Watch Why They Won: Final Round Lifts Augusta Iwasaki To Maclay Championship

In Sunday’s ASPCA Maclay Championship, Augusta Iwasaki was in 18th place among the 221 riders who contested the first round—impressive overall, but not an apparent threat to win the whole event. Then she climbed.

Iwasaki improved her placing by one spot in the flat phase, and then the 18-year-old from Calabasas, California, impressed the judges so much in her second over fences round that she moved into fourth place, earning a spot in the final five to contest the championship. In that last test—which included a hand gallop fence, a transition to walk, a turn-on-the-haunches and a counter-canter fence—she wowed judges Michael Tokaruk and Robin Rost Brown and won the 2022 Maclay championship.
