The Sanctuary Equine Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation Center recently hosted a successful VetImaging Equine Ultrasound Wet Lab Clinic for veterinarians. The labs focused on effective ultrasound techniques on the abdomen/thoracic and the stifle and helped fulfill The Sanctuary’s vision of providing equine health care professionals with up-to-date educational resources.

“The VetImaging ultrasound wet labs are a great way for veterinarians to have hands-on instruction and study advanced ultrasound diagnostic techniques,” said Brenda McDuffee, General Manager of The Sanctuary. “VetImaging ultrasound courses are taught all across the country and The Sanctuary is pleased to offer them at our beautiful Ocala facility.”

On Saturday, May 19th, Dr. Carolyn Clark and Dr. Tracey Norman taught a course on abdomen/thoracic ultrasound. Dr. Clark has developed practical tips and techniques to understanding and imaging the thorax and abdomen from her vast experience in private practice. Her course is a combination of looking at normals vs. non-normals in a lecture/image format with an introduction into imaging the heart.

Dr. Tim Lynch and Dr. Susan Oakley taught the Sunday course, bringing their experience in imaging performance horses with stifle problems to The Sanctuary. “The stifle is a complex functional joint of the hind limb and it can be effectively imaged and treated with diagnostic ultrasound techniques,” McDuffee said. “Everyone who attended the course left with increased knowledge and they learned practical skills required to effectively diagnosis and treat the stifle joint.”

McDuffee added, “In addition to being a state-of-the-art rehab and conditioning center, The Sanctuary is always thrilled to host events which further the education of veterinarians, horse owners, trainers and riders. Our goal is complete care of all equines.”
