OLYMPIC DREAMS–TRAIN IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GIANTS

FEATURED

Great Island Stables in Darien, Connecticut–home barn to the late Olympic gold medalist showjumper, William Steinkraus, is now available for lease. Set on a private island overlooking the Long Island Sound, the sprawling granite stable houses 18 stalls and is in the French Norman architectural style. Those familiar with Hamilton Farm, the longtime headquarters of the United States Equestrian Team in Gladstone, New Jersey, will immediately recognize the similar grand vaulted tile ceilings and abundance of brass interior accents.
Great Island Stables has an attached, heated indoor ring with modern footing and sliding doors for ventilation in good weather. Outside, there is a sand dressage ring and a turf jumping field which originally served as a half-size, practice polo field. Both enjoy breathtaking views of the nearby harbor and private marina. Eight paddocks are conveniently located adjacent to the stable. There are also several heated tack rooms as well as a small changing room and bathroom. A two-bedroom groom’s apartment upstairs is also available on a separate lease.
Great Island Stables sits on 63 entirely private acres and has worked equally well as both a Hunter/Jumper and a Dressage facility. The island road system is entirely private and leads to scenic, waterfront riding trails. Great Island Stables is an easy commute from Greenwich, Westport and New Canaan, and is convenient to both I-95, the Merritt Parkway, and Metro North. Regular train service from Darien to New York’s Grand Central Terminal runs an hour and fifteen minutes.
