Zenyatta Makes History With 16 Wins

This past Friday, April 9, the racehorse filly phenom Zenyatta added a 16th consecutive win to her streak in the $500,000 Apple Blossom Invitational Handicap at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.

Zenyatta romped to victory over four rivals under a hand ride by Mike Smith. As usual, the dark bay mare stayed at the rear of the pack before overtaking the competitors in the final turn with casual ease.

Zenyatta joined the ranks of 1948 Triple Crown winner Citation, two-time Horse of the Year Cigar, and Mister Frisky as the only Thoroughbreds to score 16 consecutive wins in races not restricted to state-breds.

Her career earnings currently total $5,924,580 after winning her 10th grade I victory.  Other important wins include the Breeders’ Cup Classic (Calif.) in 2009 and the Santa Margarita Handicap (Calif.) in March.

Zenyetta’s team is unsure what her next race will be. Trainer John Shirreffs plans to aim the mare towards the Breeders’ Cup and welcomes a meeting with the other superstar mare and Horse of the Year, Rachel Alexandra.
