Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    Ok So I have boarded my horse Cowboy for 6 years, and I always seemed to pay quite a bit in board for not alot of service. I was paying $250.00 for just a 12x24 pipe stall with no shelter and no tack storage. It did cover hay.

    January last year me and my bf bought a horse property. I have a 4 stall pipe breezeway barn. the stalls are 12x24 fully covered, I have one set of cross ties in the aisle. A small but workable arena/turnout. I was asking $325.00 which would cover hay (which even the cheapest hay is $10.00 a bale), and the stall and bedding, and stall cleaning of course. I was also offering to put on and take of fly masks & feed suppliments (provided by owner) at no extra charge. I am offering private tack sheds. we also have a wash rack, and are within riding distance 2 TWO beautiful public arenas and 200 acres of protected wash, and miles of mountain trails.

    I got a few calls and people seemed shock at the price? If I charge any less I will not make any money. I am not looking to get rich, I am just looking to help offset the costs of my 3 horses. We are in LA, board isent cheap, and my prices to me seem on the cheaper side?

    So I was wonding what other Socal people (preferable closer to LA) are paying and getting for it. Do you think my prices are unreasonable? I have studied and researched boarding for year. When I was teenager my dream was to open a boarding stable, and do training. But I feel for the services I offer, thats it is a more than fair price, and if feel if I cant atleast get that for my stalls, its not worth it.

    Your rates don't sound unreasonable to me, but I am from a very different part of the country.

    Could you call other boarding stables for rates and services, or look at their websites? That way you have an idea of what is being charged and offered.

    It sounds like you have a nice place. I'm used to far more turn out, but I know that pretty impossible to come by in your area. Good luck filling your spots.

    Another note- where are you advertising? Try to advertise in the areas frequented by your target clients. Or have open houses and clinics if you can convince a trainer to do a day clinic. That may increase interest in your barn!

      For your area that sounds very reasonable. I would hold out and if time keeps going by without boarders then adjust your prices.

        In Los Angeles that is shockingly cheap, particularly given that you are not charging extra for turnout and feeding supplements.

        The biggest issue for you may be that people want more riding facilities, or access to a trainer.

        But still, hold your ground. Anyone who thinks that is too high for horse board in LA is probably going to be a PITA boarder anyway. The right boarders will come along.

        I would try advertising in the Horsetrader, if you haven't already, or putting up flyers at local tack shops.

          That's very cheap. My only concern would be the smallish arena, but if can ride from your barn to a larger arena (Hansen Dam by any chance?) I don't think it would be a problem.

          If anything, you're probably on the cheap side.

            Assumming you're in LA county somewhere, it depends where. I'm in Lakewood/Long Beach and pay $425 for a 12x24 pipe corral that is half covered. Hay twice a day is included as is cleaning and bedding. I have a secure tack locker in a secure building. Stalls are cleaned daily. We have a lighted jump area to ride in at night, 6 turn out pens, full dressage court, 7 other various size arenas, 3 wash areas and access to some trails along the riverbed/drainage channel. Barn manager and staff live on the premises. It's not pretty or fancy or particularly well maintained, but the footing's good enough, the hay is good quality and I like the management.

            I pay the barn staff extra to feed supplements and blanket. I pay a kid, well she was a kid when we started now she's in college, to turn my horse out on days I don't make it to the barn. Also pay $75/mo to store my trailer.

            All that said, it's conveniently located for me on the way home from work. There is pretty much always someone there (safety) and they go the extra mile to take care of my horse.

            While the $325 sounds reasonable, even a deal, it's hard to compare without knowing your actual location. You could be at the end of a dirt road that requires 4WD to get to in the rain. If you don't have lights, it will be hard to attract those of us with day jobs. We had 5 horses in the lighted arena last night.

            I think I'm getting a screaming deal at $425 compared to LAEC, but there is always someone complaining that they are being overcharged. It's an expensive hobby, especially in So. Cal. Not everyone seems to have figured that part out.

            I agree that advertising in the HorseTrader is a good idea. Also, put up flyers at feed stores.

              Sounds reasonable to me, i'm in OC and pay just over $500 which doesn't include bedding. That's for a 12x24 that is 1/2 covered, I had to add another roof myself to completely cover it. But, I am at a large center that has other amenities. Bide your time, advertise where you can, and boarders will come. If you hang flyers at local tack/feed stores be sure to include photos to show just how large your ring is, stalls look, ect. That might generate more interest.

                I am located in Shadowhills, on one of the main street that run threw the town. No 4x4 needed lol

                Wonders12, yes there is the Hansen Dam arena, but a few years ago they put in another very nice arena at Stonehurst park. Which is just a few streets down from my property. So that one is extremely close.

                Thank you everyone for the input! Originally we only advertised in the local newsletter. My bf mom said we should get boarders ASAP, and just put the ad out. That was about a year ago. So this time I will make a flyer myself with pictures and im putting on the flyer the price, so they know what im charging

                  Do the same 'research' as to prices, facilities, services, etc. that you'll expect prospective BOARDERS to do. Then you'll KNOW.

                      If none, you're too high.

                      If you filled up in a morning, you were too low.

                      The market generally answers this problem.

                        I would add personalized care " to the ads; what is your turnout situation? how do prices compare in your area?This may be quite regional; around here people look for 24/ 7 riding ; i,e, indoor or lights and all- weather footing outside
