Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • What is your plan for stray dogs that find your farm - new video post 27

Ugh. Another one came upon the farm today.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlTdeOPMRz8

I need to develop some kind of plan for this now that this is dog #3 in the last several months. I was lucky to find a home for the last stray Boxer I found.

I called the vet and they said that the no kills keep them only until the run out of space then send to a kill shelter.

We already have 3 dogs and don't need another, but I'm on the project alone as my hubby will take in all of them!

BTW - he's located in central NC if anyone wants this adorable-ness. Oh and he's a pup - probably about 6 months old.

ETA: does anyone have a short term doggie rescue set up in a part of the house? My barn would be OK for warmer weather, but it's too cold at night now.

    Wow, he is FREAKING ADORABLE!

Post him on the giveaways here...I'm sure someone will grab him up quickly!

Stray doggies are not common around here, but I always have some portion of my house partitioned off for random cats. Usually it's the upstairs bathroom, but this summer the upstairs bathroom was already filled with a little female stray when I caught a litter of kittens. The kittens went into my living room (Eh, needed a new couch anyway!) and then when I caught their momma, she went into the spare bedroom. My SO simply does not understand how my house can always be full of rescued cats....but what, I'm just supposed to leave them there??

Thankfully none of my rooms have been filled since this summer. (KNOCK ON WOOD for no new arrivals!!) But I picked up a dog in my Jeep the other day on the way to the grocery store, and as I was driving around trying to find a house to knock at, I was planning on where to put him.....decided on partitioning off my kitchen and leaving him in there, and closing the door to the hallway that leads to it and keeping my 3 perma-residents to have the rest of the house.

That pup is adorable! You shouldn't have too much trouble finding someone to take him. I have to avoid all strays since I am currently at my limit....6 dogs and 2 cats.

        Posted on giveaways and bump.

I'm going to take him into the vet tomorrow to see if he's microchipped. He'll make a good barn dog. He loves hanging around the horses, but isn't obnoxious with them.

          Cute Doggie!

My DH has gotten used to seeing new faces, canine, equine, occasionally feline.

I had some nice big kennels built on to the end of the barn for the strays that dropped in and ended up staying. They've got nice straw filled doghouses and 50 x 12 runs. Happy bunch. They are all well mannered around the horses and barn cats and stay on the farm when I turn them out for exercise.

Just the other day I passed an emaciated one hobbling along on sore feet...I stopped and opened the truck door and she was overjoyed to have me pick her up and put her in. I shouldn't have come home from Tractor Supply on the back roads. Left behind by hunters probably.
I had room in one of the kennel runs so I'm fattening her up, will get her spayed and hopefully find her a home.
She's young and friendly, the color of a yellow lab, but definitely houndy. DH just shakes his head.

            OHHHH HOW ADORABLE!!!!!!!!!

I am a confessed foster mom FAILURE!!! So, like your hubbie, they would probably all stay, unless they were just lost, not abandoned. I don't have my own place yet, so it's not a problem, yet!

Serigraph - I work with a rescue in the Piedmont area. We might be able to help. PM me if interested.

With that said - this one looks like he/she is someone's pet. Well feed, socialized, looking to make non-threatening eye contact etc. The NC 'stray time-table' is seven days. In other words, someone has a week to claim his/her dog.

                  SUPER cute though....

                    In_ sending you a PM

BTW-while I'm waiting for my giveaway post to be approved, this dog will make someone a wonderful dog (if he's not claimed).

He's inside for the night in a crate and has been as quiet as a mouse. Just settled right in. Goes outside to do his business, comes when you call him. A real sweetheart.

I'm a stray dog magnet. On a first name basis with several of the folks that work at animal control.

The last stray that appeared did belong to a neighbor, all I did was put her in a crate in the garage and send out the APB emails. Her owner came the next morning.

If that fails, then sadly I have to call animal control. Now, they tell me that every dog I have called them on did get adopted and not euthanized, so I guess that is a good thing.

                      Good luck!

I can't believe I'm asking, but where in central NC? And if you're on FB, let me know b/c I'm in central NC (and have tons of local friends who might need a new barn/house/farm doggie and I'd gladly pass the word.

*says to self-I do NOT need a doggie. I do NOT need a doggie. I do NOT need a doggie. I do NOT need a doggie. I do NOT need a doggie........*

I have only had it happen once. Pit bull puppy was tied to the front of my house, complete with water dish and collar and leash with hearts on them.

I took her to the local animal shelter. When they heard she was abandoned at my place they waived the drop off fee. She was adopted two days later.

My trainer/barn owner has nine dogs that were all strays. The latest is a senior blind fella she found out in her xcountry field that she cannot believe survived the bitter cold, coyotes and feral pigs. I knew the old guy was a keeper once she named him (Pinball) and the vet came out to check him over and give him his vaccines.

She is the person who will always stop her car for a loose or stray dog. She will tromp through her woods all night if she's seen a stray dog.

Too bad you're so far away, I've kind of been hoping a stray would show up at our place... The rescue here won't approve of outdoor farm dog homes and we could use another big guy.

I live out in Spotsylvania, Va., and there are so many strays. It breaks my heart to see this one in particular. She just had puppies so now there are 2 more (adorable by the way) strays to add to the population. The mom like so many others are former hunting dogs that have been disowned and left to fend for themselves. We stop by the one area where the mom and puppies stay and feed them twice a day. They of course, won't let us anywhere near them. The cleared area where they stay most of the time looks like hell on earth! There are animal carcass all around. Looks like hunters have left the remains of deer. But there are other unknown animal parts. I have 3 dogs of my own and really can't take anymore but would like to try and help these creatures out. Any thoughts or suggestions??
