Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I'll check in with ice here in north NH... I didn't so much mind the rain (resisted the urge to go put a rain sheet on - they've got shelter, and it wasn't cold!), and then the snow was very picturesque. Now it's just nasty. I was supposed to go out with friends tonight, but after watching/hearing the cars sliding around on the road when I went to check the mail at 5, I decided discretion was the better part of valour - so here I am.
Times like this I'm happy I board, though - I have to do my own blanketing (though mostly I keep telling myself that girl doesn't NEED a blanket, as she's fuzzy and has shelter and it's only getting down to the upper 20s), but it seems like money VERY well spent right now not to have to be out in the ice feeding, hauling hay, and generally being out in the miserableness. Thank you, BOs/BMs!

I never miss boarding except in weather like this. Good Lord it's just plain gross out.Originally posted by Kementari View PostThank you, BOs/BMs!
Hunting was canceled, something is wrong with the dryer and my clothes are coming out with holes in them, the wood for the fire is soaked, I went shopping for an evening dress which was just loads of fun let me tell you, came home to muddy dogs who had napped on my bed (which is why I bought a bedspread the color of Virginia clay), the horses and goats were miserable and fighting to come in for feeding, and then I had to drag a dead deer out of the front yard which of course had been gnawed on, was in pieces, and was soaking wet. went to collect eggs and noticed the roof in the coop is leaking and making a smelly mess.
Then I stomped into the house - soaking wet, mud all over me, freezing, and ate a box of peanut brittle.

The day ain't over yet.
Egg nog sounds good. I've got egg nog in the fridge. Chocolate chip mint ice cream in the freezer. Doesn't that cover all the food groups? Is mint a vegetable?
Sigh. It's raining harder now. I bet the first time that darn rooster sees me in a rain slicker he's going to attack me. That's just going to be a dandy way to start the day tomorrow - getting my butt kicked by an eight pound bird.
Yeah - time for some egg nog!Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware

People like me (the ones doing the feeding, dragging horses around in the sleet for 12 hours a day) thank you! But can you pass the message alone to the BM of my barn - you know, the part about how your horse is fuzzy and it's getting to the upper 20's and she doesn't need a binkie? Because I'm getting really tired of having to take each and every horse out of their stall to go to turnout and having to put a baker sheet, a heavyweight stable blanket, and a heavyweight turnout with a neck cover on it over the other two blankets for EVERY HORSE going outside.... when it's 30 degrees out. I mean REALLY. And they look at me like I'm just plain abusive when I just put ONE heavy-ish turnout on my clipped mare.Originally posted by Kementari View PostTimes like this I'm happy I board, though - I have to do my own blanketing (though mostly I keep telling myself that girl doesn't NEED a blanket, as she's fuzzy and has shelter and it's only getting down to the upper 20s), but it seems like money VERY well spent right now not to have to be out in the ice feeding, hauling hay, and generally being out in the miserableness. Weird week so far! 18 on Sunday (brrrr), 55 and raining yesterday (that is OK) and 34 and raining today (eeeewwwww). Ours went out with a shed and didn't want to leave the shed to come back in for dinner so I was standing out there at the gate banging on the feed bucket to get them to come in. (Nope...I didn't really want to walk out to the shed in all that mud and the almost freezing rain ...which went PLOP on my head with a thud but wasn't QUITE frozen...to go get them either!). They finally decided to make a run for it and as I tried to move out of the way quickly nearly got my poor boots sucked off!Providence Farm

I think this is why the current barn requires everyone to do their OWN blanketing... It's not a show barn, no clips in sight, and a few of the oldies need blankets but most are nekkid. I OWN enough blankets to sink the Titanic, but I've always been a minimalist when it comes to using them.
If it's gonna be below zero, or very cold and wet (my girl lives out) then I'll get something on her. Otherwise, she seems quite happy as is! In fact, she's even (according the the BO) given up on the shivering every time a drop of rain falls even when it's 80, which she used to do when she was younger - thank goodness! (And I'm not exaggerating about the 80 thing...
)
Mr High Maintenance is leased out, so his more extensive blanketing needs aren't bothering me this winter.

This barn owner keeps the horses in for this mess.
They were in yesterday, but went out last night. It started raining again this morning, they came in and will stay in until I get home from work tomorrow night.
I would much rather clean the stalls every 8 hours over a 36 hour period than have them all miserable, making mud by the gates.
It will clear up tomorrow around lunch time, and my property drains well, so by the time I get home, they'll be ready to go out.
I do 24x7 turnout about 5 months of the year, 16 hours turnout a day the rest, but when we have 2-3 days like this, the horses generally prefer to stay in, and the preservation to the fields is worth the added work.

I would like the rain to stop. We have a ton of ice right now and tree limbs and possibly trees themselves keep falling. It's bad. We are surrounded by pines. I am worried that a pine will fall on the fence or my trailer or the house or the shed row or my truck or God forbid one of the horses themselves

How's everyone holding up with this ice storm?
So far, so good (knock on wood for us).
Minor damage, but have kept power (at least until a branch hits the overhead lines).
Roads are impassable due to debris.
Horses are really freaked out by the cracking and crashing trees but fortunately no trees near the barn. They are out in small run-ins and getting some pretty good exercise in the small space that isn't icy or 6" deep in water and slick mud.
Should be interesting when the wind picks up with all the ice on the trees.
Hope everyone's okay!

Yeah....the rain stopped! The barn held up for the first 2 days of rain but on the third day it flooded (last night). Sigh. I now have 13 stalls of flooded bedding that will weigh a ton and a half to slog out . Sigh. We have a lot of springs on our property.....when it rains forever like this the ground get sooo saturated that the water comes UP the french drains in the barn. Excavating in the past helped some.....but once the water starts to come UP the drains there is nothing to be done.Providence Farm

Now it's raining again.
Our creek is up over the road. We had to use the tractor to pull the plow truck out of the gully the aforementioned creek has created in said road. Luckily for me, I"m parked at the other entrance (because if the 4WD F350 couldn't make it through, my little RWD 1/2 ton DEFINITELY has no hope!
).
We do still have power...for now...
I'm guessing even the outside horses have been brought in (there are enough stalls for everyone when it's really nasty). I can't get down the road to check on my girl, but I trust the BO has things under control!
