Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. Youre responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the Forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading itdetails of personal disputes may be better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts, though are not legally obligated to do so, regardless of content.

Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting. Moderators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts unless they have been alerted and have determined that a post, thread or user has violated the Forums policies. Moderators do not regularly independently monitor the Forums for such violations.

Profanity, outright vulgarity, blatant personal insults or otherwise inappropriate statements will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Users may provide their positive or negative experiences with or opinions of companies, products, individuals, etc.; however, accounts involving allegations of criminal behavior against named individuals or companies MUST be first-hand accounts and may NOT be made anonymously.

If a situation has been reported upon by a reputable news source or addressed by law enforcement or the legal system it is open for discussion, but if an individual wants to make their own claims of criminal behavior against a named party in the course of that discussion, they too must identify themselves by first and last name and the account must be first-person.

Criminal allegations that do not satisfy these requirements, when brought to our attention, may be removed pending satisfaction of these criteria, and we reserve the right to err on the side of caution when making these determinations.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While its understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and its related to a horse for sale, regardless of whos selling it, it doesnt belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be bumped excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the alert button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your Ignore list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary youd rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a users membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • oneequestrienne Yes, I knew that it was Kathy Hobstetter's post and Peggy was just sharing it, not advocating the idea. That's what I was trying to say, but obviously, didn't say it very well. I blame lack of caffeine, but apologise to Peggy anyway.

I can't speak to his curriculum vitae or his supposed military career in the 90's, but he was the instructor for at least one recreational elective offering at Mason, Introduction To Horsemanship, for a very brief time, before someone else stepped up and offered it. I don't know if he was given the boot because of his status - at the time - as a sex offender or because he did something wrong or because he just didn't want to do it, but it was not a long-term thing for him. His use of the term "Professor" doesn't make him a Professor, as the term is just generically used in the paperwork to refer to the instructors or "whomever is in charge".
Thus do we growl that our big toes have, at this moment, been thrown up from below!

You forgot that he was also Christopher Reeve's groom. I'm surprised that so many in the local area have never heard of such an illustrious "BNT" like him.

How many kids will get abused in the meantime?
Well, probably none, because he was going to sit in jail waiting for that trial. Which I guess some people consider less onerous than an interim suspension.

I think she was just using that as an example of how long a trial could take and how long someone following BN "wants" for SS could be around kids if no interim suspension was issued.

              • What is the timeline for GMs appeal? Is there a date we should be looking forward to for an answer?

If SafeSport receives notice of a criminal
case that ends in something other than acquittal (including pleading down to a lesser charge in a plea bargain), the person is immediately banned without an investigation. Those are the cases listed as “criminal disposition”. In equestrian, 75% of the bans are “criminal disposition” as opposed to the result of SafeSport investigations.

I'd guess we would have to keep an eye on the news - I forget where I got a "50 days" number but that's what popped into my head first.... then they'll ask for continuance/time until the defense was prepared on some regular basis.

                    • Well, Tom's ban was listed as of December 2018. Then there was a "pending appeal" which apparently became final just about the same day as George's ban was announced. I think SS said about 45 days for the appeals process, but noted that that timeline was fluid, depending on circumstances.
Actually it's kind of handy that the ban takes effect immediately, because it removes the incentive for the banned person to drag out the appeals process.

Alot of the really good riders are in someone's back yard, not seen by the "elite" coaches....I digress......no comment on the Morris thing; still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing.....

I was in the SafeSport Overhaul group for a few days. It is the usual incoherent ranting about “unconstitutional” and “no due process”.

I posted a reply saying that “due process” is not a zero/one thing, instead it is a continuum with, say, the level of due process of zero for a 1930’s lynch mob up to level 10 due process for the US criminal justice system. On this continuum, say SafeSport is a five.

My point was that useful and potentially achievable reform might be achieved by identifying one or two or three specific changes that would move SafeSport from a 5 to a 6 or a 7. Doesn’t matter if you want to say that SafeSport now is a 2 or an 8. The point is that the useful discussion is how to move up the ladder one or two steps.

The are legitimate reasons that SafeSport was designed with a level of due process less than the due process of the criminal justice system. No reform will be achieved by continuing to scream “No due process”.

My assessment was that most people just want to bash SafeSport. Kathy Hobsetter may want reform, but as her Gofundme statement illustrates, she is not running the group in a way that can produce coherent, specific suggests for improvement.

I quit the group after being scolded by Kathy in a PM for correcting a poster on the age of consent in the US since 1920. The poster provided a link to a Wikipedia article, and stated that the article said that as of 1920, most states had an AOC of 14.
Me: No, it says that as of 1920 most states had age of consent of 16-18.
OP: No, it says that feminists “wanted” to raise the AOC to 16 to 18.
Me: Here is the direct quote in the Wikipedia article that you posted which says that when Georgia raised the AOC to 14 in 1918, it was then the only state with age of consent lower than 16-18.
Kathy scolded me for contradicting the OP, and said that everyone was entitled to their opinion.
                            I left.

It seems like I've heard negative stories about him for, oh about 6-7 years, but these have been of the "lack of business and management skills" variety and how he's wasting a gold mine of a location. RC always seems to come up in conversations where people sit around and gossip over drinks or sitting in the stands about making money on lessons in the horse business. His sexual predator status was news when first mentioned on the RG thread.

Having said that, I've never met him and, since I have my own place, have had no need to visit RC in recent years.

I'm reading that book of his now, and that's part of the first bit, he did ride there at first. But he says he didn't stay there longer than he had to because it wasn't enough riding and was too much marching and other stuff, so moved on to a private riding club.

Which is why Bonnie Navin's behavior on social media makes me wonder if she is fit and capable for practicing law. She unprofessionally shares details publicly complete with poor grammar and riddled with emotion. Then she can't even keep her own facts straight, contradicting herself in a manner that makes her look like she is grasping at straws. To top it all off, she tags convicted sex offenders in her posts to help support her claims.

Are state bar associations really okay with their members behaving in such a manner?!?

                                        • Hi Texarkana and dannyboy - SmartPak here! Please know that as a company, we take SafeSport violations very seriously as they are in direct conflict with our mission of healthy horses and happy riders. We want to clear up the confusion regarding our association with Tom Navarro and River Chase Farm, since it’s been mentioned here a couple of times. SmartPak does not currently, nor have we ever, sponsored Tom Navarro or River Chase Farm. We appreciate you drawing our attention to River Chase Farm’s unauthorized use of our logo on their Sponsors page. Having reviewed it, we found that this was seemingly a copied image of an outdated corporate logo that has not been use for several years. We also see that, in any case, the unauthorized logo has now been removed from River Chase Farm’s website. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1-800-461-8898 or CustomerCare@SmartPak.com and one of our team members would be happy to help. – the SmartPak Team
