Many western states are working on new legislature regarding horse slaughter reported TheHorse.com.

State legislators in South Dakota have passed a resolution asking Congress to reinstate and fully fund the USDA’s inspection program for horse slaughter plants and processing facilities.

The resolution also instructs South Dakota Congressmen to vote against HR503/SB 727, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, which would prohibit the transport of horses to processing plants in Mexico and Canada. Previously, the South Dakota House of Representatives passed HCR 1003, instructing the state’s Congressional representatives to oppose the federal bills.

Legislators in Idaho and Oklahoma are working on resolutions to oppose as well. Wyoming just enacted legislation that would allow for horse slaughter in the future.

However, the national bill still has support. California lawmakers are currently considering SJR 22, a resolution urging Congress to pass the HR503/SB727.

Colorado lawmakers are also working on a bill that would allow taxpayers to choose to use their tax dollars to support the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance.
