Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. Youre responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the Forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading itdetails of personal disputes may be better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts, though are not legally obligated to do so, regardless of content.

Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting. Moderators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts unless they have been alerted and have determined that a post, thread or user has violated the Forums policies. Moderators do not regularly independently monitor the Forums for such violations.

Profanity, outright vulgarity, blatant personal insults or otherwise inappropriate statements will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Users may provide their positive or negative experiences with or opinions of companies, products, individuals, etc.; however, accounts involving allegations of criminal behavior against named individuals or companies MUST be first-hand accounts and may NOT be made anonymously.

If a situation has been reported upon by a reputable news source or addressed by law enforcement or the legal system it is open for discussion, but if an individual wants to make their own claims of criminal behavior against a named party in the course of that discussion, they too must identify themselves by first and last name and the account must be first-person.

Criminal allegations that do not satisfy these requirements, when brought to our attention, may be removed pending satisfaction of these criteria, and we reserve the right to err on the side of caution when making these determinations.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While its understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and its related to a horse for sale, regardless of whos selling it, it doesnt belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be bumped excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the alert button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your Ignore list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary youd rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a users membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Under the age of 18 members of the AHSA, (not the USET or USEF) that have had sex with an older member of the AHSA must number in the thousands. Some eventually married, some had no ‘business’ connection and were simply 2 people, some were raped, some were manipulated. All of these according to SS should lead the over 18 participant to being banned from the USEF. How do fellow members of the USEF feel about this?
I see this is your first post. It’s not a good one.

“Being a homosexual” was never a crime. Engaging in sodomy was a crime in various states. I was an adult in the 70’s and while there was certainly disapproval of homosexuality from some sectors, neither law enforcement nor most adults tried to meddle with what two same sex adults (male or female) did in private. Even if it was still technically a crime.

So George was not committing a crime “simply by being alive”, even in 1968. Even if homosexual sex acts were illegal then, if he had kept all 10,000 partners of legal age, he would not have had any problem then, much less now.

This really has nothing to do with homosexuality. It has to do with underage sex partners.

      • Yes, let’s leave a man who brags about sleeping with 10,000+ people and taking minors to Studio 54 up on the arenas. He’s been under investigation since 2012! Let’s not forget that.

Like it or not, enforced or not, GM has broken numerous laws and has to pay the price. Legality is not our moral compass. SS can finally attempt to right the wrong here. He’s been quite brazen, as most men who think they are untouchable are. His past will never catch up with him...but it should. A lifetime ban is a slap on the wrist.

        • I just wonder if many of the people in the ISWG have bothered to do any investigations beyond talking to some barn friends or reading a few articles before joining that group.

This thread is now at 82 pages. It takes a determined individual to read that much background vs listening to a few friend/colleagues spout their opinions and then echo that.

There are three possibilities. A) They have not looked beyond the barn. B) They have and still don’t care. Or C) They did read and investigate but have zero clue about anything that doesn’t involve horses.

I am sure people have been reading this thread and keeping up. Just not posting. I’ve seen several CoTHers post “I Stand With George.” Not sure if they joined the group or not.

I also find these groups interesting because they are closed. If one is so sure of their opinion why have a closed group?

Anything new come out since The NY Times article?
I haven’t seen anything, but I try not to follow Facebook to closely.
Sorry, but I swear last time I looked this thread was only 40 pages!

              • I have a question about the duality of coach and pedophile.

As as a coach, can we assume the abuser wants their students to win? And to win, wouldn’t the student have a better chance of winning if not being abused? (The strength of survivors is truly awe inspiring - how these kids perform at the top levels of their sport while suffering abuse from the very people who are cheering them on is beyond my comprehension.)

How does an abuser reconcile those seemingly conflicting positions of coach and abuser?

In reading about GM I am reminded of the podcast about Larry Nassar called Believed. It seems Nassar never believed he was causing harm to those he abused. For those with more knowledge on the subject, is this common thinking of abusers?

It’s interesting to compare and contrast LN and GM. LN ingratiated himself with the entire community in order to build trust and gain access to kids. He was so beloved that people didn’t believe their own kids who reported his abuse. Yet from the little I’ve read of GM (his book has been sitting on my bookcase unread for years - and now I’m debating whether to read it or throw it away) GM seemed the opposite of LM - openly bullying people, living a wild lifestyle, and being constantly surrounded by rumors.

                    • The whole situation hurts my heart and my head

Do I stand with George? No, I stand with those who stand up as survivors.

Do i I regret what I learned in his clinic when I had the opportunity to attend as a rider and watcher? No, he is a master horseman and teacher. That experience has been priceless in my development as an adult rider.

Would i I attend one again now? I don’t think I even know the answer

How do I balance a wealth of knowledge against the disclosure (not whispers) that he has done some very bad things? How do I process that the very things that make him such a skilled horseman and teacher also helped him do the things he has been investigated as doing?

We all have lost. The survivors, GM, the equestrian community, all of us have lost and there are no winner here. My heart breaks for all.

                      • As of the present day, a number of states still have anti-sodomy laws on the books. Some differentiate between homo and hetero sexual sodomy. However, because of a Supreme Court decision in 2003, these laws are essentially unenforceable, but have never been formally repealed.

They did a great job of illustrating how beloved he was, and how hard it was for even some of the survivors to come around to the idea that he was a predator. A lot of it rang very familiar.
I finished this over the weekend. I recommend it as well for anyone who asks the questions, “why didn’t you report it?” or “where were the parents?” or “why did you wait so long to report it?”

If you’ve not been the victim of inappropriate behavior, you really cannot appreciate what victims experience, in my opinion.

I love your post. You are absolutely right we’ve all lost.

How I deal with it and how I make my decision is we can get the knowledge elsewhere. I had a supervisor and mentor get thrown in jail for similar acts although they were much worse. I can get that professional knowledge else where. Same with riding. Might it take longer? Might it be not as good? Maybe. I will not sacrifice my moral compass for knowledge concerning work. I absolutely won’t do it for a sport.

fordtraktor has brought up some interesting points about a possible legal challenge to Safe Sport via the Sherman Act. It would amount to an unfair restriction of trade though, and it’s not a simple or easy case. I only grasp the basic theory behind this because of a background ion Macroeconomics, and studying the Sherman Act in detail in two different classes in terms of economic situations that gave rise to it.

But all these other INSANE comparisons to really ugly parts of history involving totalitarianism and human rights abuses, fascist governments, etc? This is absurd. People need to get a grip.
Thank you. Just to be completely clear to everyone, my posts about the Sherman Act have been informational, to clarify mistakes about future procedural options that both sides make regularly.

By by no means are they a defense in this particular case, or an “I Stand With George” declaration. That shouldn’t have to be said, but I just don’t want anyone getting the wrong impression when emotions are running high and there’s a lot of info to process.

                              • Bristol Bay Thank you. I struggled with whether to share that story as I’m sure it is an agonizing read for some parents who thought they were providing their child with an incredible opportunity with the best of intentions.

Horses and horse sport continues to be an incredibly positive and healing influence in my life. As others have pointed out, the fervent supporters of GHM seem to have lost site of the fact that the whole point of SafeSport is to try to make all children’s experience of whatever sport they choose equally positive and to give participants the tools to identify and stop abusers before they hurt more children. I’d like to think that deep down we all want the same thing.

I did go back and edit some typos in my original post. If you need to inject a little humanity into the discussion elsewhere or give a textbook example of why we need SafeSport, please feel free to copy and share.

                                • Just found this thread a few days ago, have not read but the latest pages.
Still trying to digest all that.

My question is, if SS has been investigating for two years as told and has enough proof to ban as they have, since abusing kids is and has always been against existing laws, was the police notified?

Such abusers are jailed when found out, as the media reports.
There are several such stories ongoing right now.
How come GM is not in jail, or is he?
I may have missed that in all these pages.

They just had a story on CBS news with a new law in NYS starting August 14 where anyone that any time was abused has one year to file about it.

Those in NYS may want to check into that.

                                      • snaffle635 That's such an interesting point, because I always assumed that if George Morris fell afoul of changing standards, it would have been because of his bullying coaching, not anything sexual. Combined with the fact that any jokes I personally heard about his romantic life were always in the context of men who were of age (i.e., stuff like, "I bet he has a hot, twentysomething Brazilian boyfriend"), I never thought anything like this was in his past. Which makes me wonder if the appearance of candor in his autobiography was a case of hiding in plain sight.

                                        • And the sherman act appears to only prohibits unreasonable retrictiion on commerce. Assuming such a ban is a restriction and it is challenged under that Act, the purpose of ss on its face is reasonable one would argue. While laws may not always be drafted so as to avoid conflict w other statutes and the Consitution, it was most likely all considered in the drafting of this bipartisan bill.
