Kieffer Captures Red Hills CIC***

March 8—Tallahassee, Fla.

You might not have bet on Czechmate to win the CIC*** at Red Hills this weekend based on the entry list, but the 9-year-old Czech Warmblood stepped up to the plate for Lauren Kieffer and came home with the win in his first CIC*** after jumping a double clear round over Fuzzy Mayo’s show jumping track.

“He’s just always been a really competitive horse, but it’s certainly nice when five years later he’s still doing it,” said Kieffer, who’s brought “Czechy” along since he was 4 for owners Courtney and Kylie Ramsay.

In the CIC**, Marilyn Little withdrew RF Tabasco overnight due to a lost shoe on cross-country. They were sitting in second place.

In the CIC*, Jennie Brannigan withdrew Cool As Ice, who was in seventh place.

March 6—Tallahassee, Fla.

In her first ever appearance at the Red Hills International Horse Trials, Liz Halliday-Sharp made quite the impression as she captured the CIC*** lead with Fernhill By Night (41.4) and slotted into third with HHS Cooley (43.4) after dressage.

“I was really pleased with both horses,” she said. “I think they tried really hard today. It was really, really cold when I did my test on ‘Blackie’ [Fernhill By Night] and he was feeling a little bit of that.”

One To Watch: Rodeos Or Running Cross-Country, Elana Von Doeler’s Up For Any Challenge

Most days, you’d be just as likely to find Elana Von Doeler jumping huge fences on cross-country as you would watching her don a cowboy hat and race around barrels at a rodeo, and she relishes the challenge.

The 22-year-old Canadian rider splits her time between eventing at the two-star level on High Star 3E and competing on the Women’s Professional Rodeo Circuit with Mercedes.

This weekend, she’ll be putting on her cross-country vest and tall boots to compete at the Red Hills International Horse Trials (Fla.) in the CIC**.
