Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Which horse would you choose?UPDATED post #106

I'm looking for a new partner to ride, with the aim of riding in low level dressage, and have been pointed in the direction of these guys.

My initial shopping list included being 16hh or bigger, especially as I'm a larger rider, this guy hits a lot of my wants, and I do like him, he is big enough, looks like he is a sturdy sort of lad, he is very laid back, and I like the look of his canter.

    http://www.breederdirect.net/salepages/parker.html

but while I was browsing I saw the movement on this guy, and he is very tempting, *sigh* even though he is smaller than I first listed, and I would have to send him out to get 60 days put on him before I took him on, but with the price that is doable, and I do love his movement.

    http://www.breederdirect.net/salepages/bravo.html

Have a look, tell me who you like and why..

Personally, I prefer the chestnut. The other one has gorgeous coloring but he's small and has a lighter build. If you were looking for a bigger horse I think that Parker would fill out nicely.

If you want color did you look at Handyman? I think he's quite the looker and has a bit more substance.

Which of these two horse suits your needs as a rider better? Do you want a horse that a professional has to ride and that you may or may not feel comfortable on, given the horse's level of training? Do you think that the smaller of the two horses would be able to accommodate your weight/height? If not, go for the larger, sturdier horse. Fabulous movement is lovely if you plan to compete seriously, but as a rider do you have the skill set to be able to sit correctly and manage the more elaborate movement of the second horse, or will you flop all over the place on him? These are all question that you should probably ask yourself before you get your heart set on one horse. Think with your head first. If you are happy with the horse that you have chosen for objective reason, then you may further develop a wonderful relationship later on.
And this is the story of your red right ankle.

Happily color is at the bottom of my list, so we can discount any preferences there.

        Mare or gelding is OK.

Substance, yup, want that, so I need to try and keep that front and center.

I'm in a period of change here, selling some ornaments and pasture puffs so I can concentrate on having one nice competition horse to bring on, and my current two as projects to keep improving.

I did look at Handyman, and I kind of like him, even though a white face would not be my top choice, but his trot doesn't seem to go anywhere, he looks very up and down, am I being unfair to him?

I really prefer the look of the chestnut and if he embodies all of your wants then he is probably the best choice. But then until you try either of them it is purely speculation. Good luck.

Mr faceman (the sire of these horses) is a halter horse... Even in the APHA world we wouldnt usually mess with a halter bred horse for a pleasure (hunt seat) prospect.

Things to look out for on your visit...

Short choppy stride (straight up and down pasterns)
              Straight stifle angle
              Straight hind end angle
Lack of depth in the hock
              Small feet
Not able to cover ground at the trot
              Canter up and down behind

I have owned one halter bred horse to do dressage with and she topped out at 1st level as far as movement wise.

I showed western pleasure on a QH last month so this is not coming from a DQ trying to be down on the breed horse Im a HUGE fan of appendix and hunt seaters doing dressage... But Im not overly excited about the breeding on these guys on the one side.

If these horses were in your backyard, I'd go look BUT if they are any distance, get decent video & conformation shots first!

Parker - as he's u/s, ask for walk, trot & canter, both directions, transitions, also horse walking towards the camera, horse walking away from camera & decent conformation shots (horse standing square & level).

Parker is 6 1/2, he's not likely to grow taller, though he will build topline - you stated 16hh or bigger so I think you should remove all these horses from your list.
In this market, 4K can get you more than an almost 7yr old horse that is barely started.

ETA have you looked at the results of the Alberta Fall Classic Breeders Sale - usually there are a number of horses that don't sell/are withdrawn etc & you might try contacting various owners that had horses listed.

Thanks for all the input, I am trying for once to be focused about what I want, so I have to keep sanity checking myself.

The thing I like about these horses is the warmblood side of the equation, and I'm hearing some good feedback about theor program.

AGHHHH, I am the worlds worst person when shopping for horses, I get swayed by ads like this:

2008 16.2+hh draft cross gelding. This boy is well handled, quiet and friendly. He blankets, x ties, baths, and is not herd bound! He is easy to catch. Very willing with new things. I have no time. Price leave you room to get a good 30 days put on him and come out with a great horse! Will go into any ring, I got him with an idea for hunter/jumper. Make him what you want. $1000

Great, nice price, doesn't look bad in his pic, only half an hour from here, but do I really want a draft cross as much as I love them.

I've had pics and videos of a $6 500 Spanish Norman that didn't even start to float my boat.

                    I would LOVE this guy

                    http://equineexchange.net/forum/view...hp?f=24&t=1392

Big beautiful, what's not to like, apart from the price of an unstarted 9 year old grade gelding

Mmmmmm maybe I should give up and just buy a ranch horse, so many good looking QH's for sale, seemingly dead broke, stocky weight carriers for really fair money available around here at the moment.

16 hh + English prospects not so many, I am one of a rare breed around here.

                    Alto, no pm yet

Where are you at? I found a TON of horses when we were looking in your price range

I know of a gelding that is free huge a warmblood and trained through 2nd but has some sort or maintanance twice a year and its a buyers market.

                          Again ITS a buyers market!

I live in the middle of nowhere, right next door to the arse end of anywhere.

Silvia, nice horse, but over a 1000 miles away, the trouble with, and the beauty of Canada is it's size, so if I look at horses in BC, in reality then I could look as far south as Texas and the distance would be the same.......

Naomi, going to look at your list....We are in Saskatchewan, not far from Regina.

I like the first one. Tell them about your budget and how you'd need money for training if you like her

I am always very honest up front and let a seller know that before I come I'd need to know if the price was flexible because of hauling/training or what not.

Some owners are ready to sell and will tell you right off the bat that they will reduce for a certain amount

What is your comfort level as a rider/trainer? That would help us help you. Are you confident working with most very green horses (i.e. with 60 days)? Do you require a bomb proof partner? Or are you okay with something hotter/spookier?

Looking at lots of young unstarted/lightly started prospects is cool for finding a bargain, but its no bargain if you have to pay for tons of training and still end up w/ a horse you aren't comfortable on.

The first chestnut does have a nicely balanced canter. He also looks comfortable and loose in his body--indications of the calm mind the sellers claim he has. Trot is plain, but I bet it could be improved. If mind is top for you, he'd be worth a look.

My comfort level/confidence level is variable, I love riding my little Arab, she is all snort and blow and 'lookee' and generally is wanting to travel one pace faster than I want to. I bought her last year as a 17 year old, and she had not been ridden in 12 years, and I just have a blast riding her. I trust her, I know what she will do in most circumstances, an all around sweetheart.

I have more worries on my appy, who is more solid all around, but we have never 'clicked' if anyone understands what I mean.

Look truth is I would love a push button, 100% broke, totally reliable schoolmaster, but I know at my budget I have to make compromises, so it will have to come, probably, by buying a youngster. I don't want to have to deal with health issues, so young it will probably be.
