USEF And EQUUS Foundation Announce Humanitarian Award

Oct 15, 2009 - 10:00 PM

The U.S. Equestrian Federation and The EQUUS Foundation have joined together to offer an industry-wide award, which will be presented for the first time during the USEF Pegasus Awards Dinner at the USEF’s annual meeting in January 2010.

The EQUUS Foundation Humanitarian Award, presented by the USEF, is a recognition of the humanitarian achievements made by a member of the equestrian world. The goal of the award is to spotlight the selfless dedication one individual or a group of individuals has made, whether on a regional or national scale. From improving the health and welfare of the horse to promoting and expanding the general public’s appreciation and respect of the diverse role of the horse, the recipient of the award will be someone who has devoted considerable personal time to make the lives and quality of life of our equine partners paramount.

Corporations, organizations, affiliate groups and businesses are ineligible for the EQUUS Foundation Humanitarian award, which is limited to individuals. Case-by-case exceptions might be made. A group or organization may nominate an individual, however.

Any member of the equestrian community may make a nomination; nominations must be received by the USEF by Nov. 9. Nominations can be submitted by U.S. mail, overnight carrier, and via the USEF website at
Nominations must include the following:

    •    a nomination form, which can be found on
    •    an explanatory written statement about why the nominated individual is worthy of the award
    •    biographical information about the nominee
    •    specific examples of the nominee’s philanthropic work
   •    supportive statements such as written testimonials or letters from those affected by the nominee’s contributions

The EQUUS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity aiming to raise public awareness of the value of horses in society through education and the award of grants to charities that use the horse to benefit the public, promote horse welfare and elevate equestrian sport. The EQUUS Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 million in grants since its first awards in 2003.
