Peters Takes Early Lead In Aachen Grand Prix

Teammate George Williams is sitting in fifth place after scoring a 69.33 percent on Rocher, in his first major international competition since bringing the mare back from a yearlong layoff.

Half the riders in the Grand Prix class went today and the other half will ride tomorrow. Guenter Seidel on Aragon and Leslie Morse on Kingston are scheduled to ride for the United States tomorrow.

Anky van Grunsven of the Netherlands won the Prix St. Georges on IPS Painted Black, a Dutch Warmblood stallion, with a 72.75 percent. No U.S. riders competed in the small tour class.

In show jumping action, Michael Whitaker of Great Britain won the Landrat Hermann-Josef Pütz Memorial show jumping class today at Aachen on the Zangersheide gelding, El Capricho Atormentado Z (0-0/40.78), over Brazil\’s Rodrigo Pessoa on a mare, Queen Z (0-0/41.31). The best-placed U.S. rider was McLain Ward on Goldika. He finished 11th after collecting 8 faults in the jump-off. Kimberly Prince was 36th of 47 starters on the Hanoverian gelding, Couletto K James (0/78.76).

Pessoa had to accept second again (0-0/37.91) in the Warsteiner Grand Prix, but this time beaten by countryman Bernardo Alves on Canturo (0-0/36.78). Pessoa rode the great Baloubet du Rouet to relegate Nick Skelton of Great Britain to third on Arko III (0-0/38.62).

Jeffery Welles finished 29th of 60 starters on Armani as the highest-placed American rider (4/94.88). Beezie Madden and Authentic were 33rd (8/91.43), McLain Ward and Sapphire were 35th, and Laura Kraut and Miss Independent were 39th. Frey finished 51st on Marlou after collecting 12 faults in the first round.
