Instructor/Senior Instructor of Equine Science and Equine Extension Specialist

The successful candidate will be responsible for the leadership and coordination of the State 4-H Horse Program. Responsibilities of this position include managing the curriculum, as well as overseeing program development and other activities related to the 4-H Horse Program. The latter includes oversight of District horse shows, Junior Horse Championship Show and the State 4-H Horse Show, judging and youth horse contests, volunteer and judges training, clinics, seminars and other educational activities. The State 4-H Horse Program includes approximately 7,500 4-H horse projects, several hundred volunteers and industry professionals, faculty, staff and county-based extension educators. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with industry professionals and colleagues in the Department of Animal Science and College on the development and delivery of youth, volunteer, and 4-H club leader programs. There is the expectation that the individual filling this position will be involved with Quality Animal Management programming, including best practices for nutrient management and water quality. The successful applicant will have some responsibilities in teaching introductory and advanced equine production and management classes and advising undergraduate students in the Department of Animal Science. In addition, there is an expectation that the successful candidate will engage in appropriate collaborative and interdisciplinary activities within and outside the department. There is the expectation that the candidate will interact with breed and other equine industry organizations as appropriate. A minimum of a Master’s Degree is required in Animal Science, Equine Science or a related field of study. At least 5-10 years of equine industry and extension experience is required. Applicants with a degree in a related field of study will be considered provided they have sufficient and appropriate equine science knowledge, equine handling skills, and industry expertise. The candidate must possess excellent teaching, program development, and management skills, and be proficient with event planning to oversee the statewide 4-H Horse Program. Expertise in data base management, curriculum development and implementation is desired. The successful candidate will demonstrate positive human relations and effective communication skills necessary to work effectively with youth, colleagues, industry representatives, government officials, and the general public. Previous experience with fund raising activities is important. Experience working with diverse audiences is desirable. Salary will be competitive, commensurate with background and experience.
