Coordinator of Equine Studies


Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position of coordinator of equine studies.


Recruiting, Alumni and Public Relations:
• In collaboration with the dean, acts as a representative of the equine program to our community and alumni.
• Serves as the primary liaison to Admission and Enrollment Management for the recruitment of students for the School of Equine Studies.
• Provides tours and hospitality for prospective students and families during all on-site riding evaluations.
• Works with dean and the Office of PR and Marketing to develop and maintain appropriate advertising and promotional materials, including digital display, print materials, magazine advertising and online presence.
• Represents the School of Equine Studies at all promotional events for prospective and incoming students.
• Works closely with Admission and PR & Marketing for phone and email responses and communications to inquiries regarding or promoting equine studies.
• Working with PR & Marketing, develops and maintains a frequently updated online presence via social media and free or paid web sites for promotion of the School of Equine Studies and student recruitment.
• Represents the School of Equine Studies at trade shows, such as Equine Affaire, and other promotional opportunities, such as horse shows, 4-H groups and high schools.
. Plans all aspects of participation at trade shows and events.
. Prepares and tracks budgets and expenses for all events and allocates to EQ, Admission and PR and Marketing respectively.
. Prepares all materials, sets up and takes down booth and organizes staffing of all activities at events.
. Tracks and compiles results of trade show and promotional activities.
. Follows up with booth visitors and tracks final college decision of student contacts.
• Prepares and posts the equine studies newsletter HOOFBEATS several times a year, in accordance with College graphic standards.
• Works with PR & Marketing on the presence of the School of Equine Studies on the LEC website.
• Reviews and manages equine studies representation and postings on the website, including equestrian team results, faculty highlights, student highlights, horse profiles, current and upcoming events, etc.
• Represents and promotes the School of Equine Studies at public events, alumni events and horse shows, serving as a liaison to the alumni community and equestrian community at large.

• Maintains a database of equine studies graduates by year of graduation, major, minor, concentration and riding team participation. Collaboratively conducts surveys and gathers data related to employment and activities in the equine industry. Analyzes data for trends and information for recruiting and promotional purposes.

Donations and Retirements:
• Manages all aspects of donations and retirement of horses and equipment donations to the School of Equine Studies.
. Serves as point person for initial contact and all follow-up for all horse donations.
. Sets up both on-site and off-site evaluations for all horses being considered for donation, working closely with the coordinator of horse care and director of riding.
. Manages all horse donation paperwork, including all tax requirement forms, donation forms, communications and appropriate thanks to donors of all horses and equipment.
. Reports to the dean weekly on the status of donations to the program.
. Prepares a summary report bi-annually on all horses and equipment donated to the program.
• Facilitates and manages acquisition of horses being used as “training babies” and prepares lease contracts.

Boarder Barn Manager:
• Acts as a positive role model and leadership model in the management of equestrian facilities.
• Manages all contracts for new and returning boarders.
• Evaluates every boarded horse at arrival and monthly with the student owner with attention to appropriate levels of care, exercise, turnout, grooming and body condition score.
• Maintains the boarder barn tack room, wash racks and common areas in clean professional status.
• Oversees the operational, maintenance status and repair condition of the boarder barn.
• Interacts responsibly and professionally with boarders in the management of disputes and rule infractions.
• Supervises and works with any student interns in management of the boarder barn.
• Oversees the daily events and activities of students and horses in the boarder barn.
• Meets regularly with the dean regarding boarder barn status, events and issues.
• Serves as cross-trained support and vacation relief personnel for the coordinator of horse care.
• Vacation time shall be taken as approved and when not needed for boarder barn activities or vacation relief for the coordinator of horse care. Vacation time should not conflict with any scheduled tours or promotional events for the school.
• Attends equine faculty/staff meetings as requested by the dean.
• Performs additional tasks as requested and deemed necessary by the dean.
• Opportunities for part time teaching opportunities in equine studies for additional compensation may be available.


• Must have excellent writing skills and strong skills in Microsoft Excel.
• Must be enterprising and resourceful and able to work independently.
• Experience in therapeutic horsemanship and PATH, Intl. Certified Instructor status is highly desired.

• Experience in the HJ or dressage disciplines and intercollegiate equestrian competition experience is highly desired.
• Must have the ability to lift 65 pounds (hay and grain) and handle a variety of horses safely to perform boarder barn manager responsibilities.
