The Equine Disease Communication Center confirmed on March 9 that there are two unrelated cases of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy in Maryland.

A 3-year-old Thoroughbred stabled at Laurel Park Racetrack in Anne Arundel County developed symptoms on March 6 and was admitted to the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, Virginia, where it was put in isolation. The horse is responding to treatment.

Four barns at Laurel Racetrack are on a hold order, prohibiting horses from entering or exiting the property. No other horses have displayed symptoms.

A second, unrelated case of EHM was reported at a private barn in Cecil County on March 5. The horse did not respond to treatment and was euthanized March 6. That barn has also been placed on quarantine.
