Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

But that is a great idea!! I'll have to try to dig out an old sled, if we have one... if not, I'll be purchasing one next time we go to the store. Thanks for the tip!!

I am just delighted the power is still on.

After trashing the phone lines with a bulldozer last week, I am even happier that my phone guy got it fixed just before I got socked in.

So, maybe two inches of snow (central NC, an hour south of the VA border) ... then covered with an all night rain slush sleet mess with wind gusts up to 30 mph.

South of DC about 50 miles. Snow up the ying-yang for VA. It's still coming down and has gotten pretty windy. The JRT won't even leave the porch mat because the snow is over his head! Of course, that's only the 2 minutes or so he's not on the couch wrapped in a blankie.

Here in South Central PA we're getting a LOT of snow. Right now there's about 8 in. but it's really drifting. Predicted amounts of over a foot. I had to dig a large drift out before I could get into the barn. My 2 horsies have a small paddock to play in (just to get their jollies out) then will be going back in. Did the bread and milk run yesterday!

My biggest concern is my daughter (a nurse) who has to work from 3 pm to around midnight. And her husband (a police officer) who works the midnight shift tonight. They have 3 boys under 11 y.o. who I was supposed to babysit this evening from around 9 - midnight (their farm is about 6 mi away). I don't know how this is going to work! Just recently retired from a career in teaching, I was quite spoiled in that when the weather was bad, we had snow days. My daughter and her husband have to go to work no matter what the roads are like - God bless them and people like them who have jobs they have to get to!

                We Are

Halfway between Richmond and Charlottesville VA at the end of a mile long private road on a ridge above the James River....it is 25 degrees, gusting winds out of the north, with 12 inches at 6:00 am.....EXPECTING 18 TO 24 INCHES

The only one excited is my 12 year old little girl, who is waiting to blast out of here on her new John Deere Gator 4X4......

                Horses are fine........

I feel for all of you... We are sunny and crisp here in Colorado - my first thought when I started reading was that you guys all might have a white Christmas! Sounds like you will more likely have a wet muddy christmas...

I can't figure out my problem with snow - I curse it for the most part when it's happening, and miss it when I read someone else is getting it and we aren't. Must be because I spent most of my life w/o it. Anyway - stay warm, sled when possible, definitely ride it in, enjoy it. Driving at night when it's snowing - definitely on my list of least favorite things to do!

Yeah, for some reason every year I think I'll actually be able to stay on the entire ride down. And I also seem to forget how far I fly off and how much it hurts when I do.

f4leggin...I hope we have a white Christmas. But now the extended weather report says Christmas day it will warm up and rain. Blech, that should be a mess!

We're about an hour south of Charlottesville - 11 inches when I fed at 7 but its been snowing hard ever since so I am sure we are pushing the 12-14" mark.

Barn cat looked out the door when I opened it this morning and said no thanks, and turn around and went back into the hay room to curl up and stay warm!

                      Roanoke had 16" this morning.

Here in southern NJ, one FOOT already and snowing hard - if this keeps up until 6 am tomorrow we are going to be good and buried!

Thankfully my big 4x4 truck makes getting around easy. And I don't plow - I just drive my truck up and down and all around I want paths, LOL.

We're in between Richmond and Charlottesville and have around 18-20". Still have power so that's awesome, sure hope it lasts. We have a portable generator but will have no water if power goes, I have two bathtubs and a bunch of buckets/pitchers/containers filled just in case.

I left my horses in this AM, was going to let them out but it was hard for me to walk in the snow, I was too scared of getting hurt leading fresh horses out. Hopefully hubby will get on the tractor soon and clear me a path from barn to both paddocks, right now they're in munching hay.

I had a harrowing drive home from work last night, accidents everywhere and my 4wd jeep slid around on me quite a bit... very scary. I was so thankful to make it home that I kissed the jeep when I got here! Our neighbor is a tow truck driver and we called him earlier, he's been out since 5PM last night without a break.

So glad I moved to Kentucky from Maryland. Four on the ground here, eight expected (that's inches). Which you have to realize, will shut us down. Lexington only has 36 snow plows, TOTAL.

I hope all of you in the path of the storm keep your electricity. That is the worst part of storms. No water for man or beast, and no flushing toilets. We have 2 gas only fireplaces in the house so we'll never be freezing again, at least.

My DD in Vienna, VA is about buried, and it's not letting up. I understand a lot of VA is closed until further notice!

Over 12 inches - we are knee deep in snow in most places! Turned the ponies out in their turnout blankets to romp around and play for a while in the snow! We are in SW Virginia near Roanoke!

It's coming down really hard right now; last time I measured the snow we had 8" but if it keeps up this intensity that will easily increase. The wind is picking up, too. The plows can't keep the road clear at all; it's amazing the amount of people who are out driving ib this mess. I can't get to the barn to help, but my dogs are loving this snowfall; so am I, come to think of it.
The horse I bet on was so slow, the jockey kept a diary of the trip.

South Jersey-we're forecast to get anywhere between 12-20" of snow. We have more people on the road than I would have expected, but it seems to be quieting down now.

I don't think my dogs are loving the snow too much- short legged corgis have a tough time getting through all this white stuff!!

I'm in DC proper, snow is quite impressive -- I'd estimate about 20" and still coming. Dog is in 7th heaven, bounding around like a nut (he's a hound/lab cross and powers his way around).

I am hoping the ponies are just fine -- they live out 24/7, are fuzzy. They have a shed, a HUGE round bale, and the excellent BO lives on the property and will go tractor them some more if need be. I assume they will just sort themselves out -- the drive out is more than even I would want to take on right now. I have 4wd but can only imagine the idiocy of my fellow residents...

first car I saw this morning (this was a foot of snow ago): DC cop car, sliding down the street, a tiny little window of his windshield cleared (NOT the side windows, NOT the rear window. it was like a snow tank).
Mr asterix saw a police car hit a parked car. Guys at the precinct over by the dog park are basically hanging out on the front steps pushing all the cars that get stuck in front of the station...

The ponies are fine, right? I wish I had a pasture-cam.
