So I just got an e-mail about a Greg Best clinic coming up in Washington. I'm very tempted to truck my two horses down and do it. I've heard he's very good, but would he be worth trailering down from Vancouver to go do? I'd have to stay in a hotel as well....I guess I just need someone to talk me into it. Would he really be worth all that expense?

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.

These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I've heard he's good for the rider, but you dont get much out of it as an auditor. Around here, he's about $650 per horse, so it would be pricey to do both horses.. maybe just take one?Rural Property Specialist

I say it's absolutely worth it. Are you considering doing the weekday clinic up near the border? Sounds like a cool facility and should be nice for a clinic.
As for his clinics, the sessions are all small, and of the 6 days (3 up north and 3 at the Evergreen Equestrian Center) that half will be the one with the smaller number of horses. When I rode at the clinic up in Ferndale in August I ended up with a private session. I didn't feel like I paid enough for it even though he isn't cheap! The man is a genius and is the only person I've ever ridden with who I wish I could ride with weekly. Having been on my own for many years now, and happy about it, that's a lot for me to say about anyone. I gain invaluable insight and ideas for my horses every time I ride with him. I'm taking two of mine to the weekend days....my AO Jumper and my 90-days-under-saddle baby. I'm really excited to ride both of them with him and I'm absolutely certain that I'll get a lot out of both sessions.
In addition, he's up here regularly to work with a group of us who do regular clinics and horseshows with him. So if you like the clinic there are more opportunities to ride with him throughout the year. I aim for 2 horses at each clinic every time he's here (3-4 times a year). I missed the horseshows this year (thanks to work travel, lame horse, etc.), but he's so great to ride with that I would have been at each of the horseshows if I could have as well.

Ya thats the one...I think its the 26th, 27th, and 28th. I just feel like it might be a cool experiance to go down and basically train with him for three days. It seems like it would a nice intensive training session. I just need to figure out if its even possible. There isn't that much time for me to organize going across the border etc. I think I will phone tommorow and talk with them though, just to see cost and stabling etc. I have a really nice up and coming horse that is talented but quite quirky, and a young jumper so it seems like he could really have some valuable insight. I'll keep you posted and maybe see you there.

If it's any help, I made the decision to head to the May Thunderbird show the weekend before the show and was able to get all of the paperwork/vet stuff done in time on 3 days notice. So you should have plenty of time to get everything border-crossing-related in order.
He's awesome with quirky horses. My AO Jumper is pretty much personified by the word "quirky" and he really helped me a lot with him as I moved him up from 1.10m to 1.20m to 1.40m. I'm really looking forward to getting to ride him with Greg again. He also helped a lot with my mare on her way to becoming "made"...she's also quite quirky and I love the fact that he appreciates how nice she is since I've had clinicians completely dismiss her since she's not the scopiest thing out there.
He's also really good with green horses....which is why I'm taking my barely broke 3yo to ride with him as well this time around rather than bringing my mare again.
I won't be there the 26-28th because I've got to work, but there should be some really good riders that will make for fun sessions to watch.

Ok, well that makes me feel better. Its good do know I should have time to get the paperwork in order, and I have my own trailer, so that part atleast should be easy. I'm definately calling them tommorow. I think this clinic might be just what I need to stay motivated over the winter.

Absolutely. He is amazing, you will get so much out of it. Unlike many clinicians I have seen, he really tailors his instruction to each horse and rider, it is not a cookie cutter set of exercises. And I disagree with whoever said he was not good for auditors. I did a 3 day clinic with him this year and watched every session, and learned a ton and was inspired by all of it. If you can swing it, I would highly, highly recommend it.

I audited 1 day of a clinic he did in Northern California last month, and I was really impressed. I got a lot of great ideas that I was able to immediately go home and apply to my horse.
As for the actual riding sessions, he seemed to be very focused on the technicalities of the courses and how to adjust your plan of attack based on the individual horses. He seemed to have a good read on each of the horses and I saw him be very patient and encouraging to timid riders, but I also saw him read the riot act to riders who seriously over estimated their abilities or simply didn't pay attention (like a rider who had been watching the clinic all day but still didn't know how many strides each line was riding).
I'm definitely planning on riding with him next time he comes around.

I'd say it is absolutely worth it. I did a clinic with him years ago - probably about 6-7 years ago - and I still remember things he told me. It was one of those experiences that just stayed with me. And I also second that he is great with quirky horses. It was amazing how well he seemed to know my horse after watching him go for just a few minutes. And I had a really quirky one - to put it mildly. I'd would say go for it if you can!

I agree that Greg Best is awesome!!! What a great clinic and well worth your money. I have done 3 clinics with him and loved every single one. I rode green hunter horses in each clinic and he was excellent with them. He is patient and understanding and also very approachable. He has a great sense of humor also and will not ridicule you in front of a crowd. He is a very down to earth man. He does alot of jumping over the three day clinic so make sure your horse is sound and in good shape. I hope you go and enjoy the clinic as much as I did! Good luck!

I had the opportunity to audit two Greg Best clinics and it was a wonderful experience. He has a great understanding of horse and rider combinations and changes the exercises accordingly! What I really liked about him was that even if the rider was not necessarily on the nicest, scopiest horse around he still found ways to keep it interesting and make it beneficial.

I audited a 2 day clinic a year ago and would LOVE to have the opportunity to do so again. I really enjoyed it and agree that he is awesome with the quirky horses. He really challenged the riders into "less is more" in the bitting department with the hot horses. That and taking the stirrups off the saddle on the duckers!
I posted a big thread on all of it last year I think...
I loved his bag of tricks too (although was somewhat glad it wasn't my butt in the saddle).DIY Journey of Remodeling the Farmette: http://weownblackacre.blogspot.com/
