Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • WANTED: Winter blankets, various sizes

Every winter we lose a few blankets to destruction, weather, critters, you name it. some are simply warn out and shot. this winter is the first time in years that we've had a "normal sized" weanling here, and our foal blanket was loaned out and never returned, so that is one particular need.

Do you have a leftover blanket that's too ratty to use in your barn, but would still keep a rescue horse warm this winter here? or perhaps one you bought that doesn't fit and oculd use a new home?

we acn use everything from pony/foal size up to full sized draft blankets; always need waterproof sheets in various sizes. We often end up layering special needs horses, so multiple medium weight blankets may well get put to work on a single horse...

the one thing we don't need are hoods, we have several and seldom use them.

Please contact us off list if you have something you may be willing to donate.
    Thanks so much,

      Kim,
We sure are. In particular, I have 3 TBs in my care this winter -- all 3 are OTTB (ex-racehorses), and all 3 do not handle cold weather well. One, a 23yo mare, is slightly overweight and already growing a great winter coat but history tells me she will still get chilled every time she gets wet, so even adys like today -- 58 degrees out but misting -- she is out in a rain sheet.

      Our primary needs are this:

      1) a rain sheet for a 5 month old filly;
      2) rain sheets for 2 full sized TBs -- approximately 80" (can cheat as small as 76" and 'swim' in as large as 84")
      3) extra layers of any weight including linings and slinkies -- or extra heavy winter layers for 2 full sized TBs, same size range.

Otherwise, we can always use other blankets. We have everything in our care from a 12hh POA and a 9 hand 5-mo old filly to a pair of drafts that are each more than 2200 lbs in mass who ideally won't need blanketing this winter but if our weather is quirky and crazy again, they could.

Thank you so much to anyone who has anything to share....tax receipt will gladly be emailed or mailed to all who ask.

Lol, I'd be happy to give you my blanket, but since I'm supposed to be selling it, that wouldn't go over too well.
Anywho, your stable is in my area. I know your new place is a hunter lesson barn (our barn has a couple ladies who used to ride at Crosswinds and were very upset when you moved away from them ) and I'm assuming also a boarding barn, like the other big barns in our area. No offense, but you should be able to buy your own blankets, even if you have to go with used, and leave the free blankets to people who get stuck with a single rescue horse, and can't afford to buy a proper blanket AND supplements/boarding fee the horse needs.
Plus, it rarely got under zero last winter, and it seems that it will be the same this winter. Our own BO keeps the horses in in really cold weather, and the barn stays at 32 degrees or higher, and the horses don't need more than a regular turnout blanket/sheet. Even our OTTBS with no winter coat of their own...

            Fawn,
No, they wouldnt be too heavy. one of the TBs grew no winter coat last year at all and has minimal coat so far this year. if they are heavier than we need for most dates, there will still be times when they ARE needed -- that same TB spent part of the winter in 4 layers of blanket plus a hood....

              Rascal,
Not sure if you've us confused with someone else, or simply a misunderstanding....we are not a 'hunter lesson barn' nor a boarding barn. We are a 501c3 nonprofit charity rescue. We do and have given lessons occasionally, but seldom have horses capable of lessons, so typically only do so with the owners horses. We are in Sidell IL (near Danville) and used to be in Tuscola IL, where we were often confused with a facility called Three Crosses, who were shut down by animal control and the state about 3 years ago. If you ARE close to us, we hope you'll come meet us and come see what we do when you have a chance. We like to meet as many as we can of the fellow horsepeople in the area!

You may not know, but as a 501c3 we are REQUIRED to function off donations from the general public. If we spend donated funds to buy blankets, those funds are not there for other key needs, like feeding 20 head of rescued horses, paying vet bills, shots, wormer, etc. Have we spent funds in the past for blankets? yes, as needed, and we will again in the future; however, by requesting folks who WISH to donate a blanket to do so, it helps us keep our budget more managable.

Our horses live outside 24/7, in as natural a setting as we can provide them. They do not have individual stalls, but rather stalls are rotated for meal times, vet care, etc. They DO have a lot of natural windbreaks and several lean tos, but they are outside all but about 15 minutes 2x per day. We blanket only as needed for health reasons. For those who have health issues, are underweight, have lived as show horses and not needed a winter coat for years, are older etc MAY need blankets this winter. I know the 3 OTTBs all will -- 1 is an older mare (23) who despite a great coat and great body weight gets terribly chilled in even a warm spring rain; 1 is underweight somewhat and a former show horse; the other is at an ideal weight but has minimal coat thus far.

So, if you do not wish to donate a blanket, we understand. However, for folks who feel what we do is important and that this is a way they could help without having to put out a cash outlay, we thank them and really appreciate the support.

              Sincerely,
              AnnMarie Cross

I have two size 78 winter stable blankets - one is a teal big d and the other is a thinsulate burgandy colored blanket.

Neither one is beautiful but both are in great condition with no holes or rips and quite clean. My dad was just bugging me tonight to get them out of his house and I have no use for them.

Please let me know if you could use them and where to send them ... I would love to see them go to good use.

Thanks very much, AMT! If you are ever in the midwest for any reason, we hope you'll come by to visit -- we LOVE having guests, and even sometimes have folks from other parts of the country come out and stay in a local hotel and visit with us for several days!

                  You can send it to:

If you'll please be sure to include a note with your mailing address so we can send you a tax receipt for the blankets. If you wish for us to reimburse your postage, please email me off list with the postage cost; if you can donate that as well that's a 2nd THANK YOU!!!
