The U.S. Hunter Jumper Association has announced this year’s recipients of the $25,000 Hamel Scholarship for Further Education: Erykah Glass, Brianna Hunt, and Kelly Tehan. 

Erykah Glass, 18, of Johns Creek, Georgia has ridden since age 6 and recently graduated from Johns Creek High School. She will attend Delaware State University  this fall as a freshman studying business marketing with a concentration in data analytics. Glass’ work at a local barn, which enabled her to pursue her equestrian passion, inspired her interest in business marketing.

Brianna Hunt, 32, of Sacramento, California, initially pursued an undergraduate degree in animal sciences before changing majors due to personal health complications. Having ridden all her life, Hunt’s passion for horses is intertwined with her interest in improving their lives through medical research. With the scholarship, she’ll return to Penn Foster College (Arizona) in the veterinary technician program and will enter an animal science postgraduate program afterward.

Kelly Tehan, 35, of Arlington, Virginia, plans to earn an MBA from George Mason University (Virginia) using the scholarship. After life circumstances briefly paused her educational and athletic pursuits, Tehan looks forward to continuing her professional and equestrian education at GMU and with her trainers at Highgarden Farm in Frederick, Maryland. 

The Hamel Family Scholarship for Further Education is funded by the Kristen and James Hamel Family Foundation.The USHJA awards up to $25,000 each year to one or more USHJA members to use for college, graduate, trade or professional school. Applications for the 2023 scholarship will open in January 2023. Candidates may apply for the scholarship every year but may only be awarded the scholarship once. More information at ushja.org.
