USHJA Announces Peter Wetherill Cup

Longtime equestrian Peter Wetherill’s legacy will continue through the Peter Wetherill Cup, a new honor that will recognize the owner of the World Champion Hunter Rider program’s Hunter of the Year.

The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association and the USHJA Foundation will award the Peter Wetherill Cup each year to the owner of the horse that bests displays the ideal hunter qualities.

Longtime equestrian Peter Wetherill’s legacy will continue through the Peter Wetherill Cup, a new honor that will recognize the owner of the World Champion Hunter Rider program’s Hunter of the Year.

The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association and the USHJA Foundation will award the Peter Wetherill Cup each year to the owner of the horse that bests displays the ideal hunter qualities. 

“It is a privilege to create this accolade in honor of Peter Wetherill,” said Geoff Teall, chairman of the WCHR committee. “Peter was an exceptional rider, owner and person, and his name will live on through this award of distinction.”

Wetherill died in February of 2010. He accrued victories aboard horses such as Junior League, Hudson and Desert Storm. He also owned Laura Kraut’s horse Cedric, who was part of the U.S. show jumping team that won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games. Cedric and Kraut also represented the United States at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

WCHR program members may submit nominations via online ballot starting Nov. 7, 2011. The ballot will be sent out by email, and nominations must be in by the deadline on Dec. 1, 2011. The Peter Wetherill Cup will be presented on Feb. 18, 2012, at the WCHR Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular in Wellington, Fla.
