The Dressage Foundation has announced two recipients of its $25,000 Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize. The 2022 recipients are Emily Miles of Paola, Kansas, with Daily Show, and Jennifer Williams of Olympia, Washington, with Joppe K. These riders were selected because they display the characteristics and qualities of being talented, committed, qualified riders with plans to reach and excel at the international levels of dressage.

Miles and Daily Show, an 8-year-old Hanoverian stallion owned by Leslie Waterman, plan to train with Debbie McDonald. Miles’ goal for 2023 is to move to Intermediaire II and compete in the medium tour in the CDIs. Miles is planning stops in Tryon, North Carolina, and Ocala and Wellington, Florida, next show season with her grant funding. She and Daily Show won the national championship in developing Prix St. Georges when Daily Show was 7 years old, and they were reserve champions in the small tour at the 2022 U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions (Illinois).

“It is truly an honor to be chosen for TDF’s Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize with Daily Show!” said Miles. “I will use this generous grant to venture into the competition hotspot of Wellington in March. I have big dreams and really cannot thank TDF enough. As Carol Lavell said, it will help ‘smooth some bumps’ along the road. We will do our best to make this grant extremely beneficial, useful, and effective!”

Williams and Joppe K, an 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Joppe Partnerships LLC, will use the grant funding to spend the winter season in Wellington to train with Oded Shimoni and Charlotte Bredahl. In 2021, Williams showed Joppe in two CDIs in Europe, including at Aachen (Germany). In 2022, Williams and Joppe competed in the small tour including a win in the Lovsta Future Challenge qualifier. More recently, Williams debuted Joppe in the Grand Prix with a score of 73%.

Williams said, “I’m grateful to TDF for the opportunities that are offered to riders like myself who are working to get to the next level in our training and competition goals. I’ve always known Joppe was incredibly special, and this grant supports us as we pursue those goals.”

The Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize Fund was established in 2009 in special remembrance of Lavell’s mother, May Cadwgan, and in honor of her father, Gordon Cadwgan. At that time, Lavell shared, “The road to the top is very difficult: some ways are bumpier than others, some are more crooked, and some are dead ends.  My Olympic dream came true only because my road was paved with many generous supporters who gave not only dollars, but also tack, equipment, and even discounted transportation.  I hope this Prize will smooth the bumps for those deserving riders and horses on the road to their dreams.”

Since 2009, the Carol Lavell Advanced Dressage Prize Fund has awarded 21 grants totaling $525,000 in support of U.S. high performance teams.
