It may save you some aggrevation if you returned them now. I have had nothing but good experiences as I've relayed with Rambo. Big D is on my list to try though.

The real pain is having as issue with a rip or tear when you need the sheets and blankets most. My first thought is "Now what do I do till I get a replacement?"

I have several Big D blankets that I bought in 1995. They have been used almost every year since then. One is a turnout and the other in a liner. The turnout is no longer waterproof (and I never tried to scotchgard it), but only 1 minor repair needed to be done to cover a 1"x1" snag on the inside of the blanket lining. The blanket liner has a quarter size repair done at the end of the blanket by the tail. I think the horse was rubbing his butt on the fence and snagged it. I've been pleased with their quality thus far and just ordered 2 more yesterday. I love the way they fit, too!

I have to stick up for the Pessoas....I have 3 - a tundra (300g) 1800D, a summit 1800D sheet, and a tundra (300g) 1800D with full neck. My only complaint is that the "removable" tail flaps are stupid. Just sew the things on! The tails flaps were ripped off two of them by a horse who loved to rip off tail flaps and since they velcro on, ripping them off was fun for him. I have had the Tundra (no neck) and the Summit sheet for going on 5 years now. They took a lot of beating when my horse was boarded in Ohio and in small group TO in the winter where ALL they did was pick on each other. Not one rip on any of them. Never had a rubbing issue either. My new horse is wearing the no neck Tundra right now and has been for a few days, no rubs on him either. I think they are very good for the money, or mine have been (if you don't mind the tail flap most likely coming off).

I also have a Weatherbeeta Taka medium weight (2008 model I think) and TriStar detach a neck and both of those have held up very well to pretty much constant wearing from Nov-Feb. I love the fleece lining in the Taka.

I definitely agree that anything under 1200D is just not a good idea!

I agree, I have 2 Pessoa's and love them so far. I have had the Summit sheet for about 3 seasons now and a mid weight (can't remember the name) both on their 3rd seasons, still going strong and definitely still waterprrof. My horse has become a serious "halter tag" player with his new (as of last winter) best buddy and his buddy will grab the shoulder of my guys clothes and so far they have held up to the playing (luckily new guy doesn't have his two front teeth, but still...). I actually saw the Pessoa's on TOTD, and am seriously considering buying another as a backup if they still have them in the right size today.

I've used the Dover Northwind blankets for over 4 years and have been very pleased. They are tough (1680D) and have stayed wind/waterproof, plus the lightweight 100 g fill is very versatile for changing weather conditions.

By comparison, with about the same or less use, a lightweight Rhino turnout I got on sale somewhere? has several rips and I don't think is waterproof anymore after less than 2 yrs

Hopefully your EOUS will hold up better than mine. It did fine for one winter, but barely survived a month of the second.

The 4 takas I bought in 2005 are still going strong on other horses. And I gave a spare neck rug to another cother's horse just yesterday. While I prefer the Rambos, I can say that the takas survived wooded areas and a herd of 19 horses and my horses who tested the takas in every way they could. No rips, no tears, and stayed waterproof with frequent washings in the Maytag.

I have a heavyweight Pessoa, older style. I've had it for 6 years. Minor repairs, not the best boarding situations and it still looks nearly new. It also fits my high withered, deep shoulder TB, for which most blankets are two small in the neck/chest. If the newer ones are like this one it's a very nice blanket.
