Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Anyone else have horse-related funny (or not) nightmares...

We have a schooling show this weekend. I had a dream last night that Right Horse somehow learned to stick his tongue out the side of the mouth, ruining our "show career." It was covered with hay and mints and I couldn't even keep the pink thing clean no matter what I tried. Keep in mind that we show for fun and he isn't in the running for any dynamic show career.

I can't help feeling like it's the old "naked in school" or "a final exam for a class I never knew I was in" nightmare-about being unprepared-I guess I will never feel 100% prepared for any show, but I didn't think I minded that...it's just where we are.

There are other less pleasant ones, but I know they are just worries about something happening to my boy, run of the mill ones. But the dirty protruding tongue thing?

LOL, night before last I was riding Sophie through the neighborhood where I grew up. Palisade/Fort Lee NJ, not exactly horse country. I saw 2 black goats just like Amanda, my favorite goat who died this summer. I dismounted and unsaddled Sophie and put the 2 goats up on her back, took the goats home, the house I grew up in, (not goat country either) then went back for the saddle, (my gorgeous County Connection) which was gone.
Then commenced the OMG how can I claim this on my insurance or even prove it was mine
    I wasn't always a Smurf
    Penmerryl's Sophie RIDSH
"I ain't as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was"
The ignore list is my friend. It takes 2 to argue.

Oh, I LOVE this one!! I love dreams where beloved pets come to visit! (Or their twins...). Yours is like one of those "full circle" dreams where your life experiences come together! So cool-then back to reality even in the dream with the now-disappeared saddle. (I hope the insurance claim works out )

      Cool dream.

I had a nightmare where I was trapped on a cruise ship and couldn't get off in time to get a taxi to get to a GM clinic. When I finally got off the ship, it was all muddy and I was going to be late and have muddy boots for the clinic. I woke up with my heart pounding and in a cold sweat!

I had a dream that someone cut my Haflinger's beautiful long mane and tail off to sell for violin bows. I couldn't get to the barn fast enough the next morning to check on him! His hair is my one vanity...I take better care of it than I do my own!

OMG, violin bows?!?! I do not have a Haflinger but I've grown my mare's mane out quite long. She looks so beautiful with it that way and I get so many compliments, I would be devastated if someone cut it.

Last week I had a dream that I was trail riding with my horse on a new trail and something happened and she spooked. I fell off and got knocked out and woke up on my back in a pile of leaves. My horse was gone and we couldn't find her anywhere. Searched the woods every day for TWO WEEKS and couldn't find her. Eventually I found her but it wasn't in the woods, I don't really know where it was, but she had huge tree branches sticking out of her mane. It was so scary and I woke up in a panic. My horse is totally bomb proof, she would never, ever run off and certainly would come when I called her, plus I always trail ride with at least one buddy.

                Too funny!!

I'm glad this thread popped up, I've been having dreams (or nightmares, I can't decide) where my late heart horse (Spooky) either never died or came back from the dead. It's nice to see him again even if its just a dream but it makes me terribly sad when I awake!! In my dreams he's his sassy, quirky self as if to be like "why haven't you been riding me lately?! Where are my treats??"

I used to have pre-show dreams too.. They use to involve a loose Spooky and sometimes dogs and giraffes on course..

I think it's a good thing you're dreaming! It means you're either really focused on your show or your subconscious is very intent on it. I took a dreams psychology course in college and our professor said "dreams are just the subconscious assessing/analyzing the events and courses of that day, they days prior, and days past".

I had a nightmare one night, where I was walking around a strange farm with Rico's halter in my hand calling for him and could not find him. People would tell me "he's down at the...." and I'd see him in the distance then he'd disappear. It was upsetting enough to make me get up at 2 AM (when I woke up) and go out to the barn to make sure he was OK. Thankfully, the barn is less than 100 yards from the back door.

Yes, I have frequent, recurring horse nightmares but they are almost almost always horribly tragic and disturbing.

I think what you have done is tapped into the collective equine unconscious and channeled my OTTB into your horse show dream. Every now and then I have to get out the pink tongue video, even though I get a live show nearly every day (you'd think my dreams would be more whimsical).

EXCELLENT points! There is more to the show story, not just me riding my horse, (I have more responsibilities than just my own horse), so I think you hit the nail on the head!!

Yes-I agree completely with you and your former professor! It's interesting- I actually solve a lot of problems on my dreams...I may think about something for a while, and if a good solution doesn't present itself, it usually will in my dreams. I think it's so cool!

Desi is quite the clown. He puts his tongue out when he is playing and when he is exceedingly happy. He never did it under saddle, but I no longer ride him due to his many physical, emotional and neurological issues (he is 12).

His primary occupation now is entertaining and mentoring my three-year-old, who hasn't quite learned the art of tongue wagging but did easily pick up hay net twirling.

Sounds like my dreams. The last one involved a tornado that decimated the barn and I found two of the horses dying inside the rubble and the other ones missing. There were no phones or power and the only vet in the area had to travel on horseback. Other dreams involve huge, gaping wounds, hooves severed from the limb, trailer crashes and the like.

I had one last night thanks to the thread on off course wanting jingles and titled horrible weekend, horrible week. Someone was trying to abuse my horse in a similar fashion as the OP's was treated and I started yelling in my sleep that I was going to deck them and bash their teeth in. My poor husband gave up and left the bed when I started throwing punches around.
What's wrong with you?? Your cheese done slid off its cracker?!?!

His primary occupation now is entertaining and mentoring my three-year-old, who hasn't quite learned the art of tongue wagging but did easily pick up hay net twirling.

These are AWESOME!! I can't see blanket cleaning because of some music copyright thing (?) but the others are GREAT!! Twirling lessons has to be one of my favorites...he knows exactly what he's doing and I love how he switches up the direction of the twirl!

They are so cute together, playing. It's adorable.

Thanks for sharing-I had some good laughs!! I was worried that Desi was going to lick the metal fence, however, and be stuck to it forever .

                                        Adorable. Please share more
