Faculty, Equine Studies
Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applicants for a full-time faculty position in the School of Equine Studies, reporting to the dean of the school, to start August 2019. The equestrian program at the College began in the 1950s and continues to be a recognized national leader in equine studies education and the disciplines of dressage, hunters, jumpers and, more recently, western seat riding. The beautiful 80-acre George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center is located in nearby Concord Township. The School of Equine Studies curriculum serves 65-85 full-time undergraduate students seeking a Bachelor of Science with majors in equine entrepreneurship, equine teacher trainer-English, equine facility management and equine therapeutic horsemanship. Equine Studies students from more than 40 states and foreign countries enroll at Lake Erie to invest in their passion for horses and set the foundations for their lifelong career in the equine industry.
The successful candidate will teach 24 credit hours each academic year, including classes in equine facilities management, equine business, equine horse care, equine anatomy and physiology, equine health, pasture management and related courses. Additional responsibilities include academic advising of students and the continual development of the curriculum to serve the changing needs of the students in equine studies. The faculty member will network within the College and equine industry to promote the equine studies program and build the local and national reputation of the School of Equine Studies at Lake Erie College. He/she will be required to attend on-campus recruiting events, summer orientation sessions and riding evaluations. He/she will be required to attend faculty meetings, workshops, and professional development programs and to accept additional duties as assigned by the dean. They will also serve on College-wide committees and work as a productive member of the campus faculty community.
Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching in a liberal arts college environment. To be considered for the faculty position, the candidate should hold an undergraduate degree in equine science, animal science, equine management or other bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution. A master’s degree in a related field or D.V.M. are desirable but not required. Faculty rank will be determined by academic background and professional experience. The candidate must have demonstrated teaching ability at the college level and be able to teach a variety of courses in a highly experiential equine studies curriculum. Experience and teaching ability in the riding disciplines of hunters, jumpers or dressage is preferred. Experience and expertise in equestrian facilities management and equestrian event management in their discipline is also preferred. Instructor certification by P.A.T.H., Intl. is desirable but not required.
