Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I used to completely love the Rider's International offerings from Dover--my first RI turnouts are STILL going strong, and it's been years, with the only failures being from vandalism that one particular horse is prone do committing on the apparel of his pasture mates. But the newer versions have not held up as well, with little tears becoming big ones, linings pulling out around surcingles and tears developing around the shoulder gussets because of weakness in the fabric and misaligned stitching.

The good thing is that Dover does let me exhchange these, and I have no complaints there--but it's tedious, and time consuming, and it gets hard to keep track of what spares I have on hand what with my inventory constantly in different stages of replacement.

Is the SmartPak "brand" blanket line the same as the Dover Rider's line? They look identical to me--even come in the same colors.

I have had no experience with the SmartPak blankets but likley they could be the same, just with a different label...

As for Dover, I also had an Amigo sheet (I forgot to mention that one in my original post!) purchased late last winter. It too ripped underneath where the surcingles attach.

When I called Dover on this issue, they said they would to have the sheet returned (at my expense) and would let me know if they would make an exchange. I explained that I had nothing else to use in the meantime, could they send one and I would overnight the ripped one back as soon as the new one came. Nope. Now that's crummy! For all the money I have spent with them over the decades, they should have made every effort to get me a replacement asap. The sheet is an item of neccesity not a luxury. So, for what it is worth, I am done with Dover.

Don't get a Pessoa, what a piece of crap! I haven't even owned mine a year and there are rips and the tail flap is completley ripped off( yes the velcro tail flap, the flap and all the velcrop ripped with it)Mind you, I got the blanket in February of last year and used it for a month and this is what happenend...

I wish I would have purchased this blanket from Dover since they honor the manufature warrantee of a year with out rips. Unfortunately I purchased it from Victory Canter (never again), they said I could have it laundered send it to them and then they would send it to the manufature to see if it was defective. Ummm... the fabric that has a one year guarantee ripped? I thought that would be end of story....

Victory Canter=terrible! They don't have a phone nunber so you can only deal with them through email...If they respond to you at all....\

And it rubbs my horses shoulders even with a shoulder guard!

PRICEY piece of crap too...I had a Pessoa summer/fly sheet for my pretty easy-on-the-blankets TB, it pretty much started to rip as soon as I buckled it up.

And it rubbs my horses shoulders even with a shoulder guard!
I found that too, the horse I had it on was a reasonably muscled, but narrow, TB (wore a MW Equipe saddle)...I don't know that you'd even get that blanket on a Quarter Horse or something with a wide chest.

So far Big D and my Pegasus custom blankets have held up the best. My Weatherbeeta Orican HW (2008 model) did well, but I only had it one season, worn every day by same TB above. Perfect shape at the end of winter. The Landa rainsheet (I think it is Landa, 2007 anyway??) is also a tough blanket, it's been through three horses worn daily.

A friend recommended never buying a winter turnout less than 1200D, so far that has served me well. I had a 600D blanket that immediately started falling apart. This is a fairly extreme climate, weeks below -40C in the winter, snow, ice buildup on blankets, heavy rain in the Spring and Fall. My horses have trees around the paddock, but not IN the paddock...and after owning Beamer the accident-prone Arabian, there is NOTHING sharp in the paddock EVAR.

Thanks for the warning on the Pessoa brand. I have not seen one first hand, but they looked decent on line...I will stay away now.

Why can't quality be part of what we purchase, in any item? I feel like I get ripped off a lot. And not just with horse products. Maybe "you get what you pay for" is truer now than ever...

So as someone that will be buying a blanket this spring for a TB who loves to Roll, and sometimes play blanket tag....

Brands to stay away from: Weatherbeeta, Pessoa, any more?

Brands to look at: Rambo (Tuff Rider), Schneiders anymore?

I had already been eyeing 1200D + for the fabric strength as I had a feeling I would need the extra strength.

Any other tips for a first time blanket buyer would be MUCH MUCH appreciated!!!

My guy killed his Baker in all of 6 weeks. He wore it all last season without trouble, but going outside in it this year has destroyed it. It's torn all along the hip edge... about 16 inches worth of torn fabric an inch or so from the hem. And then a lovely square-cornered tear where the front surcingle is attached.

I'll be buying a turnout sheet for him (probably just a cheapie Amigo), repairing the Baker and getting a new Baker to take to the shows as this one is no longer show quality.

Considering the damage to the Baker the hand-me-down state-line tack blanket is still holding up very well with no damage *knock on wood*. After 3 years on my old horse before it was used on this horse I think it was a sweet deal at $45, even if my guy shreds it this year.

I have a Weatherbetta Taka (I think that's how you spell it; that's how I pronounce it haha) and it's still going strong, but then again we bought it a long time ago, so it sounds like it keeps with the trend of the older versions being more durable

I also recently had serious blanket troubles.

I bought 4 Tough1 winter turnout blankets. Had to throw them on late in November for a sudden and very severe cold snap. I noted during the week of storming that the horses wearing these new blankets did not seem to be any warmer than had they been without and I felt the blankets and they seemed crunchy... but at -35, everything is "crunchy" including material, so I really didn't look into any further. I piled out the feed and kept on with hot complete feed mashes.

When the cold snap subsided, I pulled off the blankets and much to my shock and horror and outrage, I realized the blankets were MELTING. They were FULL and I mean absolutely chock-full of SNOW between the inner and external layers.

My poor horses had been dealing with very severe conditions with the additional bonus of wearing what essentially turned out to be ice packs.

I was really annoyed. You know, one might expect 1 blanket to fail, but not all 4. That is a clear indication of very poor quality. I hauled them all back to the store and got my money back. They were also "Made in China". All of these blankets were 1200 denier, claimed to be absolutely waterproof, wind proof and tear resistant. Well, they failed miserably in the first 2 categories, didn't they?

I replaced those with Weatherbeeta because I've had those before and always liked them,,,,, now after reading the OP's story, I'm worried. I haven't had to put those blankets on the horses yet, but I sure hope they don't fail at a time when they're needed most.

Frankly, I'm getting to the point where I am starting to put stuff down when I read the tag and it says "Made in China". The quality is usually extremely inferior. So this is a notice to all companies who might peruse these message boards... you lose a customer in me with your Made In China crap quality products.

We sell 200-300 WB blankets in our store every year. The Saxons are entry level, good for horses that aren't hard on blankets. Then Landa a little better hardware and quality.Oricans and Takas are the upper end, especially for horses that like to "play".The outer fabric is a lot tougher on the Orican & Taka.If you aren't happy with a product go back to the store that you got it from.I have found Weatherbeeta more than helpful if there is a problem.

The problem is, I am on my third round of the quality issues after a series of returns. It is not so much the outer fabric, it's the liner, which is like tissue paper.

I appreciate your input though. But why can't they manufacturer just get it right?

Schneiders sheets and customer service suck. I bought 2 sheets, both on their first season, both not waterproof. Schneiders told me it was my fault. I'll never buy from them again. Plus I've found a lot of their sheets/blankets give shoulder rubs, no matter what type of horse they're on.

I guess what I take issue with is the consistency: the Saxons *used to be* fine for my horses (who get group turnout, aren't the easiest on blankets, etc.) so I bought more of them - same color, same model, same vendor. I thought I was purchasing the same product...but not even close! The quality of materials has certainly changed, as the first Saxons I bought have lasted almost a decade, and the very same new models on the very same horses didn't last a season.

While I appreciate hearing that the customer service is good, frankly, I'd rather spend a little more and not have to deal with the hassle of returns/exchanges/doing without untl new blanket arrives. It also annoys me that I recommended them to clients based on my experience, and the sheets/blankets my clients purchased were NOT the quality I had come to expect from Weatherbeeta. And another thing: the Saxon sheets used to be lined with breathable, sturdy cotton material...now they're lined with black neoprene-like stuff that makes them perspire and get sticky. I so wish Saxon had stayed with their old model, as it was a great value and the quality was significantly better.

I was just going to ask if anyone had used Pessoa. I've had one for 6 years now and really, really like it a lot. Its in great condition still and is used from Dec - Feb. I like that its quilted and the weight is good for us in Fl. Never had any problems with rubbing either.

I just went on the search and found the very same one for my newest horse. Gotta say: HorseLuvers got it here in two days!

I agree on the "Made in China" line. A few years ago I decided I would try not to purchase anything made in China if I could help it, including clothes for my family.

That said, the turnout sheet and blanket my Tb wears may well have been made in China! lol I bought them quite a few (6 or so) years ago, and they are still going strong and are still waterproof.

                                    - a Rhino rain sheet (no insulation)
                                    - a Dover International Northwind medium weight turnout blanket.

Aside from being dirty, they are still in perfect condition, and my Tb LOVES to roll...then again, she doesn't exactly live in her blanket, she has a nice thick winter coat and only gets the insulated turnout when it's very cold and windy out (i.e, in the teens) or when she's outside in a blizzard.
Ottbs - The finish line is only the beginning!

                                      From a Tack Shop Owner's perspective -
Weatherbeeta is the absolute worst in terms of quality verses customer service.

Yes, their blankets fall apart. Yes, the company is aware of it.
But NO, they do not stand behind their products.

When we sell a Weatherbeeta prodcut to one of our customers and the item does not hold up to normal, everyday use, the company simply will not accept the return. It leaves the Tack Shop in a bad situation. In our case, we replace the product with a different brand and call the defective product a loss. But this shouldn't be.

I don't think it's simply a fact that the blankets are made in China. I believe that the quality control simply is not there. Over the years, Weatherbeeta products have been made cheaper to save money here and there and as a result, you have parts of the blanket that just will not hold up. (in this case, the lining. Several years ago, it was the buckles)

Invest in a Rambo. (not a Rhino or an Amigo, they do not compare) Yes, the cost is quite a bit higher up front, but it will long outlive any other blanket out there.

I hate to tell all the "I won't buy made in China product" people who are also saying "buy rambos," but IIR, a big thread about this time last year that discussed where blankets were made pointed out that most of the new rambo products were made in China.

I know my rambo newmarket stuff is all made in China.

Personally, I have a Pessoa sheet, Saxon blanket, and several Schneiders blankets and sheets that have all lasted extremely well. But by far I would say my Big D (made in USA) sheets and blankets are by far the best made products I have. I also have a made in Ireland olde Bucas that is great (but it has been pointed out not all Bucas products are Ireland made).

I agree. More expensive, but the QH show people here all seem to use Big D...the English people not so much. Not sure why...Big D is like the "Western Secret."

The aforementioned "Beamer the accident-prone Arabian" was very tough on blankets, his Big D sheet held up really well. I liked the front closures, they were double stitched leather with heavy-duty grommets on both sides, joined by a nylon "belt". MUCH better than the usual buckles, which on many blankets are cheap and get brittle in the cold weather. The leg straps on the Big D fasten into leather reinforced openings....just well made. Pegasus custom blankets use very similar techniques.
