- It was another golden day for Jhesika Wells and Intrepid, as they won the young rider individual dressage competition during the second day, Thursday, July 29, of the 2010 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. The duo scored a 70.00 percent taking both team and individual gold back to Region 5/6.
- This was the first trip to NAJYRC and the Kentucky Horse Park for Wells, from Redmond, Wash. “It feels great to come from somewhere less known and represent the area and do well,” she said. “My ride was just the best, and he worked so hard for me today.”
- Intrepid is the first FEI mount for Wells, who made the leap to Prix St. Georges this year. “It was quite a big leap from second level to Prix St. Georges,” she said. “He is a once in a lifetime kind of horse.”
- It was double silver for Canadian Megan Lane riding Caravella, (68.94%), a member of the second-placed Canada-Ontario team yesterday. Lane, 19, Collingwood, Ont., concentrated on the moments in between the movements in the test to stay focused and collected. “I aimed for a 75 percent,” she said. “During the test I just think about what I have to work on and what I have practiced.”
- Jaimie Holland, 21, Caledon, Ont., and Fleurina had one of the loudest cheering sections of the dressage competition and took home individual bronze, as well as the Canada-Ontario team silver. “When you go around the ring it’s a lot of nerves that you have to battle down,” she said. “I was just thinking about the good feeling I had in warm-up and not to lose it.”
- Holland prepared for her rides by writing detailed notes on each part of her test and reviewing every moment before entering the arena.
- Megan Davis and Bentley placed fourth with a 67.63 percent. This was the last young rider championship for the 21-year-old Davis, who has been to NAJYRC five times.
- Jillian Kermenosh from Haddonfield, N.J., and Nelzon scored a 67.52 to come in fifth individually.
- Nerves seemed to play a larger role in the individual competition as many riders were faulted for course errors.
- Three individual riders competed on stallions during this year’s NAJYRC dressage competition.
- Eventing started today with the dressage competition for the CH-Y **. The combined team from Area V & IX took the lead with 158.7 total penalties. Area III followed behind in second with 163.0 penalties. Team Canada was third with 166.3 penalties.
- Anisa Tracy and the chestnut gelding Tigger VIII, lead the CH-Y** after dressage on a 45.4. Tracy, 20, from Parker, Colo., gambled and didn’t ride before warming up for her dressage test. “I knew it would either work to my advantage or not,” she said. “But it was good. I didn’t expect him to be as relaxed as he was.”
- Kelly Pugh, 20, from Tres Pinos, Calif., and Copycat Chloe are tied for second place with Devon Brown, 18, Alpharetta, Ga., and Dynamic Image, on 51.9.
- Karen Shull, 21, College Station, Texas, and Fernhill Figaro sit in fourth (52.4). Shull is looking ahead to Saturday’s cross-country phase, “I thought the course looked amazing,” she said. “There are enough hard questions on the course, but it’s fair.”
- Team Canada-Alberta—Kaylynn Malmberg on Pickin Around, Sage Sapergia on Shiners Q Chex, Chloe Beveridge on Tucker Genuine Jewel and Nancy Pratch on Rooster Kicker—won the team gold medal in the reining competition.
Tomorrow, Friday, July 29, the junior riders will compete for individual medals in dressage, the CH-Y* dressage will take place, and teams will battle it out for the medals in the junior and young rider show jumping.
