Although Matine, shown by Andreas Helgstrand, only won silver at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany, in the Grand Prix freestyle, the YouTube video of her flew around the world and introduced more than 10 million viewers to the joy of dressage.

Matine was officially retired to be a broodmare in 2009. She’d injured a tendon at the 2007 FEI World Cup Final in Las Vegas, Nev., and never returned to complete soundness.
