University Of Connecticut Quarantines Due To EHV-1

Officials from the University of Connecticut, in Storrs, Conn., have quarantined all 72 horses in their equine program after positive tests for the equine herpes virus, or EHV-1, were confirmed.

The UConn stables are employing strict sanitization practices. All coursework involving horses, polo practice and other activities are suspended. A sale run by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, scheduled for Jan. 20, has been postponed.

Veterinarians plan to maintain the quarantine for three weeks after the last confirmed case of EHV-1 and hope to lift the restrictions in early March.
