Arguably the most famous female jockey of all time, she’s had a voracious appetite for victory, and for even greater challenges out of the saddle, since the day she was born.

It’s been almost 25 years, but Donna Barton Brothers still vividly remembers watching her first Kentucky Derby in person. The emotional experience hasn’t been diminished by the years, and she can’t discuss that day, that race, that horse, without her eyes welling up.

Jonathan Wentz, the highest-placed U.S. rider at this year’s Paralympics in London, passed away on Sept. 30. He was 21.

Still have Olympic fever? Not to worry, the 2012 London Paralympics kick off today, Aug. 29, with the Opening Ceremonies. Para-dressage starts Aug. 30 with the Grade II and Grade Ib team tests, and the competition runs through Sept. 4. You can find a full schedule of the events on the London 2012 website.

The U.S. endurance team made a strong showing at the Longines FEI World Endurance Championship, held Aug. 25 at Euston Park in Newmarket, Suffolk, England. The team finished in fourth place with a combined time of 24:45:00.

Valerie Kanavy was the first to finish of the U.S. squad. She and Reach For The Gold placed 20th with a time of 8:00:06. Jeremy Reynolds and A Kutt Above finished in 21st place with a time of 08:00:09, while Heather Reynolds and Riverwatch finished in 36th place on 08:44:45. John Crandell III’s Heraldic did not pass the mandatory re-check at vet check 5.

The following drivers have been named by the U.S. Equestrian Federation to represent the United States in the 2012 FEI Singles Driving World Championships, held in Lezirias, Portugal, Sept. 12-16.
