  • Baby Horse Bit?

At the end of the month we will be heading to our first horse show. The horse is a four year old and has a pretty solid relationship with the bit and is always very happy and accepting. She is schooled in a Neue Schule eggbutt and goes beautifully in that.

For the show, I went out and purchased cheaper D-ring with a copper link:

The horse is never disrespectful but when I ride her in the Dee Ring, she is rather dull and our connection seems delayed. She also normally has a nice white foam when we are done riding in the eggbutt but the D-ring, her mouth is dry.

Any other forms of a D-ring I should try? Thank you!

Why change her bit if she is going beautifully in a Neue Schule?

I agree, however, for this show, a D-Ring would be more appropriate. This is why I dislike showing...

Personally, I say who cares. Ride in the bit she likes. You shouldn't be worried about being competitive at your first few shows anyways. You want her to be as relaxed and happy as you can, if that's the bit she prefers then use that. Nothing that says you can't.

I ride hunters and I ride in a loose ring KK Ultra. I haven't had a problem winning any classes in it. I've tried a d-ring version of the same bit and my horse just sucks back. As long as it is a legal bit, I'm with RainWeasley and say ride her in what she likes best.

Another vote to keep her in the bit she goes well in

Neue Schule makes a D ring, if you’re really hung up on the aesthetic. But I would just go and enjoy the show in the eggbutt!

I'm with pp. Why mess with a good thing unless it's an illegal bit for the type of competition? For as many shows as I've hung around, the only time I've noticed the aesthetics of a bit was at League finals where one pony had like 4" of extra curb chain hanging down that jangled every stride.

(I'd bet $20 what happened there was they got to the show with the normally steady school horse and decided he needed more bit after the 10th time a short stirrup kid couldn't stop him. They looked around desperately and realized all they had was the Pelham for their 17hh draft cross and threw it on the pony with a wing and a prayer. Lol)

The important thing is that the bit is legal.. If the bit is legal and the horse goes well in it, then it is appropriate.
Some riders change their horse, they change their saddle, they change their teacher; they never change themselves.

Remember the horse does all the work, we just sit there and look pretty.

Thank you everyone, I feel better about it already! There are reasons why I have always disliked showing and its sad when you get down to such a simple decision such as which bit to use based on fashion. We will go with the eggbutt!

Eggbutts are fine for the hunters!
