Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I think in Northern VA we are over 18" at this point.

I put mine out for a bit, then they complained and are back in. They will probably get another couple hrs this evening for me to clean up. My biggest issue is the wind and the drifts--it was piled up about 3' against the barn door, and when it blew in the matted aisle got really slick.

Happy that I still have power--it seems like this should be wrapping up in the next few hrs and that at least is a relief.

We're in Carroll County, MD and have about 15" now, but it could be more because it's light fluffy stuff, and the wind is blowing it around, so could've blown an inch or two off.

I put the horses out at lunchtime to muck and refill hay nets. My black App was NOT impressed with my decision, but the others hopped around a bit and tried to dig for grass. 10 minutes later they all came in with about an inch of snow on their backs! Had to brush em off so it didn't melt into them.

suburbs of DC here- Olney, MD. We easily have a foot and a half and probably more. The worst is when it starts blowing a bit.

The Sled Dog Samoyed puppy and border collie/aussie cross are loving it! The snow is deep enough now that they mostly hop instead of run .

asterix- I'm sure the ponies are fine! I would love a pasture cam but more for entertainment than to make sure they're ok . My guess is that they are just sitting in the woods at the hay eating away.

I have a 4wd Explorer with great tires, but once it gets really deep even that has clearance issues. I just hope we get some kind of plowing in the next couple of days. The last time we had a storm this bad, we got the truck out of our street but it did get stuck around a turn. We ended up parking it at the school behind our house where it had to stay for several days until we got plowed.

Mine have the option of coming under the overhangs. Horses on the side protected from the wind stood under the overhangs all day(of course, that's where their hay is,too!!)

The horses on the windy side chose to stand by the treeline when they weren't eating hay. They didn't look too miserable(at least not as much as me!!). I have some haynets up in their stalls and some under the overhangs. My gelding is eating the hay under the overhangs on the windy side while all the rest are in their stalls eating hay.

I think the horses manage this weather much better than we do.

Weather guys said it would lighten up around 3 pm, but it's still snowing hard.

So far today: I got the tractor stuck in a ditch trying to plow a path on the 1/2 mile long driveway. Luckily the F250 pulled it out.

I've picked snowballs out of horse feet 6 times already. Pam Cooking spray does not work very well.

I realized I should have bought those Carhart (insulated) overalls.

And, I think I sprained my lower back after laying on the top bales of hay in my "hay garage" and pushing as hard as I could with my legs to push the snow off the roof.

I have to keep telling myself that!

I went out last night and filled up their big heated trough and filled up 2 big hay bags, 1 muck bucket full of hay, and 2 hay racks in the run in shed with hay. I also put their heavy weights with full necks on since they usually choose not to go in their shed.

I had a feeling I wasn't going to be able to get out to the barn today. I feel badly that they didn't get their grain (although they only get half a scoop and are only fed once a day) but it won't do them any good if I get into a car accident and die.. so I'm staying put!

must keep telling myself that they are horses and they'll be fine.

We are just waiting for the inevitable here in MA. Supposed to be getting 12"-18". Boys are boarded for the winter, and although I hate lugging buckets through snow, I love schlepping out to check them during big storms. Probably wouldn't be saying that if they were home...

We're getting hit in New York City right now. Snow blowing sideways, 21 degrees. I think the last I heard was around 12" expected... UGH! Sure is pretty though. My new Meezers were looking out the window - aww - it's their first snow!
She wasn't running away with me, I just couldn't stop her!

i think we have about 20" here. Just about to bring our 'boys' in for the night. They look so miserable, icicles hanging off them and their blankets - 2 each - a winter blanket covered by a gortex sheet - the best waterproof blankets around. They will be very happy to come in. Can't imagine riding in this weather, especially bareback....CIAO!

I didn't measure- I'm sure it's close to 12", but it's NOT windy. For that- I'm thankful. Horses chose to stay out and play all day vs. be in the run-in shed. The new puppy is enjoying this amazing white stuff and it's actually breathed life into the old dog as well. What a great day! I feel for everybody struggling in this storm...

Well this is my first Atlantic snow storm. It was fun until we got in the gator to feed everyone with snow pelting us. We loaded the run-ins with hay. I turned my yearling out for a couple hours and trudged out there to bring him in and he was MAD, not happy that he had to come in.
I think we have around 16-17" in Chestertown, expecting around 20. Everything is closed, glad I did my grocery shopping Thurs. I told the ponies' owner we're ready for Aiken!

In western Prince William County, at the base of the Bull Run Mountains. Really hard to say how much we've gotten so far -- so windy, it was snowing sideways most of the day and drifts are 3' deep. Taking care of 10 horses in a blizzard requires 3 things: a strong back, warm boots and a sense of humor. I don't have a sled, but I used an empty Rubbermaid container to get a bale of hay out to my two field boarded guys.

I feel so guilty for mine!! They live out and I haven't seen them since Thurs, when the forecast was quite different. They're only in their medium weight blankets! Do you guys blanket by air temp or by wind chill? I'm always so torn!

My cats have been having a ball. All now indoor kitties but that doesn't stop them from wanting out! I granted the former barn kitty his wish and he was NOT pleased.

Mine has been in a heavy Rambo with a Baker sheet underneath since earlier this week. I'm hoping the BO changed her into her heavy with the extended neck if she was out at all in this. (She has a stall.) I take into consideration the wind chill, but it's not really up to me unless I'm there - didn't make it out today!

Love your Butterball. Looks like he got some exercise today! I have a couple of "butterballs" who could use some exercise themselves! LOL. Cute video! My 2 new Meezer kittens saw their first snow today - but only though the windowpane in my bedroom! Ah.....winter.....

24" here in Catharpin and still coming down.

I keep mine out in storms this big due to roof load concerns. Though my barn/arena is a Morton and well-suited, you never know.

All have sheds, free water close. I do not grain in this kind of weather, but throw hay every 3 hrs. to keep their furnaces going. I don't blanket as they hunker down in sheds and are not clipped.

I've been through several of these over the years and I find that preparation is the key. So we spent the day yesterday prepping to make today as efficient as possible.

Hope the sun shines tomorrow so I can start digging out. Some of the drifts against my house are over 4 feet and I can barely get out of my door.

Watching my dog in this has been a blast though. She's loving tunneling through it.

Lexington, VA We think about 22 inches, with drifts well over three feet. No electricity from 3am last night until almost 3pm this afternoon. Worse thing about that is not having water for the horses - well pump doesn't work without electricity, and we don't have a generator. I had filled extra buckets just in case last night, so all went fine. The four horses are fine in their stalls in blankies - probably will turn them out for a bit tomorrow and pray that Willie doesn't hurt himself!! Haven't seen one of my little old barn kitties, so I am afraid that I have lost her. Gumby (Corgi) is very confused- can't see over the paths we made through the snow to the barn - I think he feels like I do when driving in the construction lanes with the high concrete barriers Other barn kitty is snug on the couch. DH is doing his best with our tractor - doesn't have a blade, just a bucket, but he is working at clearing our 1/2 mile driveway to the main road.
Tomorrow is another day- hope everyone else in this is making out ok.
