  • Thoughts on Lameness

Monday after work I care home to a mostly 3 legged lame horse. She was very lame at the walk and even standing in her stall was pointing or bending her leg (LF). I gave her bamamine, cold hosed front and back left, put sore no more liniment on all 4and wrapped her all around with BOT wraps. Tuesday morning she was MUCH improved - standing on the LF and maybe a 2/5-3/5 lame instead of basically 5/5. I didn’t give any NSAIDS on Tuesday as I wanted to see how she would feel without it. She has her wraps off during the day and then back on again at night. I just checked her an hour ago and she’s 3.5/5-4/5 (worse than yesterday) and lame in front and in back on the left.

Through all of it she has had 0 swelling. Monday her legs (both left) were HOT from knee/ hock down, yesterday she had a little heat in her LF fetlock, today there is no heat anywhere in any of the legs. She has 1 very small cut (smaller than a dime) on her LF on her pastern and about an inch long scrape on her LH cannon. I can flex all legs with no issue and can firmly palpate everywhere with her only reaction being thinking I am going to give her scratches.

I am calling our lameness specialist in the morning, but can’t seem to think of what could be wrong. I don’t think it is an abscess as the evidence (scrapes on her legs and mud on her + her blanket) points to her falling on her side.

She may have slipped and hurt something higher up than where you’re looking.
Could be an abscess and the heat/scrapes is unrelated.
My mare once presented this way, with no scrapes or cuts of any kind, and finally a leg blew up after a week as cellulitis.
