Sandra Auffarth is a German eventing champion, on her way to Paris represent her country in her fourth Olympics already having earned medals of every color. But on Sunday at the CHIO Falsterbo (Sweden) the rider added something else to her resume: a five-star show jumping win against an international field of riders, many also headed to Paris on other horses, who specialize in the discipline.
Auffarth rode Quirici H to the top of an 11-horse jump-off in the Agria Falsterbo Grand Prix CSI5* over tracks built by Santiago Varela and Elena Boix of Spain and Fredrik Malm and Frida Andersson of Sweden. Of the 42 first-round starters, the best 11 pairs advanced to the jump-off, but among them only four had jumped clear: Auffarth, Pius Schwizer (Switzerland), Kristaps Neretnieks (Latvia) and Cian O’Connor (Ireland).
In an exciting jump-off, both time and obstacle errors were decisive as, one by one, the big favorites fell away. At the end, only two horses—Auffarth’s 13-year-old Hanoverian (FRH Quaid—Evita, Escudo 19) she co-owns with Evelyn and Michael Viehof, and Irishman Cian O’Connor’s Fancy De Kergane—were still faultless, but it was Auffarth who was the fastest, stopping the clock in 52.56 seconds versus O’Connor’s 53.62.

Auffarth said afterward that she had not even thought about winning, but her horse exceeded her expectations.

“I thought it would be a round to get routine at this height, and then he jumped super and was super concentrated,” she said. “It was quite a tough track, quite technical. I had no idea, I must honestly say, of how fast the other riders had been riding.”
