Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Spinoff: Is your horse 'suitable' for you

The thread about big horse small rider made me curious. Does the conformation, body type, and height of your horse match well with you? What would suit you the best? Pictures!

My current horse and I look totally matched. He's 16.1, but very refined and angular. I'm 5'4" and ALL legs with stick limbs and a bean pole body. Although his narrow body makes gripping hard, we look great together! He's naturally not heavy on the bit (although he likes contact) so it doesn't look like he's yanking me out of the saddle.

Overall, we look well matched and the judges really seem to like it. Although, my long legs would like a thicker barrell to have something to hold onto!

I'm too small on anything over, oh, 15.2 or so. I look tiny on Nikki and she's not even 16 hands.

          This thread makes me chuckle.

My favorite mare is a 16.3h big boned, old fashioned type Dutch mare. However, she truly is too big for me (I'm 5'3" with short Japanese legs, which I inherited from my dad!). As much as I love her, I easily get popped out of the tack, when she really jumps the wider oxers. Needless to say, she is now co-owned with Aaron Vale who rides her beautifully and she can be produced to her utmost potential with me holding her back because I can't stay with her jump.

          See... :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylpC9_8gIyA

One of our other mares, on the other hand, is on a good day 16.0h and very short coupled with a slightly short neck. She fits me to a tea! My mother has decided that because of this, she will be a keeper and "my" mare. I have to say, I do feel much more secure on her and rarely get jossled out of the tack on this little one! I call her my little bouncy ball because she's so compact and has such a bouncy, light step.

My big guy and I are a very good size match, I'm pretty tall and leggy, he's well past 17hh. I need to measure him, but we think he's 17.1 or 17.2. He's built like a WB, hardly looks like a TB unless you know your stuff. If you look at a picture of us, you'd never know how big he is or tall I am.

My older guy, not so much. I make him look almost like a large pony, lol.

MCarver.... lol. DD had a big grey (white) NZ sport horse that we leased. So did not fit her.. she is 5'4" and he was about 17.2 hands and wide. I have a video of her falling off him but not as graceful nor did she hang on for four strides!

Her horses now are the size she seems to prefer - 16.1 and regular build. She is petite, has a fairly long torso, and shorter legs so she is not really fond of those bigger horses.

I think so! I think his height is perfect, but I think for my next horse something a little less round would be helpful so I could start wrapping my leg more.

Other than that I think we are pretty close

Size-wise, none of my horses are ideal. The horses that I personally own range from 15.2- 16.3, all theoretically too small for me. But this isn't a bad thing, they are all sales prospects destined for jrs and ammies who in all likeliness will be much shorter than I am. I do have one client's horse that I ride that fits me pretty well (he is 17.1). If I did eq he would be the best match for me.

I feel like I may look just a touch big on my horse, though not quite as much now that he's maturing and filling out. Fortunately his future is not in hunters or eq, so it shouldn't be a problem.
He's 15.3 1/4hh and fairly lightly built, wide across the back but slab-sided. I'm 5'8" w/ long legs.
I think that we're fairly suitable for each other, he has a long neck and a sweeping stride that makes me feel like I'm riding a slightly larger horse.
People who are used to seeing massive horses w/ comparitively small riders may think he could use another hand to be an ideal mount for me, but for all practical purposes we're great together! I never feel that we're awkward or unbalanced due to size incompatibility.
                        EDIT:
here's a couple pics, please don't make fun of my eq. =/

My guy is just under 16.2, TB and while he's big boned, he doesn't have a particularly big barrel.

I'll 5'6" and leggy and he fits me fine. Any smaller and he'd be too small, but he's perfect as is. Despite his TB breeding he's slow and downhill and really benefits from a (soft) in the tack ride, so aesthetically he needs to be a little bigger so I don't look silly.

my horse is over 17h and a big built TB. I am a curvy girl so he fits me well however it was just recently brought to my attention that my legs are short and I actually look kind of small on him! Its ok though, I think we are very suited to each other

Mine is a 14.2 QH and I'm 4'10 1/2", so I think we're a pretty perfect match size-wise. He looks small when I see someone else ride him, but he looks like a large horse if I see pictures of just the two of us. (:

My newest horse and I match in size pretty well but our personalities are what are really the same. We are both high strund, love going fast, crazy, stubborn and hard-headed. Yeahh a really great combination

Nope! My mare is 16hh on a good day and I'm around 5'9".
It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't want to be a hunter!

He's 16.3 and I'm 5'1". When I got him (March) he had to learn to walk with his head down so he could see me, as he was used to a rider who was 6'. I think we're an ok fit because he's long legged with a smallish body and I'm able to effectively get my legs on him. He's starting to get a hay belly to match mine.... though this pic was a month and a half ago so mine has gotten smaller! Personality-wise, we're a perfect fit, so the fact he's a little taller than ideal for me is ok.

Sorry about the wrong saddle type for this forum.

I don't know think I've been too big for any of the horse's I've ridden for extended periods.

On the little 15.2 QH I leased for two years

                                      On my 16.almost 2 WB

                                      On my trainer's 15.3 TB

                                      on my 16.2h TB

I'm biggest on the two tallest horses, both mine. And that's because they are both "refined" and well, I'm not. They are both slab-sided, which helps make my round thighs look longer, so that's good. And I hope to be more refined soon, so....

My horse suits me pretty well. I'm 5'6 with long legs and she's a 16-16.1hh Oldenburg with a normal build. I don't really have an ideal horse as I fit well on a 17.3hh horse(which I used to ride) down to a 15.2hh horse with a very large barrel! I used to ride a large pony and I did look a little big on her because of my leg length. I try to stay above 16.1hh if the horse has a normal sized barrel, just to accommodate my legs.
