Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      Inspiring message

I did not know Mr. Sawin. But reading all of these posts is very inspiring. Life can be tragic and painful.

But what a life! It's amazing what a positive influence he had. He accomplished what I would lke to be able to say when my life is over.

When Mr. Sawin meets God, I think God will say, "Phil, you used your ticket well".

I will work harder to use my ticket well.

My condolences to his family and friends.

It's just too tragic to wrap my mind around. There is not a more caring, kind, considerate, or just genuinely good person than Phil Sawin. He was the first one to be at Matt's side helping him get Diva up when she fell, and was always there watching the final kid cross the finish line...even when he was missing his football game and trying to listen to it on the truck radio.

He volunteered quite frequently to bring his GPS out and help map cross country courses for other people, and to offer his years of expertise to us when building fences. His own courses were always well thought out, challenging while being fair to the horse, and generally just fun. We always knew we could run one of his tracks and not be afraid for the safety of our horses, because nothing would be trappy, the footing would be good, and we likely would have learned something by the end. He was master of placing plain looking fences in such a way that if you didn't ride a good line you could easily get a runout when you least expected it.
On a recent course walk Danny W. noted that before a number of fences there would be a tree next to the path, at just about the point you wanted to start thinking about a good approach...when we asked Phil if that was intentional or accidental he just smiled like he had a secret. We all learned so much from him, but at each clinic he was out there learning with us, from the ground, planning his next improvement. If a clinician set up a particular exercise with show jumps, before you know it Phil would build a permanent jump and incorporate it into the course. He never seemed to think he was a master at what he did, just as I'm sure true masters never do.

It breaks my heart because I hold the Sawin's up as an example of the kind of integrity I strive for, and as proof that hard work and fair treatment wins in the end.

Please pray for his wife and daughter. Ruth is an equally fantastic person in her own right, but her strengths and contributions seem just as consuming as Phil's. What they do for eventing in our area is unmatched.

Sorry, I know I go on and on....some things are just so unfair, and the universe is unbalanced right now with the loss of one of the truly good ones. To meet someone who NEVER said an unkind word about anyone, and was respectful to every person he met, is a rarity. Even if he was juggling fifteen things at one of the biggest shows of the year, you never felt like he was rushing if you asked him a question, and he would drop what he was doing to go hammer in a nail if it was a danger to the horses.

        Perfectly said LucyJane.

I spent many a hot afternoon out at Pine Hill in my younger riding days. Phil was truly a good guy. Hardworking, honest and INCREDIBLY funny.

Such a sad loss...RIP Phil and to Ruth and his daughter my most sincere sympathies.

I'm another one who never made it down to Pine Hill, but never heard anything but praise for the Sawin's and the event.

There were many sharing thoughts and stories about Phil at Meadow Creek this past weekend and Lucy Jane's tribute here echos all

Pine Hill is my favorite horse trial in Area 5 and has the best courses.

Thank you Sawin family for everything you have done for us in Texas. Ruth and Ellie, we are keeping you in our prayers.

As most of the horse world is now aware, there is very sad news for all of our equestrian friends. Our dear friend, fellow equestrian and owner of Pine Hill Equestrian center, Phil Sawin, had a tragic accident last Friday morning at Pine Hill and passed due to his injuries (not horse related ). . Our sincere sympathy and prayers go to his wife, Ruth, and their daughter during this terrible loss. I know that many people have been touched with their kindness and commitment to the horse community and will be eager to offer a helping hand in many ways .

I've received notice through our barn that yes, there is a trust fund set up and a Memorial Service at the April show.

Anything we can do to encourage this wonderful facility to continue bringing safe and fun eventing to our area will benefit all equestrians.

A great loss, a very well run facility; and I have a sad heart. Long Live Pine Hill Texas!

Update for Memorial Service, got the info since DD is in Pony Club and I'm helping at the event on Saturday.
                                Dear Pony Club Friends,

Rio Grande Region and the horse community lost a very special friend with the recent passing of Phil Sawin. A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at Pine Hill on Saturday April 9th at 6:30 pm following the USEA event. This celebration will be as only Phil would have wanted it—outdoors, at his beautiful place, surrounded by horses and horse people.

Pony Club has been asked to be a part of this celebration. Three speakers representing the multiple generations of Pony Club will share their special memories of Phil. Those planning to attend the memorial are invited to gather with the speakers in a show of support and unity. Pony Club will be the final speakers before a special sunset honoring of Phil.

In addition to our speakers, Ruth has made a special request of Pony Club. Phil was so fond of our members and many of you have your own personal or humorous memories of Phil. If you would, please take a few moments to write them down and email them to Julie Herman at: JulieWrayH@yahoo.com. Julie has agreed to compile our memories into a special memory book for Ruth and Ellie. Sharing our memories with Ruth will be a comfort to her and Ellie as well as a reminder of the many ways Phil touched our hearts. Please try to send your memories by Thursday, April 7.

Many of you have volunteered to assist with the USEA show Saturday. Please park at Pine Hill. Martin Farms is catering a light dinner (baked potato and salad bar) for show volunteers at 5:30. If you are only able to attend the celebration, parking has been arranged and will be directed to Martin Christmas Tree Farm. There is a “friendship gate” between the farms.

Pine Hill is Phil’s legacy; an Equestrian Facility of great beauty and uniqueness. A Memorial Trust fund has been set up to assist in maintaining this legacy. If you are interested, you may contribute in two ways:

                                • Send a check payable to: Rio Grande Region Pony Club, and mail to Eddie Mixon, Treasurer, 4616 Chiappero Trail, Austin , TX 78731 . These funds will be consolidated into a single check the region will send to the Phil Sawin Memorial Trust fund on your behalf. These donations are tax deductable since they are written to a 501(c)3 organization.

                                • Contribute directly to the Phil Sawin Memorial Trust Fund. By mail, send a check payable to “Phil Sawin Memorial Trust Fund” and mail to the Sterling Bank, Phil Sawin Memorial Trust Fund, 15000 Northwest Freeway, Houston , TX 77040 .

I’m looking forward to seeing you at Pine Hill on Saturday.

                                Sincerely,
                                Bethel Hart
