Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. Youre responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the Forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading itdetails of personal disputes may be better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts, though are not legally obligated to do so, regardless of content.

Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting. Moderators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts unless they have been alerted and have determined that a post, thread or user has violated the Forums policies. Moderators do not regularly independently monitor the Forums for such violations.

Profanity, outright vulgarity, blatant personal insults or otherwise inappropriate statements will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Users may provide their positive or negative experiences with or opinions of companies, products, individuals, etc.; however, accounts involving allegations of criminal behavior against named individuals or companies MUST be first-hand accounts and may NOT be made anonymously.

If a situation has been reported upon by a reputable news source or addressed by law enforcement or the legal system it is open for discussion, but if an individual wants to make their own claims of criminal behavior against a named party in the course of that discussion, they too must identify themselves by first and last name and the account must be first-person.

Criminal allegations that do not satisfy these requirements, when brought to our attention, may be removed pending satisfaction of these criteria, and we reserve the right to err on the side of caution when making these determinations.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While its understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and its related to a horse for sale, regardless of whos selling it, it doesnt belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be bumped excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the alert button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your Ignore list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary youd rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a users membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • (Shhhhh, don't tell my husband.) Bacon says MERRY CHRISTMAS!

    Promise? No, really, pinky swear.

I left the barn, turned onto the highway and turned right around again because sitting on the side of the intersection there was this.

I cannot keep it but there was no way I could leave it on the side on the country highway. The only shelter in the area that wouldn't have put him down immediately was closed today, of course. So here he sits on my screen porch, mugging for affection and nosing at some food.

His (?) eyes are still mostly blue. He's very skinny, but holy cow are his paws monstrous. If he makes it, he's going to be a BIG boy. I looked for Mama or siblings for 20 minutes but there were none to be found. As skinny as he is, I'm going to bet he hasn't seen Mama in a few days at least. He's super friendly but he is weak.

Sigh. How do they always find the suckers? I'm going to try to get some food into him, get his strength up a bit and then off to the vet for a Feluk/FIV test. If he clears those hurdles then..... something else will happen.

Fingers crossed for my "project kitten", and for me. My husband is going to kill me. I'm going to call him Bacon because, y'know, EVERYONE loves Bacon. How can Mr. RF be angry that I brought home Bacon?

Oh my, he is CUTE! Looks like a stray that lived around the place I used to live. He was a big cat with double paws, but ohhh so affectionate.

The last time I had something hiding on the front porch it was the "WTF is THAT?" dog. I had gotten a wild urge and just went and got a pup that needed a home. My DIL said that I was her idol

Waay cute name idea!! What a good story

I promise not to tell Mr. RF but I have a feeling that Bacon will announce himself.

Good for you but I don't envy you trying to keep Bacon away from the Great Dane or vice versa.

I do hope you find a home for him/her.

The last barn I boarded at before I bought my farm had a cute little grey tabby kitten running around one evening. She tried to climb up the polo wraps as I was putting them on my horse, crawled under the stall doors and chased us around the indoor when I went to ride. The BO thought she might have come from the farm next door so I plopped her into a bucket, took her over and they said no. On my way home that night I passed a small animal vet practice that was still open so I took her in, had her checked over and started shots. Fortunately they had a little bag of cat chow and I knew I had leftover kitty litter and pan from last house cat so I knew we were set for the short haul. She had 4 white paws so I was going to call her Boots but when she followed me into the shower the next morning (until she got wet) she immediately got called Shadow.

15 yr later she was buried under the pine tree out front along with a couple of other cats and dogs.

I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people...I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

Well, bacon announced himself all right, and Mr. RF does love him some Bacon. We're good.

Awww Sue, I love those stories. In 12 years I hope I'll have a similar one about the Hope cat, who scrambled up to me on election night of 08 and did her best "Are you my mother?" impression. I also have Steve from Accounting, who came to live with us when a coworker of Mr. RF's could no longer keep him, and then there is Girlygirlcatcat, who once belonged to my trainers daughter but needed a new home ASAP.

And of course there is Arlo, who is not allowed to meet Bacon, because Arlo doesn't even CHEW bacon, he just swallows it.

                      So the inn is FULL.

I am just hoping right now that the little guy will make it. He's so weak and skinny and obviously still pretty stressed out. We need to give him a flea bath tonight (joy of joys!), get him dry and I'm hoping he will start eating on his own; if not I'm going to have to intervene tomorrow with some kitten formula.

And just so you know- I went to pick Mr. RF up from work and needed to stop to get a dish tub and soap to wash the kitten; I told Mr. RF that I had a very exciting project, dragged him into the grocery store with me, made my purchases and then back into the car. On the way home he played 20 questions trying to figure out what my project was; it included such queries as "Did you steal a baby?" and "Are you washing my feet for me?" but NOT "Did you bring home a starving flea infested orphaned kitten?" I thought he knew me better than that.

Jingles for Bacon! I'll keep y'all updated.

I was TOTALLY ready to pinky swear.

I am sitting in McDonald's (on WiFi) and just let out a very embarassing, public, BIG intake of breath with the 'ooooohhhh.....'

It is a fortuitous day, it is the IttyBitty's one year Birthday.

Welcome Bacon. Stay out of Arlo's mouth, m'kay???

Oh my god, he is the CUTEST kitten!!!

While at the vet pick up some canned Science Diet A/D, it's been great at putting weight on kittens/puppies/raccoons/random stray animals that have found their way into my life.

My mother in law recently picked up a couple of stray's a mile from our house (a young short hair JR cross and a baby Catahoula mix) and even though their "Inn was Full", it turned out to be the perfect addition. Papaw (our grandfather) is 85 and just lost his dog of 13 years...I was with him at the vet when she was put down and he said "I have nothing left now", as his wife of 60 years had passed a few years ago. That Catahoula mix has not only wiggled herself into the huge hole left by his old dog, but she has done it with pazazz and pupply kisses!

I'm a firm believer that animals come into our life for a reason...I'm sure Bacon will let you know his soon enough!

                          Congrats on your addition!

Huge kudos to you for being so kind and picking up the little guy..
I just hope there aren't other kittens that you just couldn't see.

Don't feel bad, I could never in a million years have drove by and not done something.

Our Inn is always full too, but somehow we manage.

Sooo, I guess you are keeping him???

RF-it could be that getting rid of the fleas will greatly help Bacon. From watching Animal Cops it seems that kittens are really depleted by the fleas attacking. I think some kittens even had to have transfusions, but hopefully without the fleas he'll bounce right back. I guess it's true that kittens and cats pick their own people.

dawn dish detergent works just as well on cats as it does on dogs..........and jarred baby food meat has lured even my most finicky sick kittens to eat...well, all except one......i thought he was going to die, he got so sick from being wormed..but one manufacturer puts out a pre-kitten dry food...cannot recall the name, sounds like an egyptian god or something ..18.00 a bag..and the tiniest micro mini bites...
                                  but baby food is cheaper.........

good luck, kitty is gorgeous......i am glad you are a sucker for a lost babe..........
