Daniel Coyle’s partner Incredible lived up to his name Saturday at Spruce Meadows, where he and Coyle topped the $732,614 ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup CSI5*.

The crowd knew it was in for an exciting day of competition when, from the 27 contenders over course designer Santiago Varela’s first-round track, the top 12 to return for the second round included some of the week’s previous winners, all gunning for a two-round score that would let them finish on top or force a jump-off.

In the second round, Coyle, representing Ireland; Kyle King (USA); Coyle’s brother, Jordan Coyle, who won the AKITA Drilling Cup earlier in the day; and Abdulrahman Alrajhi (Saudi Arabia) all finished on zero combined faults to create a four horse jump-off.

Jordan held the lead briefly with a clear jump off time of 35.86 seconds on Chaccolino, but younger brother Daniel aboard the incredible Incredible, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood (Clinton—Unbelievable, Heartbreaker) who he co-owns with Ariel Grange, crossed the finish line clear in a time of 35.21 seconds. King, who won the Friday evening competition, came close to topping Daniel’s time but finished second on Kayenne Z with a clear round time of 35.29 seconds. A rail in the jump-off kept Alrajhi and Ventago off the podium.

“I wasn’t sure how today would go, to be honest,” Daniel said. “He was second last week, which probably gave me a wee bit more spur on to try and get it over the line. Today there’s already two rounds before you try and win the class, so a challenging course.”
