Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Who Has the Best Cell Phone Range (Least Dead Spots)?

    I do have a cell phone, just a Tracfone for road emergencies, but I don't get a signal until several miles from home. Most people have had trouble with their cell phones out here. I live in the boonies, as in folks don't come this far to get lost. (I was told by the DirecTV installer that I'm even in a dead satellite spot, taking 2 satellite dishes to get all my channels, something he says occurs about in only 3% of the country.) On the other hand, there have been one or two people over the last 10 years who happened to be on the farm and got a call. Stunned me, because 99% of folks can't. I wish in retrospect I'd asked them who they phoned with.

    I'm thinking of switching, just for safety reasons. Really wish I could have a reliable cell phone to take out solo horsing and choring with me on the farm.

    So who has the fewest dead spots? Whose phone is the most likely to work in the areas where practically nobody's phone works?

    And will phone companies let you take one out on trial, as in if it doesn't work on my farm, I bring it back for full refund of all charges?

    In general, that would be Verizon.

    But talk to the peeps in your actual neck of the woods to get advice specific to your area.

    Also, cellies are a "line of sight" technology, so hills screw up even the best-laid plans of a network.

    IIRC, Verizon will let you cancel plans and return equipment within a time limit-- 2 weeks?

    But be sure to ask in very specific terms. Verizon stores come in better and worse varieties. If you don't dig the customer service at the first store you try, definitely visit another if you can.

      I use T Mobile and have been MORE than pleased with it's coverage. While driving from Kansas to NC and back along 1-70 and 1-64 I almost always had coverage. One spot in KY and in the mountains of the WV turnpike left me bare but otherwise just fine. This was in mid-December.

      A few weeks later made nearly the same run except once in WV I went north on 64 into VA, over to the pennisula, then down to central SC and winded my way back west through GA, TN & IL. Again, had excellent coverage to include the internet on my blackberry. Around home it works just fine too and we live rural.

        I have T-Mobile because roaming is free.

        That was important to me because I work in two different areas from where I live, service & tower wise, and the times I RELY on my phone the most is when travelling with the trailer--all over the map coverage wise.

        I think you probably have to do the coverage maps for each place and see if there is any.

        I SEE an AT&T tower from my livingroom, I'm almost under the umbrella for it--that's who my internet is with. But their phone plans were SO not compatible with my formerly-tracfone budget, nor was their coverage great in one work area. So I got T-Mobile, and use the AT&T Tower at home.

        I would google "cell phone service (andDT'slocation) and then check coverage maps... THEN compare roaming fees.

          Check coverage maps and talk with your neighbors. Where we live, AT and T and Verizon are best. A few miles from here, there are pockets where neither one has good service. There is even some variation depending on which phone you select.

            Where I live, AT&T is best, but back in Baltimore it was terrible out in the "boonies", Verizon was better. Sometimes it depends on the phone itself, not just the service. My husband gets much better reception than I on his Blackberry.

              Great point--how old is your Tracfone?

              When I got my new phone, which is pretty low end Motorola W490 (few bells/whistles/no internet etc.) the coverage was SOOOO much better.

              Come to find out my old phone (3 or 4 years?) was analog. All the towers are now digital around me. Which meant a LOT of missed calls!

              The phone really does matter a lot.

                TOO funny, SLW - our experience is exactly the same. In the rural midwest, T-Mobile has the best coverge.

                And for the OP: like Tracfone, T-Mobile lets you just pre-load a set amount of $, no monthly plans/fees. And so long as you load a little more $ before the first minutes expire, they all just kick forward into the next time period.

                  I'm five miles from the biggest town in my county. The service for the Tracfone I have now is so-so. There are small pockets of dead zones -- I can have three or four bars in one spot, then five feet away, no service, then another five feet and three or four bars again.

                  I have the "no service" tone indicator on so it beeps every time it loses reception. I can sit at one end of my kitchen table and it beeps constantly. At the other end of the table, it's fine. At my computer, sometimes there's enough reception to make/recieve a call; sometimes not.

                  But it's an improvement over the more primitiveTracfone I had previously -- it's dead zones were bigger and more numerous. However, I think that might have been an atenna problem rather than a reception problem. After the little twist-in antenna came untwisted and got lost somewhere, I used some Yankee Ingenuity and cut a short piece of electrical cord, stripped 1/2" of the end, and twisted that into the antenna hole, my reception was much better than it had been with the orginal antenna.

                    Verizon....and you can also ad an antenna booster (they are cheap - $15-20) - that helps considerably when you only have 1-2 bars :-)

                      Nobody here could possibly answer that question for you. Coverage is completely dependent on where you are in the country, the lay of your property, etc. I know people with AT&T on the east coast that love it and never get a dropped call, but here on the west coast, the service is absolutely terrible. What works on your rural farm may not get a single bar on someone else's.

                      You need to look at coverage maps (you can input your actual address into them) for the various cell phone providers to see how coverage will be in your area.

                        I echo everyone who says it depends on your particular area.

                        When we first moved here, it was a cell phone dead zone. I talked to all my neighbors, and it helped me rule out which carrier NOT to use. Then I talked to my postmaster (love small towns, the postmaster knows everything!) and he told me Verizon was putting in a tower. Bingo--went with Verizon and the coverage has gotten so good that I actually gave up my landline.
                        Life would be infinitely better if pinatas suddenly appeared throughout the day.

                          Thanks. Asking the Postmaster is a great idea; I'll do that.

                          My street is not listed on T-mobile, not even on the tightest street level coverage. (You know you live in the boonies when . . .) Ballparking it from nearest identified streets, I think I'm in a dead zone, although there is one oasis of "fair" in the middle of a large dead spot.

                          Verizon from their map swears that they give digital coverage. Might go talk to them, but I want a working demonstration from my farm before I believe. Verizon at least knew where I was.

                            We used to have great service on internet, dish and cell phone until our lovely county board put us next to a large wind farm. Now? Not so much! The coverage is terrible!

                              I had T mobile for 3 years and was mostly happy with the service.... until I actually had a problem. I upgraded to a new phone, wich was supposed to be wi-fi capable (working off my internet router) and found out the hard way that all phones don't work this way for calls, just for texting and internet use. The reps were very rude and acted like I should know this (my old phone worked great with the wi-fi). I don't work in a cell phone store! So I switched to Boost (like Nextel but pre paid) and so far I love it. I have the $50/month unlimited plan. It gets service in lots more places than my T-mobile phone and I don't have to watch my minutes. You should talk to people in your area and do your research online. There are some really great sites for checking out different phones and services. Good Luck!!!

                                Verizon. On vacation this summer on Victoria Island/Vancouver and WA state, always had bars, even on Mt.Rainer. Was told Verizon was the only service that worked on the mountain. Very happy with their service.

                                  I had Verizon and HATED it - couldn't wait for the 2 year contract to be up so I could change service providers without a HUGE penalty. Either dropped calls or no service. Absolutely did not work at my house. Just about everyone else I know has Verizon and loves it. I now have AT&T and have very few areas where there is no service - and they're usually in the mountains with no line of sight. As soon as I have line of sight again I'm back in business.

                                  I tried Sprint and found that it only works in major cities and major airports. It didn't work anywhere near where I live. I should have been suspicious when I got the Verizon phone and had to use the land line to do the start-up process. They refunded the price of the phone, but KEPT the start-up charge - even though the phone was basically useless.

                                    I had Verizon for 9 years and loved it! Always had great customer service and the cell service was always good. Until we bought our farm and the only service that consistently works here is AT&T so we switched.

                                    I will say that when I called Verizon about how bad my service was they sent a technician out to verify the level of service and then after minimal hassle allowed me to break my contract with no fee.

                                    So it does completely depend on your area

                                        I loved AT&T and had it when I lived in TX, but when I moved to MI, it didn't work well at all (in 03). It's better now, but still nothing compared to Verizon when it comes to coverage.

                                        I travel back and forth from MI to IA to WY (all along I80) and it works there. As well as up in Northern MI and out in the boonies.

                                        But it really just depends.

                                        Cool thing about Verizon (at least for us at work) was that they let us try their phones for service. We have several employees that seriously live out in the sticks and needed good cell coverage for work. Verizon worked. ATT did not.
                                        A good horseman doesn't have to tell anyone...the horse already knows.

                                        Might be a reason, never an excuse...
