The air is getting crisper and the days shorter, beckoning the start of fall, and with it the beginning of the indoor show season. As always, the Capital Challenge Horse Show kicks the fun off with 11 days of equitation, hunters and jumpers in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

The BigEq.com Equitation Showcase is the opening act, beginning today, Sept. 26, with the EMO Insurance Agency/USHJA Jumping Seat Medal Final—East and the North American Adult Amateur Equitation Championships. On the hunter and jumper side of things, the show features the World Championship Hunter Rider challenge classes and North American League East Coast Finals.

The biggest classes for the professionals include the WCHR Professional and Developing Pro Challenges on Wednesday. Friday will feature the WCHR Pro Final, challenging the riders’ ability to ride unfamiliar horses. The format has changed this year, and only four riders will compete in the final: the top three riders in the national standings plus the winner of the Professional Challenge on Wednesday (if Wednesday’s winner is one of the top three nationally, the next highest rider on the national list will be invited to participate). Those riders will take turns riding four borrowed horses, and the rider with the highest combined score will be crowed the winner.
