Lexington, Ky.—Aug. 8
Bellevue, Washington, is a long way from Lexington, Kentucky, but Lillian Thomas made the trip to USEF Pony Finals count when she rode Sun’s Up to the top of the small pony division for Maureen Mooney.
“It’s really fun and exciting,” said Thomas, 13, of winning her first Pony Finals title.
Thomas and the 10-year-old Welsh Pony (Laithehill Oberon—Moelgarneed Rhiannon) came into the over fences round in fifth.
“We went over our plan a few times so that hopefully in the moment we could remember,” said Thomas’ trainer and mother, Nora Thomas.
That paid off when Lillian and “Milo” laid down a beautiful round with scores that soared up to 90 to earn the third place over fences round, boosting them to the overall title.
“He was quiet in the schooling ring and he had really good energy in the ring,” Lillian said. “He’s pretty quiet so he takes a lot of leg.

“He’s so sweet,” she added, “but he doesn’t let you give him kisses.”

Lillian and Milo paired up a year ago. They started their season at the Desert Horse Park (California) then spent time at HITS Del Mar (California) and Blenheim (California) before coming to Kentucky. Nora sent six ponies to Kentucky; half of them, including Milo, vanned, and the other half took a plane ride.
Milo is ridden by Mooney’s daughter Cali Kingston in the short stirrup division when he’s not showing with Lillian in the small pony division. Nora said that’s easy for Milo because of his attitude.
“He’s so kind,” she said. “He’s got a very kind heart.”
